Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

About as upset as Cassandra fans would be if she was turned into a Sophitia CaS.

I don't know if you just haven't played as either character, but both have always been grapplers of different kinds. Astaroth's command grabs are for catching standing and crouching opponents, while Rock's work as combo extenders on grounded opponents. This has been the case since SC1, and it hasn't changed at all with the improvements to Astaroth in SC6.

I've spoken about this topic extensively twice already in this thread, and I seriously don't understand why people insist on showcasing their ignorance with statements as laughable as "Astaroth and Rock play the same" or "Astaroth has never been real a grappler." The latter is particularly confusing to me. Like, if you're not playing Astaroth as a grappler then wtf are you doing lmao. Have you seriously never played as either character? Or do you just mash the whole time and don't know about their mechanics?

None of this is to be condescending or anything, it just genuinely fucking astounds me how hypocritical Mina fans can be when they give Rock the same treatment their character got for so long. We're not particularly hopeful for him since we know he's never been super popular or anything, but just because we don't whine about him every other day like Talim or Mina fans did about their waifus for six years doesn't mean we wouldn't be stoked about his return.

I swear the only time this discussion comes up is when a particular group of people, usually those who already have one or more of their mains back, start passive-aggressively shitting on Rock or Lizardman or whatever going "WHO EVEN LIKES THOSE CHARACTERS? NO ONE LMAO!" It's one thing to have your taste in characters, we all do. But it's another to shit on those whose taste differs from yours. I could easily make the exact same claims of Mina or Talim or Amy or Cassandra being "uncharismatic" anime girl #24 with no defining personality, but I won't because I recognize they each fill a particular design niche, just as Rock plays the noble savage to Astaroth's evil brute.

I don't understand why it has to be a zero-sum game. Can't we like both Rock and Cassandra? I know I do.
It mainly boils down to the fact that we know there are more popular, iconic and unique characters getting cut, which makes it very hard to justify putting Rock in the game. If he makes it, but Cassandra, Tira etc. don't, you better believe fingers will be pointed at him.

The story mode even shows precedent that you should like both. kappa

I agree let's just give Rock a short skirt and ass attacks with a bubbly personality. Perhaps if they made Rock a cross-dresser or just extremely effeminate at least he would have something unique about his character.

In all seriousness I have no problem if Rock ends up being in the game as long as they make him interesting. There is nothing worse than a boring character.

I dunno, there's still a lot of uncertainty in the last video from @Hayate. I was expecting some big reason for why Tira would be pre-order DLC, and I'm not really feeling that. So she's going to be revealed later, that could just mean that she's being held for a last minute surprise for people who aren't following the pulse of this game as closely as we are. And it's not difficult at all to put her on the line below Sophitia, I don't think. I also think a bit too much stock is being put into the alphabetical order being "correct", since there are instances where this isn't the case. It would be a valid point only if it was universally true.

I do like the possibility of Raphael being included, and before we got the "stress sweat" comments, I did have him below Yoshimitsu, but putting Voldo there also made a lot of sense. However, I'm not really feeling Voldo on the line underneath Sophitia, because it implies they have an interaction, and they really... haven't. Oswald/Azwel/Papi/Vader going below Grøh makes sense, but I don't know how I feel about his name being there from the start, if he is indeed the final boss as Vergeben has suggested. I like the idea of him having a story, but if it were unlocked after finishing all of the main story, it would be better.

I personally believe that they will be adding more lines to the story timeline. I feel like Seong Mi-na wasn't going to be a thing, until they realized the demand for Koreans was high, so they went out of their way to include her, but this decision was made after they had already made the story mode screenshots with blurred names, so I don't feel like she is one of the blurred names, but she will get a story. If we're so accepting of the character roster screen not being final, I think we should be more open to the idea that the story timeline screen isn't final either. The E3 trailer didn't have the blurred lines in it at all, to show an example of different phases of that screen.

Going on to the character selection screen, this also loses me by putting Raphael on the Soul Edge side of the screen. In that the Raphael of this time is not tainted by Soul Edge nor even really motivated by it, it would make more sense if he was more of a median character, and with his intentions being pure, at least for now, he would be on the left side. The far right spot really should go to Cervantes, to be parallel vertically to Ivy, and really, he is the most far right Soul Edge type. Other right siders would be Lizardman for sure, and also Tira. Seong Mi-na would be a maybe, because she is searching for Soul Edge, so if Rock is really in over Tira, he would go on the left, bumping Seong Mi-na over to the right, but she still seems really out of place just like she would be in the story screen. Consistency breaks down here, more than anything else.

Rock having the lowest chance but being able to oust Tira from the cast just seems a bit contradictory. I understand that leaving out Rock means he is the only character, aside from Edge Master, who would not be returning from the original SoulCalibur, but I am of the opinion that Astaroth and Rock are just being merged into one, and they could either occupy the same slot, or Rock could be a bonus character using his own weapon, maybe having his own intro/outro and Critical Edge, but otherwise using the same moves.

Long story short, I'm not convinced that Tira will be pre-order DLC or not have a story, even if she is pre-order DLC, since I think that story timelines can and will be added, even for the real DLC characters to come in the future. A lofty expectation, perhaps, but Okubo seems to be putting out all the stops to make everyone happy, so I don't think we'll have any slouch.

This has been the case since SC1, and it hasn't changed at all with the improvements to Astaroth in SC6.

The thing about this is, going by what the new trailer focused on, they're leaning a lot more towards the combo-into-throws play style with Astaroth this time. Obviously we won't know for sure until we get some proper gameplay but the trailer showed him using throws as combo extenders which was Rock's one differing thing before. This isn't SCIV.

A big focus from what we've seen so far is making sure each character has their own unique thing and, now that his playstyle's likely mixed into Asta's properly and no longer unique, he doesn't add enough character-wise to feel worthwhile. We've already got a big muscled brute, we've already got 2 confident warriors counting Geralt (probably 3 assuming we get Hwang or Yun), does a confident warrior brute really add anything?

It's not as simple as liking everyone because the roster looks pretty limited, we're not going to get Tira and Raph and Lizardman and Cassandra and Setsuka and Hwang and Yun and Hilde and Rock all in the game. We can't have everyone so does it really surprise you that, of the remaining ones, a lot of us wouldn't like a second big brute grappler taking a spot?

Rock does need some changes to his moveset in order to be likable to a larger audience. He has changed weapons before and i think it is easier for us to accept the possibility because of that. If you like Rock as is, cool but there is no denying many people dont and i dont blame them not wanting him in if they think someone else may not make the roster.

Predicting Tira will be revealed at Tokyo Game Show somewhere between 19-23rd of September. Shining Decopon working for soul just makes it extremely unlikely that she will not be in the base game. I imagine there are other characters they could make the pre-order character instead assuming that they even bother. They could just as easily release create-a-soul equipment instead.

I'd be sad if Tira didn't have a story. She has one of the more fascinating backstories to me and there's a lot they could do with her behind-the-scenes in the SC I/SC II era.
In the Original Timeline, during the events of Soulcalibur I, Tira was adopted by a "normal" family as the Birds of Passage members were killed off when the evil seed was released. So... Tira wouldn't really have much of a story to tell. After her time with the "normal" family she went on a blind rage of killing people... But that's it. Then Soulcalibur III when her story starts properly.

So, if she's in, she'll probably be a servant of Soul Edge straight away. They could of course make the Birds of Passage continue during the SCI timeline, and Tira still be a member instead of all the members being killed and Tira being adopted. Anything is possible.

This is still speculation, maybe we will have big surprise until October, I just hope this will be good surprise and not bad ones like full mimic in SCV haha

I personnaly like that roster, espcially of we get more SC3-4 characters in DLC season 1 & 2

Maybe Rock is sacrified ? Maybe Papa gr0h is a boss in Center slot ? Maybe all characters have story line ?

The other thing that I didn't have time to mention in my video, is that I heard from a reliable source that the game was ready to launch for June with 20characters, and they decided to delay it to October to add characters and polish the game.

Just to let you know, Oswald would be spelled differently in katakana over Ozuru. And likewise, Azwel doesn’t even resemble Ozuru in katakana. Japanese have separate characters for both A and O sounds even in katakana.

I’m not quite sure where these names are coming from and I don’t know what everyone thinks Ozuru or Odr would be some final boss. Groh’s biography mentions him as an instructor and his profile gives him the formal character for Master (shishou). Curtis likewise has a suffix on his name underscoring formality. But rather than Mister Curtis, I would assume this would be Sir Curtis.

Also I didn't have the time to add this : I prefered a name with a first letter being a O to match better the Alphabetical Order with Gr0h.

Still don’t know what kind of weapon Azwel could have. We don’t really have to worry about spears now because of Mi-Na for one...

But something tells me if axes were a CaS style in III, maybe Rock would have repped that or even Bangoo.

Could trophies also possibly spill some beans? I know those tend to get shown early on.

But what’s this rumor about a raft stage I’ve read about in some posts further back?

Personally just want Rock info to get it over with. My other hope is that Nightmare-Siegfried had a wide enough gap from their reveals. Kilik to Mi-Na even wider. I’m thinking similar moveset “brothers” wouldn’t be revealed so close to one another. Hwang did miss III’s regular roster, so Rock can miss this one.

The second new character could have pretty much any weapon whatsoever at this point, SC's new weapon styles get weirder every game.

I'm guessing it'll be a magical thing if it does end up being a boss.
