Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

People playing a game that has had throw breaks be a complete guess for years really out here complaining about the level of skill of a mechanic with risk, far more than 3 options, and weighted strengths depending on the character lol.

But you generally cant grab someone in the middle of their offensive attacks. Its not as if you hold the buttons down to automatically grab them once they get in range. It actually requires some positioning and timing.

I'll say i'm a bit concerned with RE but it doesnt mean i'm not excited about the game or wont at least try to deal with it.

Well i if you consider 80 - 90 % of a match being RE then fine, i guess thats called "strategic placement". Not to me it isnt, i want to play Soulcalibur, not bait the RE calibur.

If you and i are in a match, and you are far better than me, and i know you are better there is never a time when it is NOT in my interest to use RE. Even if its spammed because you'll just punish everything else i do more efficiently anyway. At most i'll just sneak in occasional regular hits between REs and only increase the frequency of standard hits slowly or by one attack still spamming RE every other time.

There isnt a lot of thought, strategy, execution barrier or any other sort of skill required to do that.
Except that... that wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. If I'm better than you, then part of my "being better", is recognizing that you're relying on RE to being with. There IS a time where it's not in your best interest, because you'd be getting baited and punished. At some point, you'd start thinking to not do that, right? There's also the length of time you hold the RE. I can just do a fast recovery poke and still step you after you've parried it.

RE isn't really a free bailout for getting pressured. So I'm not understanding how using it 80-90% of a match would even help.

The best use for endless stages was getting that stupid achievement, The Wind of Battle, for moving 87600 meters in battle. God, that was so stupid. 10000 meters in SoulCalibur IV was fine, but whoever decided to crank it up almost 9x made a terrible decision. I hope it's not back for SoulCalibur VI.

Still the only thing keeping me from the platinum in SCV. Maybe I'll have to go back and do the ol' rubber band trick some time.

Let's talk about trophies
fuck... i forgot there's gonna be achievements... wonder what absurd shit we'll have to do.
Hope there's no online trophies, I just don't like online trophies. Also they better be good ones, I hated doa5 and sfv survival mode trophy it's still hunting me. When do trophies/achievements be leaked anyways?

I just realized, if Geralt does have seven weapons to choose from, they might be weapons from the other Witcher schools. For example, his 1P would be the School of the Wolf, while some others might be the schools of the Serpent, Cat, Bear, and Griffin.

Is anyone going to miss the endless stages from SoulCalibur V?
Yes and no. I like the idea of an infinite stage, but I don't like the way it was implemented in SC5.
The right way to implement an infinite stage would be something like Infinite Azure from Tekken 7. Sometimes less is more.

Infinite Azure is very much similar to Utopia of the Blessed, very minimal, just white for as far as the eye can see, until hell is unleashed and the stage stops being an infinite stage. It's really the best of both worlds all in one stage, and a great implementation.

There are six Witcher schools so perhaps he will have one from each and then a joke weapon (any of the ones below look like a potential joke weapon?).
There is a possibility also that Joke weapons will not get a description in the museum or might not be shown in the image below as they might be special unlockables.

The only infinite stage that I actually liked was Utopia of the Blessed. It was the only one that really was able to hide the rotating background "illusion" and it also turned into a non-infinite for the final battle. It also had a great soundtrack,
I will definitely be buying its track "Sacred Dawn" if they have it as DLC in VI. I love epic moods like that.

p.s. But it better be the story version with that short but sweet choir-only intro, like this.

Edit: D: still giving me the goosebumps.

It would be great to have costumes from the other Witcher schools.
I'd be glad to buy them as DLC content.

Man i was thinking that Okubo not only was working on SC6 but also T7 season 2. This guy in a mindblow, also with the fact that he played a huge role in Tekken 7 development, it's literary like Okubo is actually the true hero of 3D fighting game on this generation of consoles. This guy deserve all the praises and respect.

It's always great to see new faces that bring great things in the VG industrie, and quite rare as well, especially in the 3D fighting game genre.

I've done some sleuthing over in the roster speculation thread, but since I know far more people visit this thread than that thread, I figured I'd also share my findings here, as it's also good general information, not necessarily just for roster speculation. It's about the two screenshots from the modes trailer, showing the weapons gallery in the museum:

Alright, so I've done some investigating and some translating to get some more information from the modes trailer, particularly about the two screenshots from the museum for the weapons, to see if they put any hints in there. I've gathered that it does appear that each character is going to be getting 7 weapons, that joke weapons don't appear to be a thing (or if they are, then they're not in the museum, but that doesn't make any sense, because joke weapons were in the museum in prior games), and also that not every character is going to get a Soul Edge, so the theory that everyone's seventh weapon is going to be Soul Edge for Inferno to use as a mimic is also out the window. So it just happens to be that Ivy is apparently getting Soul Edge for the first time, not counting Soul Edge (Complete) from SoulCalibur II, because everyone got one of those. Another thing of note is that it also doesn't appear that 2P weapons for everyone is going to be a thing, since none of the folks in the museum seem to have them.

So, starting us off with the first screenshot, we're in Xianghua's territory. We don't see her first weapon (even though, without a doubt, it's Krita-Yuga), but we do see her other six weapons, as follows:
Qing Long
Makhaira
Kard
Northern Star
Straight Sword
Soul Calibur

Pretty standard fare for Xianghua, really, though she is inheriting Makhaira from Leixia. There is a potential (!) red flag here, in that she also has QIng Long, which was Leixia's curved sword stand-in for lack of a Korean swordsman in SoulCalibur V. That being said, Xianghua did have this weapon in SoulCalibur II, but it went by a different name, Qi Xing Sword, so I wouldn't take it, in and of itself, as a deconfirmation of Hwang. Though it is notable that Xianghua did not have it in SoulCalibur III or SoulCalibur IV, as Hwang had it in SoulCalibur III and Yun-seong had it in SoulCalibur IV, so it's... let's just call it a 50/50. There's still plenty of curved swords to go around, after all.

Next up is Yoshimitsu! Let's see what he has in store:
Manji Sword & Fu-ma Blade
菩提 (Bodhi? As in Bodhisattva? New weapon?)
Kagekiyo
Phantom Machete
Chevalier
Wooden Swords
Hihiirokane

It's mostly, pretty much, almost exactly his weapon loadout from SoulCalibur V, with the addition of his classic ultimate weapon, Hihiirokane, which will for sure be nice to see again in all its crimson glory. I'm pretty sure my translation here is accurate, and I'll go ahead and address the weird elephant in the room... it actually appears that Yoshimitsu, the man whose name is supposed to be earned by his possession of the sword, Yoshimitsu, does not actually, in fact, use the sword Yoshimitsu! I'm personally chalking this up to the fact that in the story, Voldo steals Yoshimitsu from Yoshimitsu, and so, in the meanwhile, he's using Manji Sword as a temporary stand-in. It's just kinda weird that none of his other weapons are Yoshimitsu, either, for when he reclaims it. I'm really not sure about the second weapon, either, as he's never had a weapon by this name.

And, lastly, the highlighted weapon on the page is... Nightmare's Soul Edge. Nothing really special to say here, kind of a shame we can't see what other fun weapons that NIghtmare will be able to wield in this game. Oh well. On to page two!

This time, we're looking at Mitsurugi's exotic blades. Again, his first weapon is missing, like Xianghua's, but we can practically guarantee that it's Shishi-oh. What about the rest? Let's see:
Damascus Sword
Tyrfing
Hide in Shadow
Two-Handed Sword
Kokuenra
Masamune

I guess Tyrfing wasn't good enough, because we also have the classic European-style sword again, the Two-Handed Sword! I'm actually really happy about this, since I vastly prefer its design over Tyrfing. The others are pretty much staples for Mitsurugi, and it's nice to see that he got the real Masamune back this time. It's nice to see Kokuenra making a return as well.

Moving on, the next in line is none other than Seong Mi-na! Who has a couple oddities in her list:
Scarlet Thunder
翠雲 (Green/Jade/Emerald Cloud? New weapon?)
Ambassador
Halberd
Hraesvelgr
Hyup Do
太古の槍 (Ancient Spear/Lance? New weapon?)

I'm not sure if it's just the blur, my awful vision, my rudimentary ability to decipher kanji, or somewhere inbetween, but I just have no idea what the second one is supposed to be. Not even a little bit of a clue. The obvious choice would be Defender, but that would be written in katakana, so that's not it. The rest of her weapons are basically exactly what she had in SoulCalibur III and SoulCalibur IV, and the last one, I'm not for sure. It's Ancient... something! Again, I just can't decipher the last kanji, so maybe someone more skilled than I can figure it out. But I really have no idea what it could be, perhaps another new weapon like Yoshimitsu's Bodhi(sattva)? Last weird thing is that Hyup Do (pictured) really seems out of place, since it's usually lower in the chain. Hraesvelgr is somewhat her ultimate weapon, even! I wonder what's up with the ordering.

And last, but not least, but also not very exciting, we have Taki's Rekki-Maru & Mekki-Maru. Nothing else really to say about them.

Edit: Added translation for Mi-na's last weapon, thanks to @Ninjaguy446 for the assistance!

Edit 2: Added translation for Mi-na's second weapon, thanks again to @Ninjaguy446 for having sharp eyes!
