Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

TGS will be Raphael and gameplay/modes. No more to reveal after that but inferno. I’m disappointed in the roster, but there is hope that DLC can remedy it. Unfortunately some characters who slip through the cracks will probably never be in a soul calibur game again.

To be honest I would have been a bit more understanding if they had at least one to two new characters for the small roaster. But we only get two this time.

Anyhow, Gerry makes three.

Yeah, i mean if they went and placed a Dao on X, that is kind of it for Hwang i think. Same for Lizzy and Rock (i'll bet money we find his classic axe on Astaroth's weapons).

I dont realistically see PS placing those characters on DLC. Not when there are much higher priorities.

As for ammount of new characters, they went with quality over quantity this time again, I'm afraid. I loathe to admit, but they hit the nail on the head, I talked to some folks at work about soul calibur and all I heard wasd "oh, that fighter with Geralt in it, yeah cool". Even CD-Action, one of the bigger gaming magazines at my place had only "GERALT LOLZ" to say about the game and how great he played, saying nothing about new systems, old characters, returning to SC2, no, nothing, just a small tab about "der iz Geralt and he funz"

... Sickening, but aparently the move worked big time.

Your optimism slipping is telling :(

There are still enough dao for Hwang to get a full set:
Blue Thunder
White Storm
Kopis
Giant Butcher Knife
Dragon Sword
Ramdao
Soul Edge

And, for turnabout is fair play, Hwang taking Kopis from Xianghua would cancel out Xianghua taking Qing Long. I could see this happening.

Then, for Lizardman, it could be:
Xi Sword & Game Shield
Grudge Ax & Aya Shield
Hand Axe
Tabarzin
Lunatic
Kora
Soul Edge

Lizardman might even swap out one of the axes to also pick up Fire Blade from Sophitia, as a nod to having her style previously.

Additional guests will make a bigger splash and help this game far more than any returning popular characters could.

But why would they bother with doing that at all instead of just leaving the Dao where it belongs? I think they are not doing something like this unless there is a good reason.

To be fair, Xianghua also had Qing Long (named Qi Xing Sword, but bearing the same design) in SCII, a game with Yun Seong and the dao-wielding Assassin.

It could be that they were trying to reuse as many SoulCalibur V assets while remaining faithful to the originals at the same time, because taking any assets from SoulCalibur IV would require more work to bring up to speed. Kopis was not in SoulCalibur V, but Qing Long was, however it was already modified to be more appropriately wielded by Leixia, given the tassel and a slimmer blade, so it makes more sense to have Xianghua use it, and it doubles as a throwback to her using it back in SoulCalibur II.

Kopis, on the other hand, is more neutral looking a sword, not really inherently masculine or feminine, so Hwang would be able to use it without it being too out of place. Meanwhile, if they had brought Qing Long, the Yun-seong version, back from SoulCalibur IV, then they would have to also bring Kopis anyway, to give it to Xianghua, so saving a little work/effort. Another possibility is that, instead of Kopis, Hwang might get Sapara, Leixia's other curved sword that doesn't really scream femininity.

The game does have a couple major issues with the roster that may affect how its received by the public.

1. Missing favorites, particularly of the female variety.
2. Small amount of new characters.
1. Honestly? Not all that many popular characters are not in and most of who are really popular and had a chance of making it are the safe DLC bets, I think Cassandra and Setsuka are the ones people peg for the most likely, I for one think it will be Hilde and Setsuka. Otherwise, Amy, Yun and Hwang are the other characters with a decent popularity pull. All in all, none of those characters are a deal breaker for most people, even for their fans.

2. The game is banking up on nostalgia, new characters could mess up the formular and as far as purely new styles go, 2 is the the most that has been added outside guests since IV.

Is everyone okay with Raphael and Inferno being the last reveals for the base roster? Has this reboot been satisfying you so far with what has been shown?

Absolutely! There is just something about the characters that make them feel more alive and unique. Like they have a stronger personality and it reflects to their design and fighting style.

Tekken 7 also had its fans wait through two years of arcade footage (nearly 3 if you want to count location tests) before finally releasing on console with a short cinematic story, individual character stories that consisted of one fight followed by a joke cutscene that added nothing to the character's plot, gimped customization, and barely working online. At the same time, they sold fans a $25 season pass which amounted to two guest characters, two stages, a gimmicky bowling mode, and 'new' customizations that were either recolors or had been introduced in the arcade version over a year prior.

When I realise Tekken 7 has 40+ characters and 22 stages:

I don't get that comparison, Tekken 7 was release in February 2015 with 20 characters and 8 stages .SC6 is a new game that isn't even out yet (but very very soon yesss)

SC6 has more day one content than any other fighting game, and looks rich even compare to a NRS games.

Remind me of those who were comparing SF5 to USF4... doesn't make sens to me. If we are about comparing, it's SF5 VS SF4 vanilla not VS an USF4 that was updated for almost a decade lol

I'm not sure where we have room for frustration, personally. We have two full story modes to play through, which will give each character their fair share of presence, as it doesn't appear that anyone is being left without support, and past that, give your custom characters agency again, as hasn't really been true since SoulCalibur III. It has the content that SoulCalibur V should have had. Less overall characters, sure, at least for right now, but with DLC, in the best case scenario, we'll push it to 27 characters. It's not impossible that some extra stages might come with the character DLC, too, so we could see more, if the game continues to get support and sells well. I know I'm more than a little optimistic, but as I said before, no matter what happens, the game, as it is right now, is already a vast improvement over SoulCalibur V, for absolutely certain, and, in my personal opinion, better than SoulCalibur IV as well, which let me down.

I dont understand why Soul series had been starting to decrease of content since SC3, games after 4 escpecially feels like empty of characters, stages etc and million of modes and online play and costume pack won't blurr the feeling. It's rly sad

But the initial release of Tekken 7 wasn't designed to be the final release, while with SC6 there's no indication they'll be doing anything more with the game once the season pass is out. With Tekken 7 everyone knew they'd eventually do a console release with more content. I think I would be okay with an alternative universe where Soul Calibur 6 was in arcades first as that would have meant a longer development time.
