Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

I'm generally opposed to non-crossover fighting games having an excess amount of guest characters but I'm curious what you guys think of Samurai Shodown adding the Warden from For Honor as a guest character? I would've thought they would add an actual character like Apollyon instead of a generic Warden but I guess this works too.

If Bandai Namco decides to add a For Honor guest for SOULCALIBUR VI, would you guys be opposed to it? I'm personally against it due to having a lot of guests already but I do have to admit that a For Honor guest makes more sense than 2B (this is ironic coming from me since I'm a huge NieR: Automata fan who mostly played 2B in SOULCALIBUR VI lol). And although it makes a lot of sense, a generic character from For Honor wouldn't bring in the same impact and sales as an iconic character like Cloud nor would it bring the same level of hype as introducing a brand new character.

The character is the definition of generic. I don't see why they needed this character to do a western knight in armor sort of fighter. I don't feel any excitement at the idea of a For Honor crossover if its gonna be some random dude covered up by armor.

I have absolutely no qualms with them adding as many guests as they choose: the guests are obviously rather essential to their marketing strategies to make the season passes viable, and there's probably no path to expanding the roster into a third season unless it involves a guest character helping to justify the expense by helping to promote the product as a whole. Furthermore, I think guests are good for mixing up the formula, helping to keep the franchise from becoming stale and making the fabric of any given entry's collection of mechanics richer.

But all of that said, I do think you hit the nail on the head as to why we probably should not expect a For Honor character in SCVI: this is something that I (and I believe a number of others) speculated on very early into SCVI's production, but even at that point it seemed like the window (in terms of FH having the kind of cross promotional appeal namco would be looking for in a guest's franchise of origin) was closing rapidly: I just can't imagine Namco would see much value in such a choice at this point. Mind you, it is true that they were willing to take a chance on Haohmaru despite SS not being the most massively influential of franchise's, but at the least the most recent SS game was relatively fresh at the time they began to importing process, and we all kind of saw how that situation played out from some playful banter between developers on Twitter. I just can't imagine, taking the situation altogether, that For Honor is at the top of the list of candidate properties they'd like to borrow a character from. It is something of a shame though, as some of those characters surely do seem like they would fit in Soulcal's milieu fairly well.

As to what inspired the generic choice of character for Samurai Shodown, your guess is as good as mine. I would say it seems like the type of choice that was likely made on Ubisoft's end, but that doesn't tell us much as to the reasoning. Perhaps they just felt the generic character class would be a more universally recognizable representative of the franchise than a character heavily implicated int he game's lore but less so its marketing push.

Everybody, can you please help me in asking Namco to put all the SC soundtracks in https://www.bandcamp.com ? Companies are putting more and more soundtracks up on Bandcamp. You get the option to stream your music and/or download MP3s AND FLACs.

I doubt very much they will do it, but I'll lend my voice to try to make it happen. On a side note, I had completely forgotten Yoko Shimomura was the lead composer on SFII. Man she has had such brilliant range across her career.

Warden is pretty generic in terms of appearance, but his animations would be welcomed in SC6 if Geralt wasn't around. His executions could be the basis for a lot of throws / attack throws.

• Warden could have fit the guest character that is also low skill floor, bread n butter good-all-around character.

• Having an entire closed helm is actually a draw back in SC6 because you don't relate to a metal mask as well as the character underneath, while in For Honor the purpose was to customize it. SC6 already has CAS mode, so

• Siegfried is always going to outshine a warden class knight simply because anime greatsword zweihanders > western longsword.

Do you have a prime candidate you would want as guest DLC in mind?

I feel like one more season would be enough to get the rest of the missing legacy characters to the game: Yun Seong, Rock, Algol, and Lizardman.

Also, if we do get a season 3, i highly doubt we'll get another guest character. I feel like the game is too old and not as alive as it once was. I hope we don't, anyways.

Thanks. And yes, Yoko Shimomura has created timeless classics and will go down in history as one of the best composers!

Something worth noting when it comes to Calibur characters appearing as guests in other fighting games. A few years ago, a Killer instinct staff member tweeted to Harada that he wanted to have Yoshimitsu as a guest character. If Microsoft pulls it's thumb out of it's arse and green lights another KI game, then the possibility of Yoshimitsu being a guest in there is highly likely. Yoshimitsu would fit right in and would represent Calibur as well as Tekken.

So... do you think we’ll get the next DLC character announced anytime soon? Tomorrow perhaps?
I hope so, but a lot is uncertain at the moment. I'm not trying to be depressing but it it might be worth tempering expectations, Okubo was talking about how it is difficult to adjust to the new conditions.

Weird how quickly Samurai Shodown got all their characters (8 total) in the 2 DLCS out so quickly
