Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

SCVI is a side event on July 17. The finals are on July 20.

Hopefully their is a Roundtable after EVO is over.

This is not a good sign having SC6 in the side tournaments. Same can be said at the round table. Unlike say KOF15 where they're doing a trailer reveal every week of an upcoming game, for a season 3 of an existing game you would want as many potential buyer eyes watching the reveal trailer. I'm keeping my hopes up, but after seeing this it has dwindled quite a bit. I really hope I'm wrong.

SCVI doesn't have Rollback Netcode like Tekken 7, MK11 Ultimate, Guilty Gear Strive. I think Granblue is in the main lineup is because it was the only fighting game that came out in 2020. Hopefully when EVO Online 2021 is over Setsuka's normals will be gone & Vernal Reflection will finally being fixed so all her JFs 214, & 236 inputs will do insane DMG when Season 3 starts.

Was SC6 previously one of the main tournaments at EVO, and not a side one? :( Poo, that is discouraging, then. It's a downgrade.
Hope only brings disappointment. :sc3amy2:

You do bring up a very good point considering this is an online tournament, so I hope you're right.

SCVI was at 3 main EVOs: EVO Japan 2019, EVO US 2019, & EVO Japan 2020. SCVI was announced as a main game for EVO 2020, but EVO 2020 was cancelled by COVID & Mr. WIzard was cancelled for stuff that happened 20 years ago.

For those without the context to know what Frayhau dismisses as "stuff" here (with phrasing that implies this is a case of cancel culture run amuck regarding something that shouldn't be considered relevant 20 years later) the "stuff" in question is that Wizard purportedly paid minors to take off their clothes for him. Frayhau...that's kind of a big deal no matter how many years have passed, especially when the exploited minors in question were members of the same community in which said person continued to have a massively significant role.

People like Setsuka being terribly designed in SCVI with EZ Inputs.
Or...virtually nobody (and literally nobody when it comes to these boards) agrees with your assessment that the moveset is "terribly designed with EZ Inputs"--at least, not the extent that you push the changes as game-breaking flaws of massive import.

I really wish Project Soul or Okubo made a statement making it 100% clear that season 3 wasn't happening. Instead they made it 100% clear that season 3 wasn't happening within the game itself by ending the season 2 DLC with a sequel hook, and outright saying that the story was now going past the timeline of Soul Calibur VI. Even if one of the characters had looked directly at the screen and said "Looks like a whole new chapter of this tale is about to begin." people still would've ignored it and continued to speculate about season 3.

"It's only been half a year since season 2 ended! Any day now! I'm sure they'll announce season 3 at the Ontario Fish Stick Festival!"

Haha--yep, there's definitely been some (as you point out, entirely predictable) denial at work here. I mean, it's understandable not just in the sense that people tend to embrace wishful thinking in such cases, but also from the fact that indicators were pretty good up until about a year and a half ago that the continuing support DLC was probably going to go the distance in a significant way for this entry. In fact, I would still guess that was in fact the plan until COVID complicated the development equation significantly. But at this point, the writing has been on the wall for a while, I think. Don't get me wrong, if I a have to eat crow on this one, it will be a pretty happy occasion to have to do so, if it means a season 3. But I just don't think that's going to be the case, for reasons relating to market feasibility and production realities we've discussed ad nauseum in this thread over the last year.

That said, I don't think I blame Okubo or PS for not signposting this better: they probably have only recently been certain of the outcome themselves. They really don't have the authority within Namco to make this kind of announcement on their own onus, and even to the extent they could push to be more clear with fans, they have no real impetus to do so and foreclose that longshot possibility of an 11th hour reprieve for the third season; I'd be very surprised if even they knew for certain what was happening when they were putting the final touches on the season two content. For that matter, even looking at Namco as a whole, the cost-benefit rationale for revealing that no further content is coming for the game (if indeed there was any formal determination about that at any point--there may not have been more than a "wait and see" call) is pretty bad: it can only stall enthusiasm for the product afterall.

But...yeah...I'd be pretty shocked to see a season 3 at this point, considering the timeline of the last two seasons and how the second in particular limped in, compounded by the factors of COVID, the transfer of priorities to the next gen, the overall value of the property within Namco's massive portfolio, and (of course) the long, uninterrupted period of radio science from the devs. RIP Project Soul, Version SCVI. See you in 2025 Rock, Aeon, and Yun-Seong. Tough luck altogether, Li Long.

I was watching the credits of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown and noticed "Daishi Odashima" in the programming credits. A shame his twitter is basically gone, but nice to see him still making games.

I did read that Daishi went to SEGA after leaving Namco after SCV's release.

People don't understand that Setsuka having EZ Normals are a huge problem.

I'm still not ruling out that the devs have been hard at work developing a Switch port, especially with the recent rumours of a revised, more powerful Switch set to be announced at E3 or before by Nintendo.

I just think add Link to the game (which could tie in to the Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary this year) and a Switch version will practically print money.
