Elitists, and Why We Need Them

Elitism is GAY.

The definition of it is to believe something should be ruled by only those elite at it. Whatever.

I don't share this belief because it just so happens that nothing belongs to anybody. The only thing you own is YOURSELF. If I'm passionate about something, I'm willing to be as competitive as I can (with MYSELF) in order to learn and grow from it. It's all personal growth. This has nothing to do with surrounding myself ONLY around those that are also great at it. You will learn from ALL kinds of enthusiasts, despite their "skill level". You have to balance things, you fucking assholes!!!

Peace out.

P.S.
Oh yeah, while I don't believe in elitism...I can utterly destroy you in Soulcalibur. Now whut?

Like people said I think the phrase was suppose to be "an elite" and not "an elitist" in the OP's post. So we should all just make the assumption from now on that THAT is what he/she/it meant. That being said, you can learn the greatest things from the smallest of things... meaning that in a situation like this you never know what you might learn from someone that "doesn't belong" in your "elite" circle. On the one hand its great to get groups of people that are hardcore lovers of the game and hardcore AT the game. But sometimes its good to get a chance to see how good the "little guy" is. Thats the whole points of things like try-outs and such. Look at a very "elite" sport like football. HELL look at Kurt Warner. The boy comes from out of nowhere...goes and builds himself up out of the radar...goes and becomes good at arena football and gets picked up BECAUSE THEY HAVE TRYOUTS AND SCOUTS. And what does he do?? Leads teams to super bowls and super bowl wins. Every major sport has a tryout for people that are not "in the group of elites" becuase you never know when the next big thing will come or where it will come from. The only thing that can be completely agreed upon is that people who don't want to TRY to be better are the people you might wanan keep out of your little circle of bitches and hoesery :)

The belief in rule by the elite is not a completely bad idea. The premise behind it is that things tend to be better when smarter/better people are ruling, rather than stupider/worse. This has been considered a principle of political science ever since Aristotle wrote the Politics. The problems behind it of course, is that a system in theory don't always work that way in practice, leading to tyranny of a minority. So yeah, that's why we look for balance as well.

Take the US government for example, and you see that there is a lot of elitism as well as populism hardwired into the system. The president, supreme court, and originally the Senate, were all systems which are in place because of mistrust of democracy to always do the right thing. Pretty much, we vote for a single person who we believe will make better decisions than we will, though presidential elections have become a lot more populist for obvious reasons.

I never said that everyone should be an elitist, nor that they are always right. I was just looking at a certain type of individual who gets a lot of criticism, and pointing out good points that are inherent in their attitude that are important for a good community, because the principles of Aristotle's Politics apply to any body politic, not just gaming communities. But you can all read it how you like, this is only a video game, and its a waste of perfectly good time to intellectualize over it.

I really do think the better term to use is elite though....not elitest.

we do need elites, even if they are asshole elites its variety. elitests.....well....only if you are good. the ones that arent are just annoying (yes I know you are going to ask me, how are the good elitests not annoying....well they are but they provide helpful tips along with the annoying rants, just gotta look through the bullshit.)

iKotomi
Is probably trying to justify being a Jerk...or something.

Demanding dedication, and excellence means you're passionate about the game.
But if you want to separate yourself from the rest, and create lines between outsides, because they don't meet your standards or whatever...by Definition I would call you Elitist.

Personally I don't tolerate jerks, especially people that insult new players just because they posted a very ignorant post.
I do have elitist views however...I do think custom characters are tasteless, I hate Yoda, and such things.

However, I don't go out of my way to say what I think, because it is negative, and I am addressing fellow human beings.

We don't need elitists, what community wants idiots that will seat on their asses and decide who should or shouldn't play the game. Or make it hard for people to join, by insulting them. This is isn't some fancy exclusive rich guy's club.

Shouldn't it be important to note that generally even elites and elitests who are elites once started out as noobs and scrubs. No offense, but if you put new people down, you are putting what you once were down, and the new people are ignorant?

Ignorance means they choose not to learn what is available, but if they are new then how can you expect them to be knowledgable? If they have played for many months it would be ignorance, but not if they have only been playing for a short time.

I agree with a_bad_idea's first post. I dont agree with ikotomi's elitist views. I can see where elitism would be helpful in some situations, but overall I dont find it to be a good idea.

Everybody does the same things that so-called "Elitists" do, and just don't realize it.

While an Elitist makes a distinction between who is good and who is bad, then chooses who to associate with on a regular basis.
How do you choose your friends? Usually through the same means. You determine who you like and who you dislike, and start acting accordingly.

You occasionally run into someone like myself, who is willing to be friends with anyone who wants it, but that is not the norm. This whole "Elitist good or bad" discussion is pointless complaining from people on the opposite side of the fence.

The way I see it, the single defining characteristic of an elitist is the belief the refusal to be mediocre.

Your grammar is mediocre, elitist.

Whatever your point was, it's been overshadowed by the fact that you compared being a Soul Calibur elitist to being the President of the United States.

Take the US government for example, and you see that there is a lot of elitism as well as populism hardwired into the system. The president, supreme court, and originally the Senate, were all systems which are in place because of mistrust of democracy to always do the right thing.

Yes, because it's such a horrible thing to explain a point by using a subject that everyone is familiar with.

This thread started off on a good point but of course the masses come in with the hatred for the word 'elitist' and suddenly it turns into a pointless thread with people slinging insults. Gotta love people, especially on the internet. KDZ pretty much ended the thread with his post, that's about as good of an ending as we are going to get at this point.

I dont think we need any type of stereotype title, elitist, scrubs, noobs, KDZ, etc.......if anything what we REALLY need are friends and hugs....

So ill put myself on the line and ask for a giant bro hug right....now

ABI- There are nice elitists, jackass elitists, and self proclaimed elitists.

Nice elitists will help those worse than themselves get better at the game. They are the ones who write guides to help out new players and generally answer questions in a respectful way assuming respect was given from the start.

Jackass elitists are the type of people who really just don't give a shit about newer players. They tend to only want to play against people they know are good and anyone else is a waste of time. This extends to being rude as well, like in your story saying something condescending like "learn to play" when the person is asking a legitimate question nicely.

Self proclaimed elitists are the ones who think they know what they are talking about and think they are good when they are actually not. You might as well just call them trolls, but again there are some people who can be a mix of nice and self proclaimed (think they are the best and try to help though they just haven't come across the competitive scene is a good example).

Of course there are also non-extreme versions of the nice / jackass elitists, but yeah I agree that being a jackass just to be a jackass is counter productive for a communities growth.

Very well said. I think that my main problem is those self proclaimed elitists. People who may be a little better than you and speak as if they know all there is to know. Now I am willing to learn from anyone however when these very same people get beat they bring up all kinds of excuses and talk shit as if it was a fluke. I can't stand a fake fuck in any form and these whores should be drawn and quartered. As far as the nice ones they are a blessing and I've met more than a few who are the main reason I am still part of this community. The jack ass ones are also people who I begrudge nothing. These are the people who get the competitive juices flowing. People you meet, get beaten by, and strive to get better to beat. The thing is, they are both the genuine article. I have no problem with people better than me as long as they are the real deal. Those fake fucks are what will discourage anyone from playing if they are new to the game. Hunt 'em, find 'em, and eradicate them.
That's just my humble opinion.
