EVO Update: Top 8

With the rest of the mods enjoying the nice, cool Vegas casino weather, I felt it was appropriate to update everyone with how yesterday's matches went if for whatever reason you're having trouble (like I initially was) finding the results/brackets, or maybe you're just new to the scene and not quite sure where to go for information.

With a full day off today (Saturday) before they finish out top 8 (Sunday), you gotta keep yourself occupied somehow, right? If you haven't been paying attention to the biggest and hypest tournament in the world, you'll be in for some surprises

Top 8

Winners:
Xephukai (USA) - Asta (also, Patroklos)
Something-Unique (USA) - Pyrrha
Shen Chan (SG) - Cervantes
CRNA|Ruka (JAP) - Patroklos

Losers:
Kura (KOR) - Patroklos
Woahhzz (USA) - Alpha Patroklos
Shining Decapon (JAP) - Tira
Kamaage (JAP) - Mitsurugi

TOP 8 STARTS AT 10 AM PST. DON'T MISS IT!!!!!

HEADLINES:
-France out!
In a surprising turn of events, both Keev and Kayane lost some tough (extremely hype) matches. Keev now has himself an official EVO nemesis having both losses come from the same player. [NOTE: The EVO bracket is incorrect for the Keev/Kura match; Keev did NOT win that match.]

-International players sans France having a strong performance!
If you were watching the stream and listening to the commentary, you probably noticed that even players like Bibulus were taken aback by the performance of foreign players not normally known for their SC dominance, such as the Singaporeans.

-MAJOR comebacks!
Although this is certainly true for many specific matches (there were SO many close matches to even begin to list), there were some players that have straight-up faced the gauntlet in terms of their bracket. Kamaage (who you'll notice is in the loser's side of top 8) was knocked into the loser's side second round... and hasn't looked back since, stringing along an impressive number of wins to get in to the final 8.

-Some interesting character selections...
We knew we were going to see a lot of Nightmare, Natsu, Mitsu and Violas (to name a few), but... regular Patroklos? Three of the top 8 are regular P players, and Xeph used him in certain match-ups. Looks like that shin kick is making waves. Not to mention, there's even a Japanese Tira that sneaked in there... although his dominance in some matches would certainly mock my use of the word "sneaked."

-Word of the day: Execution
Not just in the sense of killing someone (metaphorically speaking, of course), but also technical execution. So many rounds and matches were won because of clutch, high-difficulty moments... and some were lost because of wasted opportunities. A lesson to newer players: Your ability to execute when needed is crucial on a stage like this.

-Asia VS the US of A!
Of the final 8 spots, the US holds 3 (2 in winner's) while Asian players hold the other 5 (Japan with 3, Korea with 1, and Singapore with 1). With Europe being such an SC hotspot, how surprised is everyone that this game seems to have quite a following in Asia?!?!

-So many killers...
If EVO has taught us anything so far, it's that there are a lot of skilled players in Calibur V, and any one of them can take any given event on any given day. For instance, despite France not making top 8, that doesn't mean that they weren't prepared or didn't play strongly: Keev and Kayane's matches were some of the hypest of the day. Expect more players to surface and this game to have a long shelf-life.

========================

That's all I have for right now. I was not able to catch every match, so if there's something you feel is worth noting as a headline, feel free to comment and I'll add it to the main post. Otherwise, fire away with any of your comments/opinions on how the hypest event of the year has turned out thus far! Oh, and don't forget to throw out some predictions!

I glad Decopon won EVO. This shows that not believing in patch notes or complaining about them can't drive away the ability to adapt to patch changes. Patch 1.04 is only going to be about fixing broken stuff. The balance is great. For anyone saying "My character is unviable" or "Your character is broken" learn character match ups and go to practice mode to deal with certain characters moves that you are having trouble with. Watching Omega DR use Siegfried to beat Keev at the SC World Tournament, Hawkeye using Natsu to win MLG Spring Championship, and now Decopon winning Evo with Tira shows that no character is bad, it's how you use them. This is a great way of evolving the game. I can't wait to see someone prove everyone wrong with Z.W.E.I. and show how viable Leixia is.

My new Hero is Shining Decopon...He was just invincible today. His mental was TOO strong, nobody could beat him in TOP8, for sure.

I heard some people said he just had luck ? Seriously ? Do you guys really know how to play Soul Calibur ? Winning a tournament with more than 400 players, with some of the best players from different countries, and just watch his matches, he destroyed every opponent mentally and in the game, and he came back all the way from Losers... you can't talk about luck. Or you guys have to show up and prove he's not that good !

The only words I could say during his matches were "Holy shit!" and "OH MY GOD." That was so hype it was hard to breathe!
Now I can tell him Congratulations and Thanks for this great lesson : people complained so much about Viola, Mitsu, Alpha, Algol blablabla...and none of them won EVO.

Well done decopon!

And you idiots. Decopon even says Tira is A or S tier. whole of japan thinks so. they just won evo. stop your whining.

Also, this game is balanced... and this is easily the best top 8 ive seen in any US major.

And some funny person said sieg is counterpick against japan >< these guys play regularly against siegfried. I didn't have an easy time in freeplay vs all the guys... Im was just that good in that tournament ;)

So glad to see Decopon win. I remember watching a lot of his online videos to learn how to play Tira. But I didn't expect him to be this good as most of his videos were against (seemingly) scrubbier online players.

Can't believe he pulled off Tira's crazy 3AA wall combo, which is a bit off-axis, on the biggest stage. And even threw in her JF 4B.B.B just to showboat (when 3B works just as well in that wall combo for similar damage). And that reaction time on blocking 2K right into CE. That's just flat out Decopon dominating.

Trust me man I use to think zwei was bad at first, now am tired of people thinking he is the worst in the game...I think not haha lol he isn't all that bad..that day will come when he will surprise people I shall be waiting for that day....

I was just joking to troll shen yu (because lots of people keep saying how japan is free to sieg) people never see the hidden part in black letters :(

BTW great sieg perfomance at EVO Shen Yuan!

Congrats to everyone who participated at EVO and specially Decapon!!!
Awesome tournament! It had a ton of epic matches and it was full of surprises, (for me at least)! <3

I was really pulling for Woahhzz that entire time. But Decopon's Play was extremely strong. I'm glad to see that it's more than just the same characters on top again. The top 5 were all different characters and the entire Tourney was amazing.

Grats to Decopon, Shen Chan, SU, and Woahhzz for the top 4 finishes. The Asians showed out this Evo and we need to make sure we show them up next year! Hope to see this big of a turnout or even bigger at the next major.

Is there any way of viewing the other matches? I was interested in watching Kayane's Viola in particular.

I always thought Tira was one of the better characters at closing out a round. You get caught by Gloomy 3B might as well start thinking about your strategy for next round because you ain't getting back up.

Very happy to see players kicking ass with some of the lesser used characters. Shen Yuan almost made me want to main Seigfried again :)

Decopon! Congrats! Definitely an awesome display from all players! Makes me even more glad that I stuck with Tira.
