He is an excellent idea with terrible execution for many reasons:
  • You have no idea he even exists as a boss (because you actually saw him in Nightmare's ending) and there is nothing that indicates his existance until you either find him by accident or on the internet
  • Tales of Souls had way too many branching paths and there was no indication that they were anything other than a choice for the next opponent or additional rewards
  • Tales of Souls was also incredibly unforgiving, so you'd have a challenge way before finding out about him, because fights became harder and harder and you couldn't lose ONCE
  • There was no decent reward for defeating him. You only got something for challenge mode, which allowed you to directly fight him, but outside that, IIRC, you'd only get a The Master weapon, which was a weapon with NO ADDITIONAL EFFECTS, and that you could easily get by completing every training mission for the character. You didn't even unlock Night Terror
  • He is one ugly motherfucker! Look at him, he looks like a Resident Evil monster with a cliché horror sword and MMO wings, he doesn't look awesome, like Nightmare, only repulsive and, granted, more powerful
So, yes, the idea of a secret more challenging boss that you reach under specific conditions is awesome, but they fucked up so bad that it ended up being more of a frustration.

I don't see the big deal. Most people had internet back when the game came out so it's not like anyone wouldn't have known about him. From what I remember his existence was common knowledge within a few days of the game's release. Sure he was hard to reach since you weren't allowed to lose a match but I'd say that's a good thing. Games these days have gotten too easy. At least it wasn't as frustratingly difficult as Legendary Souls mode in V.

Anyway, Night Terror is cool but he should never be playable. Not unless he's kept to offline modes only.

We must wait until Friday. The colour of his weapon reminds me a little bit colour of Edge Master weapons. Could he be an Edge Master apprentice?

And then maybe got abandoned and neglected by Edgemaster, cause that one was more focusing on training Kilik more? And then he moved on and has been adopt by an Assassin's Sect where he became what he became. So that's why he hate Kilik? Maybe that's the lore? Sounds sick imo

So what do you guys think about Namco deciding to reboot the story? I had a feeling they were going to do that since the new characters were so heavily disliked for the most part and without them there wasn't much of a reason to keep the 17-year time jump. It was the best thing they could've done in my opinion.

I think with the SCV reception, roster wise especially, going back in the time storywise was the best thing they could have done.

Yep, I think the same.

SCV had many clones that's not new characters.

Patro, Pyrrah, Zwei, Viola, Aeon, Natsu, Xiba & Leixia.

I don't count Elysium, Alpha and Omega stuffs.

Personally Aeon was new to me cause i skipped that sc4 psp (i don't like fgs in portables)

And even if you wanna discount the replacements, there were still a lot of new characters. Natsu and Xiba had a lot of new stuffs and weren't just copy/pasta of Taki and Kilik, but i agree that Leixia was almost a copy/pasta of Xiangh. Pyrrah was as well basically a side version of Sophie but quite different enough tho. Zwei, Viola, & Patro were 100% NEW. (As well as Aeon if you skipped sc4 psp)

While 4 Had only one new legit character, aka Hilde.

I think a straight reboot is lazy and dumb.

I wanna see gameplay footages of this dude:

I still think he has something to do with Nightmare. He uses a similar weapon to the NM concept art touted as real.

He also seems to have a lot of duality in his design. Everything from colour schemes to the weapon itself.

I can just about see him doing some NM-esque moves. Maybe a spin into heavy ground stab with the weapon. Reminds me of Samunoske from the Onimusha series, or those bird-dudes from Nioh.

I think they (Kilik & Dual-wielding guy) were both Edge Master's apprentices. Kilik was "the good guy" who choose the right path, Soul Calibur, friends with Maxi and Xianghua etc., while The Rival was less talented, jealous and choose the fast & easy way - pieces of Soul Edge. That's why his left arm (armour) is dark blue which covers the beginning of Soul Edge infection. Also the weapon colour - one side from the right arm - pure, another side from the left arm - dark blue.

The new info has come out and been translated:

SoulCalibur VI introduces the new Reversal Edge and other new features that key developers recently talked about in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]

Here are highlights from the interview:
  • The “Reversal Edge” can be performed with a single button. While pressing the button it blocks all attacks from high, middle, low, and grabs.
  • When you let go of the button the character will slash and enter a scene.
  • There are some moves that you can only pull off by consuming your Soul Charge and powering up.
  • The “Lethal Hit” is an advanced system where landing certain moves in the right condition will send the opponent flying.
  • Since there wasn’t any 3D fighters on current generation consoles, the team felt that they needed to make a new SoulCalibur.
  • The setting will take us back in time, into the year 1586. The keyword here is “reboot.”
  • Please look forward to collaborations with other works!
  • The team is focusing on making enjoyable sword fights with the press of a button using Reversal Edge.
  • Some commands that were difficult to pull off up until now have also been made to activate with just one button.
  • The Guard Impact no longer consumes your meter.
  • The team is getting help from a surprising amount of outside developers.
  • Character creation is something appealing that can’t be taken away, so keep an eye out for that.
  • Development is currently 70% complete.

So it's a reboot after all...
  • Please look forward to collaborations with other works!
Wait what? Not a guest fiesta please -_-

I sense Ivy being a target here.

Two REALLY important pieces of information, awesome!
