Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

That's the scariest thing ive seen in years..

The more I look at beautiful gameplay of SC6 the more I notice ̶h̶o̶w̶ ̶m̶u̶c̶h̶ ̶I̶v̶y̶ ̶w̶o̶u̶l̶d̶ ̶g̶e̶t̶ ̶n̶e̶r̶f̶e̶d̶ ̶d̶a̶y̶ ̶1̶ how awkward, ugly and out of place most armor breaks look. At this point I seriously want for them to remove this feature altogether or make it an optional thing for CaS, or at least only leave head armor break (because losing a helmet does look more or less normal, unlike losing you boots while keeping everything else, or completely losing armorplate while still having boots and helmet).

Warning: Essay incoming.
I personally have a massive distaste for Rock, but I will be respectful: To Rock fans, what exactly is it that you like about him, and what is it that makes it seem like him making it in over other more popular characters would be a good idea?
First of all, thanks for genuinely trying to understand other perspectives. It's very rare when discussing character preferences.

I wrote a mini-essay on what makes Rock unique in a post a few months ago:
https://8wayrun.com/threads/soul-calibur-vi-general-discussion.19804/page-78#post-737955

But that was exclusively about his backstory and his personality. There are lots of reasons why I think he'd be a strong addition to SC6, and I've organized them into a handy list.

1. He has the potential to be very popular. I know this is a bold claim, but consider that outside of SoulEdge he was always an unlockable character. And in SC1, he shared most of his movelist with Astaroth, giving players less incentive to use him. He got passed up in SC2. And when he got a mostly unique movelist in SC3 and 4, he was low-tier, again giving players less incentive to use him. This was a twofold handicap, as new players couldn't use him and experienced players didn't want to play as a weaker character. As you said, they can fix balance problems. But I think the biggest thing they could do to improve his popularity is simply to make him available from the start. If his design is cool (dinosaur skull helmet pls), a lot of players will pick him up.

2. More grapplers = more fun. I loved Rock's SC4 movelist. Admittedly, it wasn't very effective, but throwing your opponent around like a ragdoll never got old. This type of playstyle hasn't been well represented in this series, and I think it's time to change that. And I have lots of ideas for how to improve grappling in SC!

3. Story potential. Rock's story from SC1 is pretty crazy when you think about it. This gentle giant's adopted son is stolen away by a lizard monster, so he chases it to the other side of the world where he finds a desert doomsday cult that's created an army of golems based on his fighting style. But SC1 was limited in its storytelling ability to talking about the premise and only showing the happy ending. With Hiroaki's art, there's so much more we could see. How did Rock track Lizardman down? Did he arrive in town, a foreign savage covered in animal skins, and ask about lizards? Am I the only one who finds that image hilarious? And what was his reaction to finding the cult? The image of a lone warrior descending into a temple of monsters has a beautiful, Lovecraftian appeal to me. Did Rock ever confront Kunpaetku? What did he learn from him? And what did Bangoo experience during his kidnap?

To me, this all has the potential for an amazing story. It also offers potential to develop Fygul Cestmus more, which is something I've always wanted the series to do. Also, slightly off-topic, but Rock's parents were killed by Cervantes. Since Cervantes is one of the main villains of the series, it would also be nice to show his crimes actually affect one of the characters. (Typically, villains in the SC series only kill anonymous victims off-camera. Making some of these victims feel like real people would add some weight to the story.)
A more positive use of energy would be to either stop talking about Rock or talk about ways he can be improved.
Oh man, I've so many ideas on this topic.

I've talked before about how I'd like to see SC's throw system improved, but for Rock specifically I think he should get some unblockable/unbreakable throws. If Ivy can get one (and they can balance it...), there's no reason Rock shouldn't.

If I think about what moves I'd like to see Rock get, my first request would be a charge move/stance, similar to Tekken's Gigas or Street Fighter's Abigail. I imagine Rock crouching down and charging toward the opponent. Combined with his animal skins, he'd resemble a charging bison/bear/etc. He'd have a couple of attacks he could do from this charge, but he could also cancel it and go straight into a throw. This would help him close the distance with his opponent and give him a powerful mix-up tool.

Another idea for Rock, and this one is more general, is to give some of his moves armor properties. Lots of "big characters" use this in Street Fighter, Tekken and KOF, but (to the best of my knowledge) it's never been done in SoulCalibur. Basically, some of his moves would allow him to absorb a hit (and take damage), but still complete the animation. This would be a good way to distinguish him from Astaroth, who will always win in terms of pure size and strength. Rock can play a berserker-type character (no SC2 reference intended) who can take hits, ignore them, and continue fighting. Solid as a rock, one could say.

tl;dr: I like Rock.

Losing the shoes/boots is particularly bad. Followed closely by pants. I've seen enough characters naturally designed without shirts or sleeves so that is less of an issue for me. Broken helmets are totally fine.

Honestly I think they are trying to keep it consistent. I like that. I don't honestly see what else they could do other than the shoes and/or pants. Cause, for consistency sake, I feel the armor breaks will be more in line with the CaS. Can someone explain to me what's wrong with the armor break as of now? Are people really bothered by feet or something? Or is it just exploding shoes?

I would have preferred if they got bruised up and had tears and cracks than exploding shoes. Like they could just add tears to pants, shoes, and shirts. Add cracks or dents in metals. Then they could still get away with the helmet breaking and it wouldn’t look as stupid as Mitsurugi does with just lower armor break.

I'd say that my issue with it is that it's not like the chest/pants/feet/etc. pieces look damaged most of the time, they just kinda fall off and disappear? It seems more like a silly feature than a default setting (that I'm not sure we can turn off).

I was reading on other boards that if the muscular dark skin woman that they would want an Aztec warrior. Which came to my mind that the Aztec empire no longer existed at this point. Then again Sophitia and Cassandra were worshipping Greek gods instead of being Christian.

It's the same person posting here and elsewhere lol.

I love it, but maybe because I take it in a humorous tone, much like the dialogue of the characters during fights and the ridiculous juggle physics you get on a KO. I believe these are all to be taken lightheartedly. I thought that was fairly obvious when Mits is half naked. I think it will make for great times with friends as well as for commentary in tournaments, as long as people are looking at it in the right way.

Someone with twitter please ask Okubo about toggles for armor break slots. I'll repeat as many times as it takes; the game should give as much freedom of customization as a hex editor can.

Can they really easily include a feature like this for online matches though? Seems like that would be quite a strain for the game to keep track of everyone's individual settings in an online lobby.

They also cant realistically have "broken or torn" equipment instead of just removing them entirely unless we are strictly talking about standard outfits only. CAS parts mean each piece of clothing needs to essentually double because the game has to store the "clean" version and the "broken" version for everything.

I really wish they would leave shoes out of the break mechanic. It just looks silly. I dont think many people would aim for the feet too often in a fight. Legs maybe but not feet.
