Not entirely sure what to make of everything. Curious as to exactly why things are so leaky for the game, though I hope this doesn't do any negative damage to it. Still, I feel like while there are 2 obvious possibilities even if they might not make sense, there are others that are a fair bit less likely perhaps but still viable. If not immediately, then down the road, things can change. This wouldn't be the first game post-launch to alter the character select screen in an update of whatever size, and to have odd amounts of space.
Just as 2 minor but more recent examples of how a roster can and likely will change, just look at how For Honor's roster screen changed quite a bit twice over the course of the first season and I'm fairly certain is changing again with the Marching Fire expansion coming up. Then if we look to Tekken 7, Idk how it looked originally in arcades, but I know I hated the weird way it looked on console launch, especially without Eliza in my roster at first. Thing is, the current form of the roster getting 6 characters added with season 2 clearly means the roster's gonna get slightly changed in look with the update. Reason I point out all of this is just to remind everyone that even if this is representative of the final build, there's no reason things can't be changed around later should they get the chance to add more characters. Need we have a quick flashback to when people pointed out that there's by all means the potential for the roster to be scaled due to the animation loading into the selection for matches?
My expectations: The 4 slots we see could be the DLC slots, which seems likely and while it might be disappointing to lose some characters we've gotten over the years, it's not like this is a bad roster, and the other 3 DLC slots could easily cover for a lack of some old styles. Alternatively, I have to pose a theory assuming that Vergeben's source is genuine about something on the select screen not having been noticed. If those slots aren't DLC, we do have those 2 weird dots that match the ones where 2 slots in the main roster were. If we were to be optimistic, perhaps what wasn't noticed is instead that those 2 dots were actually slots in a reduced size to hide something, unused, or just to keep things looking a little more clean instead of covering character art for now. If that was the case, that could mean the 4 dots are all unlockable characters that might be kept hidden from us until we manually unlock them or are revealed right at launch.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but we weren't meant to know the whole roster before SCV, right? If so, this could be a thing. That then leaves the question: Would the DLC characters be on the sides or below the bottom row to mirror the dotted line pattern above? Sure, some people may not like how these options would look and it might be a bit off, but this is possible. Ultimately, we know absolutely nothing certain besides the official reveals, and so it's probably best to keep an open mind and patiently wait as we learn more up until release. That said, what would the roster count be at in that case? Considering CaS is one of the formerly thought 23 slots reducing it to 22, then if the 2 dots are empty locked slots then 24. With 4 DLC slots added later, bring that to 28 unless one of the dots is Tira, so 27. 28-29 if Inferno's in the center slot as assumed which I'd say is acceptable personally. If the roster can be further messed with after that with updates and we were to get a 2nd season pass, maybe more, I could see that making for a sizable and impressive roster if they had that chance.
I don't know about any of you, but I'd be more than happy to support my favorite series further if things go well enough to expand our roster and open potential for another game.
TL;DR: I'm an extremely pessimistic person normally and expect the worst case scenario with anything I like or enjoy, especially games. Delightfully proven wrong regularly enough. Yet here I am being optimistic and trying to suggest an open mind and patience. Just take some time and take things into consideration. I know it falls on deaf ears, but worth a try. Sorry for the basically essay. I just have high hopes for my favorite series to survive and potentially one day be successful enough to have an installment with all past, present, and new characters and bonus characters in the roster. That would be the real dream one day, but unrealistic and likely impossible.
