Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Right, but it follows that to have a fair comparison, we should be speaking of a game where they both attended.
Yes, but the specific comment I was responding to (albeit with tongue somewhat in cheek) was that Mi-na had "always been in Kilik's shadow"--which clearly could not happen before he (and thus his shadow) ever existed. You can't out-pedant me on this one, amiga! ;)

I have no words... I wish I had met you guys much earlier...
You’ve definitely proven yourself around here and earned a plentiful amount of respect. Keep up the good work.
There should be a comma (and maybe the word then) between SCV and he. It would’ve made the sentence make more sense, and maybe prevent the confusion. I had to read the bit twice to see the meaning myself, so I kind of get it, but the “he” is referring to Nyte, not me. If I keep praising SoulCalibur V, then Nyte will instinctively return and stamp his feet, as he has done several times in the past. I certainly don’t have a reason to stamp my feet, neither am I on a sabbatical from which I need to return.

But yes, I am a girl, and I loved SoulCalibur V too much... apparently, it makes some guys uncomfortable. :sc4amy1:
Well that’s not the only thing Nyte would stamp his feet over you for. He would also do it over the timeline theory, your comparisons between Groh and ZWEI, your opinions about “sexiness” in video games, and above all else, touching his most prized waifu, Natalie: The Mysterious Lesbian Barbarian. Basically, he’s had it out for you specifically and just began to attack you every second.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Nyte is ever going to recover from this beatdown he threw himself into anytime soon. The way he acted months back really made him shit the bed and gave him a bad reputation for his behaviour, to which has even extended to other sites.

Right, but it follows that to have a fair comparison, we should be speaking of a game where they both attended. Rock had his own niche in SoulCalibur IV in his throw game, while Mi-na had... really, nothing, to stack her up against Kilik. Before SoulCalibur VI, aside from SoulBlade, my favorite Mi-na was SoulCalibur III, as she had enough of a split from Kilik to stand out and she remained competitive, though that being said, we both know how awful the competitive scene is in that broken mess of a game, mechanically speaking. They wasted the good Mi-na then, and left her behind afterwards. It was infuriating. I would have loved to have been able to play Arcade Edition to enjoy her properly, though who knows if she got the nerf hammer there or they waited for SoulCalibur IV.
While I don’t really like Mina that much, I will at the very least concede that Mina is finally a good character to use, same with Raphael. Much like Raph, she’s been utterly terrible in every game up until SCVI. SC4 generally gave you no reason to really play Mina when Kilik covered everything she could do but offered more to work with. The tier gap between her and Kilik in 4 was so wide it was actually fucking disgusting to see how outclassed she was in that game.

Again, alongside Raphael, she was complete garbage in previous games and now in SC6 she’s a full on nightmare.

I would be lying if I said this would be the first time that I’ve joined a forum, inexplicably gotten under someone’s skin so much that they flew off the handle uncontrollably, and ultimately it led to their self-induced exile. I guess it’s somewhat of a curse, though I’m not sure exactly where the issue lies. I realize that I can be a bit obstinate and insistent about my beliefs, but I generally am able to explain my feelings if you’re willing to put in the effort to understand.

I could hazard a guess that the ones who explode are the ones who are just set to disagree with my position and aren’t willing to debate, as I have engaged in with several of you, mostly all pleasant experiences. But even then, when it becomes basically a personal hatred, then I think that’s past the point of no return where they mess things up so much where it becomes indefensible.

I’m not even against having a good rapport with Nyte, but he has to meet me halfway, or even a third of the way, if there is some sort of deep-seated issue with me or the way I’ve presented myself that led him to see me the way that he does. But still, I don’t really have problems with anyone here, so it is an isolated incident, so I’m really not sure what to think.

I just thought I’d air out my side of the equation, for whoever might care. :sc4amy1:

I disagree that Raphael has ever been as borderline unplayable as Mi-na at any stage of the game. I’ve played a good chunk of Raphael over the years, as I have so many of the other characters, and he’s always been about the mind games, making your opponent do something that you can counter and remaining diverse enough where you can remain unpredictable, or put another way, become really good at reading your opponent so that you can always put it right back in their face. He got a power boost in SoulCalibur VI, as pretty much everyone who isn’t Taki has, to be sure, but he was always workable. Now he’s just got a lot more going for him.

I never had a real issue with Nyte, but I never had any idea why he seemed to have such an issue with you. I mean, as it stands, I'm just glad we have a consistent community. I've said before there's no one I know personally outside of this community, so it is one of my favourite places 😅.

On the game front, I must wonder though, will Setsuka be dumbed down? Given how Haohmaru has been handled I could see that maybe she won't. Imo at least both Hilde and Haohmaru have actually been quite difficult to play effectively, so hopefully it will put down the arguments of Setsuka being "dumbed down" for newcomers. I'm really happy with how they have handled Haohmaru, given that really anyone can learn to play him, but someone really into playing him can learn the inputs for extra damage. I mean, I don't really mind whether Setsuka is "dumbed down" or not, as I at least managed to learn to play her somewhat passably in sciv and scv.

Also, how about a what if? Given that people say Rock sucks (or is at least less popular) how's about in his story, he is set up to be more of a protagonist? Or at least set up to be a bit of a badass? Assuming we get him in S3, if he were to become a major player in the story, how would everyone feel about that. Maybe after his axe breaking he brings in onslaught in some sort of triumphant way, and ends up uniting with the Kali-yuga trio or something?

I’m sure Setsuka will inherit some things from Alpha Patroklos like Xianghua lifted some things from Leixia, but her style is unique enough all on its own that it doesn’t need much fancy to get it going. They already gave us cherry blossom hit effects, and I’m sure her Critical Edge will feature them also, but I would love it if her Critical Edge was short and sweet like Alpha Patroklos’s was, though we know that’s practically impossible with how they’re treating them now.

I’m more concerned about what they might do to Hwang, personally. But that’s a little ways down the road...

I don’t feel like Rock ever will or perhaps even should be a key player. He’s basically the male equivalency for Talim, and she’s never been all that important to the plot, either, she’s just doing her wind thing like Rock is doing his Bangoo thing. They’re simple and pure beings that revel in their wholesomeness, and that never ought to need changing. He’s plenty badass as it is now, being able to hold Soul Edge up high and proud, not even slightly affected by its evil influences. I guess he just needs a sweet gameplay hook to get people interested in him, maybe something to do with animal spirits to tap into his Native American aesthetics.

I want Lizardman to return with his Axe and Shield style because it is truer to his origins, but I feel they may pick the discount kratos because "muh uniqueness".
He will have his sword and shield as well as his axe and shield but they will be bonus weapons to the dual axes. This is the best outcome as you only need his original weapons for story, plus the arms are there if you ever want to equip them.

How does the shield work with the dual axe style, though? You don’t really hack and slash with a shield.

Doesn't matter as we're not dealing with real weapons, plus when it comes to actual real world combat, the handle of a sword or the edge of a shield are deadly when used offensively, which were legitimately used in medieval warfare.

While Mina has never been "disliked"

Yeah... No. I dislike everything about her except her appearance.

Going to have to disagree with that. Raphael is quite decent in SCV, not even close to being as bad as Dampierre and Z.W.E.I.

The animations from a dual axe style would look out of place on a sword & shield or axe & shield style. Even if it's just a game, the developers need to make sure that the animations make sense otherwise more people will complain and not take the game seriously which isn't good for the game's image so it does actually matter.

It's not going to matter when the dual axes will be the default weapons. If Project Soul does take the distance into consideration, it will be no different that the voodoo trickery they already do with staple characters like Sophitia's launcher (66B I think), sword behaves like it's hilt has an elastic band attached.

Only if everyone uses the default weapons instead of other weapons, but that will never happen. If they give him different weapons, then they need to be of the same weapon type or else it won't make sense. Something like SCV Aeon's BBB being done by a completely different weapon type such as a shield would clash with everything else in the game and he would look like a modded character. A lot of people would notice it. Sophitia's 66B is different because the animation doesn't look out of place and you can't tell that the sword is floating in 60 or even 30 fps.

Oh for sure he’s been better than Mina in every game he’s been in with her, but what really gave Raphael a rather negative rep among competitive Calibur was his susceptibility to sidestepping, poor RO game most of his moveset being highs (just to name a few issues). Nearly none of his horizontals were that reliable for catching sidesteppers (and were somewhat sluggish) and given that almost every one of them were highs he would be frequently shut down. And to his credit though he did have a decent poke and punishment game alongside good reach and pretty solid throws. But outside of Raph’s comfort zone he was generally quite cumbersome to play compared to most of the others.

SCVI Raphael fixed most of his faults and he’s arguably the best he’s ever been in the series. He’s still somewhat vulnerable to sidestep but nowhere near as before. Though he’s arguably among the most difficult to play in the game as of now.

I don't mind a character being Top Tier if they (like SC6 Raphael and Ivy) are difficult to play and master. There must be a somewhat execution or skill barrier to access the rewards. That's fine by me.

Much better than a scrubby Mitsurugi or any scrubby character being Top Tier in previous entries.

That's pretty much what most fighting games do, the WGF vs EWGF is a prime example of this deliberate design. IIRC it goes further than this if the move whiffs. I've never looked into Tekken 7's frame data but I do feel the extra recovery frames if I whiff Kazuya's WGF/EWGF or Master Raven's forward, forward 3.

I’d honestly rather deal with Mitsurugi remaining near the top than someone like Seong Mi-na for the future of the game and the series as a whole.

Something I thought might be possible, maybe, to give Aeon some individuality from the sword-and-board folks, is he may use a sword/axe and shield as his primary weapon, and then in Soul Charge, go into a berserker mode, pull out a second sword/axe, and drop the shield. Then, when Soul Charge is done, he'd get his shield back, unless it was like a permanent buff like Mitsurugi's Shura Blade, for the rest of the round, he's got dual swords/axes.

I'm not sure if I mentioned here before, but I was wondering... If Rock comes before Aeon, does that preclude any chance of seeing the latter?
Not necessarily, it just means that an encounter versus Aeon would have to use the Lesser Lizardman style, unless the season three update and/or the actual Rock DLC itself patches the Lesser Lizardman style to be a more completed style and/or unlocks the style for use for custom characters. If Rock were to come first, then my prediction would change to a 50-50 split between Aeon and Li Long for the third veteran after Yun-seong. But it really depends on how it was handled when Rock was released.
