i like the critical finishes. they almost never happen and when they do, i feel like its deserved (at least on my end). the flashing red plays its own little mind game too... its the last round when your gauge starts flashing. your health is low but your opponent wants to stroke his e-peen by cf'ing you instead of just whittling your health the normal way. their attacks get slower, their original flow seems broken, and you have an opening to make a comeback. that happens fairly often it seems. i think its an alright element to the game.
i could also just enjoy really flashy shit though. that is a very strong possibility.

Fretting over an offensive element on a defensive system...

I don't get it.

i like CF and the fact that parry can heal yours and JI pretty much destroy theirs.

what i dont like is 2P maxi getting his pants knocked off after 3 low hits and fighting the next 3 or 4 rounds in tighty whities.

The single biggest downfall of Soul Calibur 4 is that the community doesn't complain enough.

The funny thing is...you're probably right. The forums have a lot of life when people are calling each other names and bitching and moaning...about this and that.

I like the new system, turtles are boring. It's a lot more fun when people are offensive, it makes it more fast paced. Have you ever seen videos of two turtles going at it towards the end of the SC2 days.... freakin lame. Look at Guilty Gear, that game is extremely offensively oriented, and it's AWESOME.

I also think that by rewarding aggression, it kinda covers up some of the character imbalances. I think its becoming pretty clear that this is one of the most balanced Soul Calibur's since SC1.

Definately agree.

I think it's downfall is the lack of character differentiation. Alot of the characters are similar. (That's why smash bros brawl was somewhat shit). Too many characters also borrow moves> Yoshi 44kb, mitsu 44kb. They only added 3 new characters this time around, and one of their weapons were FUCKING BUBBLES. SC3 had tira and zas, who are completely new. Amy is raphael. Hilde is kilik+ less/more cheap(less spam more ring outs)+FUCKIN COMBOS. Algol is a boss, so hes gone next game.(I know they said they wont make another unless the fans want more.)>>WANT MORE!
MORE CHARACTER, the zanier the better. (Cass/sop/hilde/mitsu/taki/ivy/kilik/sung mina(I like the wtfunblockable tho)/sieg/other etc. HAVE BORING PERSONALITIES) Zas is a beast, and YOSHI IF FUCKIN 'DICALUS (ridiculous)

Hmmm... i turtle pretty hard, if your gauge is taking a beating throw a parry in there. Or, GI more... easy enough.

Ok.... So everyone is basically the same? Well no shit sherlock. Thing is, they are all EXTREMELY DIFFERENT at the same time.

Mina is the Killik clone, not Hilde (Pole weapons, Hilde is a dual wielder).
Rock and Asta are clones (2H axe/mace weapons).
Yoshi and Mitsu are clones(Katana).
Lizzy, Soph and Cass are clones(Sword/Axe + Shield).
Raph and Amy are clones (Epee).
Sieg and Nmare are clones (Zweihander).
Yun and Xiang are clones (1H Sword).
Voldo, Talim and Taki are 'similar' (dual wield short weapons).
Apprentice, Yoda and Vader are clones (Light saber)

That leaves you with Algol, Cervy, Ivy, Setsuka, Tira, Zas.

And this is all by what you're saying - there's no variety.
if we make clones as 1 style, that's STILL 15 different styles.
And that doesn't even count the difference in how each clone style plays compared to each other.

If you think there is no character differentiation, go play Rock and tell me you can use him. Your list shows you play Asta. If they're so similar, then there should be no problem with you using Rock the same way you use Asta now is there?

And dude, you want crazy personalities? This is set in a time period where crazy gets you thrown in an asylum. Only reason Tira's allowed to roam free is that she's so often sucking on Nmare's proverbial Cawk that none of the authorities dare not touch her. If you want more personality, you think up one which works, has the characteristics to be someone who WOULD want to fight and works in a medieval time frame.

Actually, Kilik is the Mina clone. Whatever the case, complaining about non-uniqueness of a fighting game when there are only so many ways to hit someone is kind of dumb. That's like complaining that all the weapons in shooters fire the same bullets.

The single BIGGEST downfall of Soul Calibur 4.

I would complain about the generic weapons in shooters, though.

The difference here is that SC is an evolved game. When Soul Edge and SC1 were released it was completely standard for clones to be all over the place in a FG, especially a Namco game. Every other FG that's been around for a similar length of time has the same "issue." Only really newish games like GG and BB have avoided the clone characters, and even BB seems to be borrowing a whole lot from GG, and they had the luxury of being able to make up whatever the hell moves they wanted; SC being based around actual weapons means you're kind of limited to how people actually fought with actual weapons -- even with the exceptions.

Regardless, none of the clone characters actually play that similar.

The downfall is the online play. It was the easiest way to grow a community, and the developers blew it.

The exact opposite happened when Capcom made their recent SF games. I know 3D is harder to streamline, but let's face it... SF4 is nowhere as great of a game as SC4 is, and it's community is growing because of the better online play. At the end of day, I will host a SF4 tourney before I host a SC4 tourney because it's so much easier to find someone who plays the game.

The single BIGGEST downfall of Soul Calibur 4.

SF4 had a guaranteed fanbase of like 2.5 billion, though. And I've heard plenty of complaints about its online play. I'm sure it's better than SC4, but even so -- the idea of playing FG online is just wrong to me. And VF5 had much better online play (from what I've heard -- my experiences have been very mixed) and look at what happened to that game. I would also point out DOA4, which had a robust online community, and the netcode for that game was horrible. It being the only real online FG at the time obviously had something to do with the popularity, but still. Console FPS games are the same; the online play is generally terrible, but most people don't even notice (having had no real experience with good online play) or just don't care.

The last part is exactly the point. People don't care. And so long as people don't care, there is no need to do stuff for them... like MAKE A PATCH!

The single BIGGEST downfall of Soul Calibur 4.

Yes, but people don't care /= people don't play SC4 because the online is bad. THEY DON'T CARE.
