funimation is redistributing it.

http://www.animenation.com/gn-08355.html

still out of stock. Funimarion hasnt said anyhting about when they will start doing reprints well i actually havent searched for that info but seeing as how they have it now, they will definately cash in on it.

Normally i'd say torrent it but Pioneer has allways done a good job on thier anime so buy it definately.

I wonder if FUNimation will do S2 now that they have S1 rights, might use different VA's but meh who cares about english, dubs have allways been bad...

You were able to find a Shana boxed set? I've been looking all over but ever since geneon stopped US distribution I haven't found more than the occasional individual DVD.

Same here. mizuiro-kitsune, where in God's name did you find it? I've been looking all over for the Shana and the Fate/Stay Night box sets.

I got mine here:

http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/XMhDC7YuIzjXNkQxHE/browse/item/80556/4/0/0

It's a thin-pack cardboard Box set. Mine isn't by FUNimation though it says Geneon all over.

The 7th .hack//XXX game... .hack//GU Vol 3...

GU1 was good...
GU2 was kinda meh...
GU3... wow... I put it on Final Fantasy 6 and Tales of Phantasia level of greatness...

wow, i'm amazed anyone buys anime these days with the dawn of bittorent. I remember pirating it off morpheus back in the late 90s, and i had friends that used newsgroups. torrents make life sooo easy compared to the old days (okay, so ppl still use newsgroups). Then again i guess localization groups are bigger than ever and anime is now cheap compared to 10 years ago. I remember when 3 episodes of any given anime on vhs was $20+ for a legal copy (keep in mind i speak in 1998-200 USD). boxsets were upwards of $150

Thats why i put up with crappy pirated fan subs on vhs for all those years. it was sooo much cheaper.

Prices havent changed only thing that has is the medium instead of VHS were buying DVD's. Most box sets are 100-300 and single DVD's are 20-30, thinking about it now i suppose 29.95 for 3 episodes on VHS is pretty crazy now that we can pay the same price and get dual audio and extras plus in some cases dual video.

I bought all my anime when i first started collecting but back in 05 i discoverd boxtorrents and the wrold of fansubs so now i only buy the series i really like. Fansubs are really the only way to get some series too, never getting brought to USA for various reasons and being out of print in japan there is really only one way to get them then.

I dont like companies who localize anime because when you buy a DVD you have to pay extra because they decided to hire some shity voice actors to do the dubing process. Those companies would make more money if they skiped the dub and released good subs and sold the DVD's at a lower price. something like that wont ever happen though because there are stupid people who actually think dubs are better for some reason.

LOL, dual audio+sparse extras do not forgive such a high price.

because there are stupid people who actually think dubs are better for some reason.

Yeah, alot of people don't want to be reading when they're supposed to be watching something. Television isn't meant for watching: it's meant for background noise with a laugh-track so you can look up to see what was so funny.

Honestly, the reason people prefer dubs is because they don't want to have to read. I can understand in some cases...these people aren't all stupid, they're just not weeabuses.

I gladly accept retarded subs of Naruto over the English dub. I hope that voice actor dies, he's like Ash Ketchum only wearing Pikachu as a hairpiece.

Prices do change... Evangelion on VHS was $30 a tape, with only 2 episodes on it.

GOOD ANIME?
The Vision of Escaflowne TV
The Record of Lodoss War OVA
Legend of the Galactic Heroes TV
Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu
The Kind of the Stars Saga
Please Save My Earth the Movie
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann TV
Marmalade Boy TV
Hikaru no Go TV
RahXephon TV

It amazes me how people can like such shitty anime... Then I realise its because they haven't seen better. They have been introduced into anime by those hacks at Cartoon Network and because of it, have no culture for the great stuff. I've forgotten more good anime than people will probably see in their entire lifetime.

I like:
Jin-Roh, Macross Zero, Dai Mahou Touge.

Honorable mentions:
Perfect Blue, Initial D (season 4 was ), Macross Frontier, Excel Saga, Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, Millenium Actress, Lodoss, Love Hina, Appleseed, Blood the Last Vampire, Genocyber

Stuff that I don't like:
Macross 7, Wrath of the Ninja, Dragon Ball ___, Ghost in the Shell

The person who voices Naruto (in both subs and dubs) is a girl, actually. Er, hem...believe it.

I'd have to disagree with the hate of dubs, though. I've always thought people who watched subs exclusively were close-minded, and frankly, elitist. It was originally aired in Japan so we can only watch it in Japanese? Come on, now. That kind of thinking put George W. Bush in office. Don't get me wrong, I love watching subs, but given the choice, I would generally take the dubs.

I GENERALLY prefer subs over dubs, and I'll take JP voices if I can because usually (and I stress the word HARSHLY) the Japanese VAs portray the character closer to the original script better than the English VA (case and point, TIRA)

That's not to say, however, that all English VAs suck hard sweaty balls. I've seen good dubs, and I have a certain respect for English VAs who can do accurate (or even BETTER) portrayals of their Japanese counterparts. I thought the dubbing job on Persona 3 was AWESOME. Liam O'Brian as Akihiko actually sounded more natural to me than Hikaru Midorikawa. To be honest, I actually appreciate Yuri Lowenthal's voice as Sasuke because he actually MANAGES to sound like a 12-year old, unlike his angsty JP counterpart (besides which, I hate Naruto with a passion. I just play the Narutimate games because they are fun and make Temari cool =D).

But I digress; this isn't a thread about Dubs vs Subs, it's about anime. So here comes my highest recommendation:

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Clearly the most BIZARRE and HILARIOUS anime I've seen in ages since Excel Saga (it COMPETES for "Funniest Anime" with Excel, IMO). SZS follows the tale of Nozomu Itoshiki, a schoolteacher by trade and also the world's most negative man. One day while trying to hang himself, he is met by Fuura Kafuka, schoolgirl by trade and also the world's most positive girl. When she finds out that Itoshiki-sensei is her homeroom teacher, hijinks and mayhem with the rest of the bizarre and demented homeroom class ensue.

If you're a fan of Studio SHAFT-style comedy and dark humor, SZS is the way to go. Quirky, fast-paced humor and Japanese culture jokes strewn about the screen flying at you at light speed, sprinkled on top of Koji Kumeta's original morbid and twisted (without being sick) dark humor. I'm not surprised it has little mention, because it hasn't been localized yet. You might be able to find it on Youtube, or on Asian programming 'tube sites like http://www.crunchyroll.com/

I've been afraid to step into the Bleach pool just because of how popular it is, and that it'll break my heart and leave me unemployed with 3 kids the way Naruto did. Can anyone drop me a good summary of anything that makes Bleach different from your run-of-the-mill high-action shounen anime?

Hmm, I've never had to "look up" so i guess i dont really understand where the problem is. Maybe I just dont have to focus on the subs.

Hmm. . . I've seen a few of those oddly enough i dont think any of those series are different to Shana, So i dont quite see how its a shitty series.

My main problem is i get into a series and poor acting and conveying of emotions from english VA's kills the overall entertainment and quality of the dub. Armitage III Poly Matrix and Armitage III Dual Matrix dont count as dubs though, sometiems i think those two movies were done in English originally anyways.

EDIT: I dont think ive recomended any anime... I recomend everything i've seen but if i must name some...

Kiddy Grade.
Uta Kata.

Black Magic M66.
Gundam SEED/Destiny.
Gundam 00.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.
Green Green.
Rosario + Vampire.
Saikano.
Sakura Wars.
Noir.
Madlax.
El Cazador.
The Twelve Kingdoms.
Armitage III Poly and Dual Matrix.
Tsukihime.
Fate Stay/night.
Daphne in the Brilliant Blue.
Shion no Ou.
The Doughter of Twenty Faces.
Elfen Leid.
Paradise Kiss.
Lemon Angel Project.
Kurenai.

Kenpachi is the world's biggest badass. Period. Other than that, it's pretty typical. Bleach has always been my favorite anime, but lately it's been so boring. The anime randomly cuts into a filler arc smack-dab in the middle of another arc, and the manga has broken down into nothing more than a random series of fights. The thing that used to make Bleach cool was the cool fights juxtaposed with interesting back story and (somewhat) creative plots. Now, it seems like we just randomly have fights between a main character and an unoriginal villain who ends up getting killed. Maybe it would be more interesting if the villains didn't die?

There are a lot of English VAs I like. Crispin Freeman is amazing:

How come there's no anime sub form on 8wayrun.com?

BTW, to all the Shana fans: I just got past the engulfed love siblings ark......... Creepy.

I guess I'll throw out the anime I've really liked...

  • Cowboy Bebop (classic, the anime for people who don't even like anime)
  • RahXephon (music/mythology based plot + great mecha battles + even better characterization + amazing Studio Bones animation = win)
  • Fullmetal Alchemist (another character- and plot-driven anime with a unique premise to boot)
  • Samurai Champloo (same genius as Bebop but with feudal Japan and hip-hop)
  • Dennou Coil (interesting take on a cyberspace-obsessed future)
  • Gundam (considering how many series there are in Mobile Suit Gundam, there's bound to be at least one that you really like... personal favorite: 08th MS Team)
  • FLCL (Gainax's animation tour de force + the pillows. 'nuff said.)
  • Azumanga Daioh (still the best crack anime out there... or maybe I just like it because this is all we talked about that one summer in high school when everyone was taking world history...)

I liked Bleach as a manga a lot initially (bet you couldn't guess that from my avatar, hmmm?). It really was reminiscent of Yu Yu Hakusho (a series which I loved growing up) and it played around with shonen stereotypes and was just a fun series with some badass battles and monster designs. Then it got epic in the SS arc... Now? Not so much. Too many characters and a story I just can't get into right now. =/
