I remembered what Harada said that he was no longer a part of the team after Hoshino was put in charge, and has basically cut ties with Soulcalibur. Just now I heard the theory that Harada is diverting all funds and resources that could've been used on SC into Tekken. Do you guys think that's true?
 
I remember what composer Junichi Nakatsuru said to "look forward to the new themes in the future". If there were no plans for a new SC, I just don't think they would be doing anything with it. They've been using the property, just not in ways we want. Project Soul updated their website for the first time in forever last December, and are clearly still around. I find it hard to believe that Namco isn't doing anything at all with SC, and that Project Soul is getting paid to just sit on their asses all day doing nothing.

If it were announced that Project Soul was being shut down, then yeah, that would be official confirmation that the series is dead. But they haven't yet, so what are they doing? Gah, if only I could get direct confirmation from the source. I just want to know what the hell is going on over there.
 
I'm not sure what Namco is doing with their offline content, or better yet, their marketing system, because even Tekken 7 doesn't provide much offline content and has even worse gimmicky replacement characters.

Hopefully Namco takes a lesson from Netherrealm releasing both MKX and Injustice 2, because both games actually managed to succeed in offline content and in depth new characters. Some being inspired by veterans.

But then again, the East and the West have similar, yet different tastes.

That somehow happened, except the new characters weren't deep, just pale copies of veterans.

Also, I find it a pity that some games proudly announce 20 new characters while they removed 17 old ones. Some can disappear due to story reasons, but most of the time in NR games, half the roster disappears, and I don't think that would be good for any Soul game, due to how bad the new ones were received.

ok it's almost like i'm starting to notice some sarcasm but you are entitled to your own opinion and i respect it. I on the other hand feel that NRS actually proved that a fighting game can have a great and interesting story with some fun elements and modes. Before MK9, most fighting games i played included a story mode but felt more like a quick arcade mode with a slideshow or a small 30 - 60 sec cutscene that they thought of on their lunchbreaks at the end which is nice but you played it and you were done with it. (May have missed one that could be good and in that case i'm sorry) Then came MK9 and it actually made me go total 180 on what i thought of fighting game story modes. It wasn't perfect but it had a really good story and i actually felt like going back to it once in a while. And don't get me started on the Injustice series. Remember watching the first 10 minutes of Injustice 2 story on youtube and totally thought i was watching a real movie until the fighting segments came.

Summary:
It's your opinion and i respect it. I feel though that NRS actually proved that a fighting game can have a really good and interesting story mode.
 
I've always found with the NRS style story modes in games it's kind of off-putting to have the game lead you around the way it does. On the one hand it can be rewarding if it's a good story but on the other if it's like it was in SCV just no.

Really I don't think it can hold my attention, like I watched Max play Injustice 2 on youtube as the story in that was really good but I'd never of played it myself though that might change if the gameplay itself were good enough (I can't stand NRS games really) but even in the case of Marvel Infinite which looks better and better gameplay wise in my opinion the story mode just looks tacky.

In all honesty I think I prefer the old arcade mode style story where you pick a character and play out their story in a more abstract way. Ironically I look back on SCIV and think the story mode in that was quite innovative for it's time although at the time I didn't have much good to say about it because really the heart of the fighting game is it's multiplayer honestly. The story mode might still be essential for getting players into that place where they want to play against their friends though.
 
dime is right tbh.
No one gets into fighting games for the story anyway. The thing that makes people wanna buy it are cool characters and sick looking gameplay. All you need for that is a good trailer.

Didn't really turn out so great for SC5 or SF 5 with that. Sure, we the people who are a little more competetive love these games and so did the casuals as well but not as long as we did. I'm not saying a story mode is the answer here but it's at least on of them. More offline content to keep them (as well as the casual player in me) satisfied and to make them stop giving games undeserved 1/10 on meta just because their fave character or mode is missing.
 
Story mode doesn't offer much replay value in fighting games anyway, though SC3 might be a bit of an exception (and Injustice 2 tried adding that to some degree).

For me personally, I'd rather get into the gameplay. I'll just read a book or watch a movie if I want a good story, instead of playing a fighting game. That simple tbh.

For me, story is not as important but a good bonus. Besides, if there's a good story worth watching, I'll just go on Youtube whether it be game or movie. I tend to prioritize on game mechanics more than anything else.
 
Honestly, whether there is a story or not, Soul Calibur needs to provide an ample amount of offline presentation, and this series has no excuse given the modes they provided in the past, like Edge Master Mode. Tekken, too.

Not because of my own personal discretions (I hate douchebags, or better yet, people, and online is filled with them), but because they need to draw attention to both casual and tournament audiences at this point. Mind you, Soulcalibur fans are wondering if they even care about this series anymore.

They clearly had potential to improve from SCV, but they were too weak, especially in Odashima's case, to put their foot down.
