Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Even if Raphael doesn't make SoulCalibur VI, for the sake of argument, that doesn't rule him out of SoulCalibur VII, you know. The assumption, for me at least, is that the next game would pick up where this one leaves off, and Raphael can always enter the story later in the timeline, like some others that won't make it into this story, such as Setsuka and Hilde. They can get their development with all new stories in the next game along with new supporting cast members as well. I figure that SoulCalibur VI is but the framework for a new beginning.

We would have to wait 6 years for that, assuming SCVII would even be guaranteed at all. One would think they know better than to piss off fans after seeing their reactions to SCV, they can't afford to make risky decisions like that. If this game will only cover the events of SCI, then I'm not going to consider this a reboot of the series, but a remake of the first game. In that case, any character that is included from SCII onwards besides Zasalamel (since he is immortal and is reborn in every age), has no reason to be in the game. There is no way Talim and Tira won't make it in the game so the only excuse is popularity. Raphael placed #19 in the Facebook poll, higher than Maxi, Hwang, Astaroth, Lizardman/Aeon and Rock. But Maxi has already been revealed and Astaroth and Lizardman are likely to return based on the screenshots. They can easily give Raphael an important role in the story, he and other characters joining the series later should NOT be a barrier that prevents them from being in the game since they did away with the original ages and timeline. Talim and Tira are not going to be 10 years old in this game, that's ridiculous. There is absolutely no excuse for not including Raphael.

I'm not totally sold on the "appears in story art = playable" line of thought.

I kinda agree in a sens, that i'm still not sure about Lizardman, cause i just can't see him being in over Raph for example. But for Cervantes he's guarantee even without the story trailer, that trailer just added a new more confirmation.

Y'all just be a little bit more patient. We got a release date and a shit load of info. I swear some of y'all are like hungry hungry hippos for information about the game.

Anyways, I really like the direction the game is going in.

Ivy's CS

I really do want a CaS trailer and a look at the main menu to know if it's changed since we last saw it.

goodness that damage. holy

I would compromise and say that appearing in storymode art lends credibility as a playable character, but I won't agree that it confirms it.

Nah, I bet Kilik has a Halberd weapon.

I've always felt bad for Raphael being trash in each game. If he is SCVI, Raphael would be non - viable as always.

Okay, I tried to become a super duper detective person. So, we've got this with a bunch of blurred names:
00-timeline.jpg

If you mess with the contrast, you can clearly see the length of the blurred character names:
00-timeline-contrast.png

Now then, to me it looks like they scribbled some gibberish over the character names and then blurred it. There's the chance they scribbled beyond the character names or maybe those character names were completely bogus to begin with. But in case the length of the blurred names is accurate, I decided to do some super high-tech detective work.

It seemed possible to make a texture font based on the timeline and story mode screenshots, and the game doesn't seem to render the text with kerning, so I whipped this up (the placeholder symbols are based on a font from another SC game):

And so I tried to line up various character names to see if they would fit:

And this is the best guess I ended up with (the names line up well, but the story start point wouldn't make too much sense for a few of these):

The timelines might give some hints as to who these characters are. For instance, the fourth blurred name is someone who seems to be working alongside (or fighting against) Nightmare since their timelines are mostly the same.

If anyone else wants to fiddle with this, here are the character names I produced with the SC6-esque font: https://8wayrun.com/attachments/text-zip.49417/?hash=09e74a291eb46e6711a33a6e40de8509

ESRB rating is up and it's an interesting read:

Rating Summary: This is a fighting game in which players engage in one-on-one combat with a large cast of supernatural and human characters. Characters punch, kick, and throw each other to drain opponents' life meters. Several characters use swords, spears, pistols, axes, and nunchucks while fighting. Finishing moves and special attacks are often depicted with brief slow-motion effects; combat is highlighted by cries of pain and impact sounds. One cutscene, rendered in a painting-like art style, depicts a character sitting in a pool of blood. Several female characters wear skimpy, low-cut costumes that display large amounts of cleavage; one female character is stylized to appear nude, though no discernible details are seen (i.e., no nipples; crotch region flat). The words “a*s” and “bastard” appear in the dialogue.

This is really interesting. Spear and Axe seems to confirm Astaroth (already kinda confirmed in story trailer) and Hilde (or possible a new spear user I guess).

The 'female character who appears nude' sounds really odd :S Kinda reminds me of the girl in Sia's videos wearing the skin-coloured leotard, lol. It has to be a new character right? Unless Tira's gone full psycho and running around nude these days, lol.

I really hope they at least reveal the 3 DLC characters and Pre-Order character soon because whilst I DO intend on pre-ordering either way, I would like to know exactly who I'm getting first.

The second one looks more like a two word name with a dash in the middle to me if anything at all

You...you do realize that it makes no sense right? I'm not even going to talk about being able to see through the blur because that's absurd, I can't see a damn thing, but the names you have pasted there don't match the events what so ever, also no newcomers? it's starting to be a theme around here, Okubo basically confirmed that we'll have more new characters in the interviews.

We've already seen different versions of that screen with the dots correlating to the events/dates in different places. Because of that, I think it's safe to say they aren't finalized and reading too much into the dots actually meaning anything is a fool's errand at this point. They don't even really make much sense for the characters that aren't blurred.

The same could be said for the blurred names themselves, we really have no way of knowing that they didn't replace the real character names with placeholder/garbage text and then blurred it. It seems a little more likely to me that they didn't bother to do that and they blurred real names of unannounced characters. If that's the case, I think Sectus basically did the best job they could and it was just a bit of fun speculation. I wouldn't be surprised if they're right.

Still, I think a lot of y'all are reading WAY too much into that screen. I know it's enticing with the blurred names and the event dates... that's exactly what those screenshots are meant to do, get people excited about the story mode. It's not necessarily meant to indicate what's going to be in the final game. Stuff gets cut and changed from games too often to expect it to be anything definitive.

Not to mention the fact that it's entirely possible that's not even the entire screen, it could scroll down further with more characters, or have different pages...

Developers have purposefully teased un-revealed characters/content for many games many times (ie, Okubo teasing Talim on twitter, or a billion different games teasing upcoming characters using silhouettes), and sometimes developers think they do a good job obscuring something but they fail at it (I remember David Jaffe tried to blur out parts of an email about God of War 3 many years ago, but fans were able to decipher the entire email very quickly).

It's possible the text underneath the blur is indeed gibberish and it's impossible to gain anything from this, but it's also possible they took a real screenshot of the story mode, did some very quick scribbles, and then blurred it. I know the former is very possible, but I thought this would be a fun experiment in case it could lead to something.

ESRB gets sent a video of what the developer deems the most "offensive" content in the game, so the "nude figure" could be from any part of the game. Could be a brief part of a story sequence (maybe an angel-like figure with no clothing?), or it could be the female CAS body model shown without any clothing on (though I don't know why the game would ever show that).

Edit: Thinking about it, the "nude" character they're referring to could easily be Taki. Her outfit might as well be bodypaint.
