Mi-na Matchup Discussion

I suppose I could GI more. I was doing it for a while and it worked alright. But fuck me, franman is retarded with his iGDRs.

Granted, I wasn't playing great, and we were just fucking around. But godamn Cervy. I'd rather play against Amy right now.

I saw your vids page, I thought you played pretty decently imo.

Step more.

His jumping kick (can't rememeber the command i think it's bK or something) gives adv on block, so you can probably try something defensive like 4A or 7K post block.

His BT stab thing gives adv on block i think

You can only punish his 1K with FC A, so take your adv with that :)

6K(CH) -> A+B is combo, use 6AK for NH

Your game needs more mids basically. I recommend using 1B a SHITLOAD (JUST the 1B). 9K as well, which is TJ fast, and safe. Makes a good autoGI setup as well. For lows, you should use 2K and 2A WAY more often than u do now. 2K is not just a low, it's one of her fastest moves, in other words interrupt. It's also not unwise to gamble 66K shit from time to time as the reward and range is good. Finally...a lil more patience helps vs Cervy cuz, he severely punishes mistakes.

You were being GId a lot. Mix your fast highs with fast lows. I think you used K only once and that's Mina's fastest attack. Cervy is average speed.

Ugh, that's just it; I couldn't figure out what to punish, or which way to step. Spman told me that I need to step left, crouch less, and GI more, so I'll work on that.

And franman likes to use a lot of kicks, which is annoying. That, and he whores those frame traps, which I still fall for because I don't always recognize them yet.

I know about CH 6K, A+B (I usually used 8A+B), but I'm having trouble confirming the CH for whatever reason. I'll work on that.

I do want to use FC2A more. I've been ignoring it, but when I'm put into a forced crouch or block a low it seems like its actually useful. OOF suggested it after one of his Vader setups that was giving me trouble (blocked 2[A+B], I think), and it helped.

Thanks for the suggestions. We'll see how it goes next time I can get some games with franman.

Protip: Cervy's bK (The long ranged straight jump kick) is neutral on block, so see what he does after that and react accordingly later. Cervy's 1K is punishable by WS K (You should've gotten it around the start of the first vid, but you just weren't fast enough). Also, Cervy's aB is - on NH (I'm pretty sure it's - on CH, too), so take advantage of that. Franman's punishment wasn't quite on point either (Yay for ignorance), so you got off with a few blocked 4KBs and 8A+Bs. You might wanna go through his movelist and frame data if you haven't already, so that you know a bit more on what you can punish, and what you should watch out for.

Cervy is really easy to step up close, and he can only kill your step effectively if he wants to take a risk.

if you have space, you can avoid any 1K or bK mixups with 4A.

BT B+K is -3(ish)... some cervys i've seen do 3B or an aB right after BT B+K... a 4B+K can stuff this easily.

if you can bait an iGDR at range, a well-timed backstep will leave Cervy right in front of you with anything you want as a punish.

don't duck... if cervy ducks in front of you (or recovers crouching from 2A, 1K, 11K, etc.) get ready to either block & punish, or break B.

note: it's really disadvantageous for mi-na to do high strings against Cervy, because WS A will pwn you.

Another thing Page - Cervantes has some moves which are pretty unsafe if blocked. His aB is punishable by 6B+K. I can't remember if he was using anything else that was that was unsafe in the video, maybe he wasn't. But I know for sure that aB is.
2A+B can be punished by Mina's FC 2A since 2A+B forces her on crouch on guard.

At max range you should be able to do FC1B without too much worry of 22B. I'd be more worried about 3A+G, actually, though I don't know if that would work, either. You can also stay back and let them make the first moves. You can punish 1A with FC1B and 22B with either that or 66B if you're close enough.

I usually try and stay at mid range and work the soul gauge, since it seems like he has some trouble punishing from there.

I don't know. Seems like another character like Raph, where people say he's a bad matchup for Mina but I've never had too much of a problem.

FC1B is extremely linear, I'm pretty sure that if he steps he can 236B because FC 1B is horrible on whiff. Proper application of 44_66A+B when he's not in a position to step it can work wonders. Just be careful with things like 2A+B that are slow enough for him to see and react to, because he can reach you in situations where most other characters can't. I think the thing that makes him troublesome is that he can transition well between long-short range and once he is in long range he's easily better than Mina.

Something amusing (But not for people who main only Mi-na): Hilde can step in between the two hits of her AA. Prolly not practical, but I find it funny that she can do that.

@Khent: If you win the right tourney, you could prolly pay a prostitute with the prize money to roleplay that for ya.

Anyway, I use Kilik and Cervy too, because they're both pretty damn fun for me. I mess with a lot of characters, though, and it took me a while to settle on my mains.

I use Rock, too, but it's pretty much split down the middle. Whoever I'm feeling better with that day, or if Rock has a terrible matchup (or visa versa).

Anyways, tourney this Saturday. And there will be sticks! Finally! Going to try and land her UB.

In the past I'd have some angry and rage-filled reply to now knowing this fact, but it just gets to the point where you totally give up and accept that she is flawed beyond belief. I can't even comment on it.

A little off-topic here, but Dully's statement has me asking the question - who else here aside from me uses only Mi-na? I'm looking to see what other courageous people are out there besides me. I mean, if I managed to win a tournament with her, I wouldn't even want the prize money. All I'd really want is for Mi-na to jump out of the TV from her win pose and say to me "Sean, you and me are now going to have hot, passionate sex."
It's been like this since SC3.

It's designed into the move. If people duck or step the second hit, do the first hit, then do something else. Like backstep or guard if you know they're going to try go for a punisher. In some ways this can add layers of mind game in your favour.

Of course, this is only useful information if your opponent knows they can duck or step the second hit.

I started off with Mi-Na, went to Tira, then to Taki, then to Talim, and back to Mi-Na. I feel most natural using Mi-Na, and I'm almost always consistent with her. I also feel a good bit of pride when I soundly beat people who say she sucks constantly. She's flawed...moreso than most characters, but she has what she needs to win. Application of her tools is a big factor, as well as adaptation mid-match.

I post my reply with a bit of shame here.

I used to main Mina and only Mina, in SC1 and 3, sharing with Talim in SC2, because Talim was that funny to play, before.

In SC4, however, I grew so frustrated with some matchups and the nerfing, that I did try different characters, going through Talim and Tira, without better results. Then I resorted to Kilik and Amy, and while I DO win matches with them....it's just not the same (I even rant in a low voice how "stupid it is to need to change characters only to win some matches"). Now I try and play Mina as good as I can, picking Amy if I lose too much, so as not to end up hating the game.

Note that when I say "maining Mina" I refer to choosing Mina every time I'm playing a "serious" match. (since I can't play in tournaments nor have the level to do it). I do play other characters when I face casual opponents or the AI. If I got the definition of "main" wrong, forget this post. =P

I think it's funny that the Mina forum is the most pornographic, yet Mina is like, the least sluttiest character.

Hilde's less of a whore.... but yeah, my personal theory is that us Mi-na users have something wrong in the head that makes us stick with her at this point.... It could just be me that's wrong in the head, of course.

the only people who say mi-na is a weak character are the ones who try to play her like the other chars. mi-na is the exception in this game

Mina people aren't the only ones who are very loyal... look at the people who stuck with Talim through all the nerfing she copped between SC2 and SC3.

I honestly can't blame anyone for wanting to have backups though. You guys are smart for that. I'm too stubborn and thick headed..

You don't need one honestly.

You just need to place a lotta emphasis on basics. Experience will fill in the rest. She has to work a lot harder no doubt, but she can win...vs EVERYONE if you understand/know her well enough. Nothing wrong with being a Mina purist ;)
