What if they give brown hair....with blond highlights?!
I'd also like to throw in my previous dumb idea of her getting a different hair color in every new appearance she makes. In this one, she'll be a red head. In SCVII, she will have white hair. And in VIII, jet black. Once she has mastery over this new power, her soul charge will make it rainbow. Bwahaha!
Yeah, personally, I think too much is made of hair colour. Maybe in another game which didn't have the kind of racial inclusion that Soulcalibur has--much as it can feel one-dimensional in certain respects--I would be more concerned about the implications. But considering that and also that A) Setsuka's background story implying a vague (we know she's "not Japanese", though I don't know that we know for sure that she is of European descent, as is often suggested), and B) the long tradition of variation in designs for the series (including hair colour changes), I think the blonde alt works well enough, even if you are one likes the designs to fit closer to continuity. On that last point, personally I could care less, though I guess I do prefer more practical and closer to historically accurate designs--or, you know as close to it as this franchise ever gets, which you could argue is not terribly close.
Of course, for some who aren't fans of the blonde hair, it may be closer to an abstract aesthetic call (or at least occur to them in that fashion) and how can you argue with that--that is, a matter of taste? But in that respect I'm happy to see variations in colour schemes all around. But then, I also tend to think that far too much gets made of default custumes and 2Ps in this franchise: even in forums like this one that cater to a relatively more "hardcore" part of the fanbase, there is just much more micro-analysis of the designs than I would expect. I mean, on the one hand it is sort of nice to see people appreciating part of the art design of the game, but on another, it genuinely surprises me just how much time is spent discussing this minutia (as opposed to movesets, mechanics, and major features). Maybe partly that's a product of us never knowing anything about what is coming in this game until the last minute (a marketing strategy of PS that has come in for some reasonable criticism of late), and people ending up discussing the superficial details of new characters more so than they otherwise should, but it still surprises me how much importance people place on this character model or that piece of equipment.
It's not that I care zero about all of that (obviously, from the mocking I devote to the recent emo and wizard characters), but it's honestly a far distant interest to me, relative to mechanics, frame data, and the nuts and bolts of the movesets generally. And relative to the nitpicking that I bring to bear on those areas, I'm pretty non-nonplussed by most designs (that don't look like Gerard Way!): give them whatever hair you can imagine--can it really look weirder than a robin-hood / ninja / wooden cyborg / magical demon spirit?
@FluffyQuack I did notice your further commentary and investigation into the netcode / lag puzzle. I still substantially agree, but with the same caveats as to how certain we can realistically be. You'll have to forgive a delay in a more substantive response: I only had a little bit of time to post this evening and I just spent it all talking about virtual doll hair. ;)
