DLC Theory: Stone *is* Rock

Stone could be Rock but it could also be a red herring since developers are beginning to catch on that people like to datamine things.

Yell = hilde until Monday and we see the codename are gone in season 2 datamine
How does that equate?

Dude, the codenames are meaningless. There's four characters, not six, and nothing to indicate Hilde and Haohmaru. I still believe the last one is a newcomer (no, not the female barbarian so don't even try that shit) mainly because of how Okubo reacted when asked about it by Kayane. It was the same reaction to when asked about a female newcomer in 2018, which he called "tricky"... of course, it was 2B.

As I said, they were likely leftovers from the development process when they were going through everything. We weren't meant to see them, so it's not like they were trying to foreshadow anything.

I don't think this works, because it wasn't in the base game, and didn't come until the update of 2B, and then, they never removed it. If it was a mistake, and wasn't meant to be there, you'd think that once discovered, which they are absolutely aware that they were discovered, they'd patch it out.

Indeed, we will get some more insight on the six names when the season 2 patch drops, because they will either be removed, replaced, or still exist.

Tons of stuff gets dummied out during development. This is hardly the first example.

They probably were planning out S2 for a while, and went through all possibilities. That was just leftover stuff that's mostly meaningless outside of giving us a hint that S2 was coming.

Also, this is the interview I was referring to:
Kayane : Thank you Okubo-san and Takahashi-san for your time ! As usual, I have some tricky questions to ask you ! I’m sure you didn’t miss them ! 🙂
Can you tell me more about the Season Pass 2 and what it will include ?
Motohiro Okubo : Season Pass n°2 includes four characters and four character creation parts, so it’s going to be a total of 8 DLCs.
Kayane : I understand better ! Four characters and one is Haohmaru from Samurai Shodown !
M.O. : Haohmaru, yes.
K. : And three legacy characters.
M.O. : Maybe ?
K. : Or maybe a new one ?
M.O. : long pause, hesitant You’ll see ! Please wait !
Now, why would he have a long pause and be all hesitant at the question if a newcomer wasn't a possibility? If it was all legacies, they probably would've made it clear right away, like how Tekken 7 did it. Furthermore, even the context leaves no confusion as to whether Haohmaru is in the equation.
  • Four characters and four CAS packs.
  • When Kayane asks if it's four characters, with one being Haohmaru from SS, and the other three being legacies, he doesn't give a yes or any variation of that. He gives a "maybe". As in, trying to avoid giving a definitive answer.
  • Then, when Kayane asks if one is new, and he makes long pause, not sure how he should go about answering the question. Then he just tells her to wait and see.
See, it's not Haohmaru, because he was already known and out of the equation in that question and thus it cannot be confused.

Furthermore, here's the interview from 2018 that foreshadowed 2B in the game, which was also with Kayane and in a very similar scenario.
K. : I see smiles Will there be a new female character ?

silence

I hope so !

M.O. : That’s a pretty tricky question !

Also, for comparison, look how easily he answered questions regarding the then-recently announced Azwel.
K. : We have seen a new character with this new Story Mode. Some kind of wizard with a rope. Can you say more about him ?

M.O. : Oh ? Did you see him ? Really ? laughs Well, he’s an important character in the Story Mode we just announced. He has a purpose to save the world… But that’s all I can say.

K. : Wait, so he’s a good guy ?

M.O. : silence and laughter

K. : Will he be playable ?

M.O. : Yes, indeed.

K : Oh, will he ? So he’s actually a new character !

M.O. : silence and laughter
See, Okubo can easily answer questions when nothing seems at risk. He noticeably hesitates when thrown a curveball, and has to maneuver around it. That curveball in 2019 ended up being the prospect of a completely new character. Again, if there was no plans from one, I'm sure he could've easily answered that.

That's why I think there's a good chance we'll get a newcomer. There's all sorts of cool concepts I'd like to see in Soulcalibur, and no, I don't give a shit about a female barbarian. If it's Yun-seong or Hwang? Cool. If it's newcomer? Also cool, I like new stuff.

So yeah, that's my theory that they'll end S2 with, someone brand new that will send waves through the community. That's my opinion, and until I have a legitimate reason to think otherwise, I'll be maintaining it.

Salia seems too... generic, based on her appearance. Nothing about her pops out to me, unless they heavily reinvent her.
Speaking of her appearance, I don't think we've ever even seen a proper full pic of her in color (not counting that little portrait in Libra). We either get black and white sketches/illustrations or the tiny Libra pic in terms of our ability to perceive her visually.

I really hope if she's included she'll use a one-handed European-style sword; something Geralt-like but that could endure in the roster instead of just being a guest character. I think her appearance could be made more striking or unique to match the aesthetic the rest of the cast is designed in. However, I think the trick for her will be differentiating her from Hilde and Siegfried; they're all armored Germans. :P In that regard, she's definitely too generic.

Also, I think SC favors making brand new characters. Yes, there were some ascended extras, like Cassandra and Amy, and of course Patroklos and Pyrrha in SCV, but most of them were made as being brand new and never seen before. I believe that would remain true here.

You think a newcomer would outsell Yun-Seong or Setsuka? Because if you had your way one of them would not be in Season 2 or even SoulCalibur 6 period if this is the last season.

A truly horrible thought

Setsuka is a lock for #3, so I'm not worried about her, and yes, I do think a newcomer would outsell many of veterans we have left outside of that. I even made the comparison before that a sexy, half-dressed new female character would be more appealing to the wide audience than characters like Lizardman, Yun-seong, Li Long, Hwang, and (gasp) Rock. That's just how it is. As I said before, DLC characters have to sell on their own merits, and seeing something legitimately new would be instantly appealing if handled correctly.

Also, some people act like newcomers can't be DLC, to which I point to DOA5, SFV, T7, GGXrD, and probably more. There's no "rule" whatsoever, and the sooner people stop acting like it, the better.

And don't give me that "They don't have enough resources of it", considering Season 2 is bigger and better than Season 1 -- four CAS packs over two, five new stages, a completely revamped gameplay system, an overhaul of the game itself, and a quicker release schedule as a whole. That would've held if it were like Season 1, but Season 2 clearly has more resources, so they can easily build a newcomer from scratch. So that's my bet, there's the interview supporting it, and the fact that after Setsuka, most of the other veterans just don't scream DLC to me. I mean, we had an all-girl pack in S1, and the first character of S2 is another female... I think they know a "waifu" will sell.

That is all.

I think we will have room for a newcomer once we get a few more characters back. I would genuinely like to see a new fighter in SCVI beyond Grøh and Azwel, but my personal suspicion is that pre-existing roster members will get seniority, in terms of being introduced into SCVI.
If we make it to a season 3, I'm hopeful we could get a newcomer that way.

Why do you think that?

As I said, "seniority" doesn't mean jack shit because most of them aren't marketable as DLC. I can't see them closing out on freaking Rock (cue the hate comments). What do you think of that post regarding the interview above? Seems kinda suspicious.

Please tell me how Yun-Seong is not marketable as DLC.

Because the predominantly male fanbase is straight and prefers tiddies, to put it one way.
