Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

I wanted to ask what you guys think of a new gameplay aspect. I wasn't paying much attention to it before, but now I've looked at the gameplay again I've realized that the characters with explicit magical elements make much more use of it than in past games. For example, characters that didn't use magic during that actual fighting in the past do, and those who did use it even more prominently.

This includes:
  • Kilik entered a possessed state during his Soul Charge, which is different from the others. In the past, the Evil Seed was a lore element that had no impact on gameplay.
  • Zasalamel using dark sorcery to create vortexes and black holes, and control time.
  • Yoshimitsu (who had some magic before) has a magical trait of draining some health from his opponent by taking their life force after a combo, and his CE has him literally ripping out their soul and crushing it.
  • Nightmare summons a demonic horse during is CE, as opposed to just slashing them.
  • Taki had some magic moves, but it now it's use far more in tandem with her fighting with teleportation, bombs, and blasts showing up much more. Her CE has her using a demon seal to hold them in place.
  • Ivy also uses magic far more than just having a unique weapon. One of her moves involves her summoning a mystic bow and arrow to strike her airborne opponent, and another has her using magical discs.
  • Groh has various stages where magic becomes more prominent depending on how much he's using.
  • Geralt of course mixes swordsmanship with sorcery just as much as his home game.
Overall, I like it. Magic always existed but was treated as an afterthought in past games. I think characters who are supposed to be sorcerers or have inherent magical power should actually use them to fight. It also helps separate them from the ones who don't use magic at all, like Mitsurugi, Xianghua, Maxi and Siegfried.

While I'm sure this bothers some who complain about things being "too fantasy" or "keep magic out" among other things, as has been stated, I feel that Z.W.E.I. and Viola's addition in SCV, and even Algol in SCIV, pointed towards this being something to expect eventually. Personally, I enjoy what I see of it and would like to see this continue. It adds to the characters and gameplay, and it seems like a natural progression for the series to take, especially with it having been in the lore in the first place.

It's also worth appreciating that it seems like it may be doing a good job at attracting the attention of newcomers more than it might otherwise be able to get. I'd say that's definitely a good thing for the series we all love.

Some spectacular finish at the 3 minute mark from Signia in SC mode! Again @ 7:50.

Looks like a fun game! Really hope to see this in ESports with more players from Asia participating...

Guys , I wonder something :

-> we haven’t seen the 2P of the characters yet.
+
-> That strange center slot still bother me , it doesn’t seems like the others , and it is placed at the center of a kind of tree.

= what if , the center slot is a new option , where you can choose a second version of each character ( influenced by Soul edge or soul calibur) with a new look ( the 2P) , and some new moves etc ..
(Or it could be just the CaS slot).

Remember that an older leak from @Vergeben , told that Project Soul intended to give each character differents movesets , like the new Mortal kombat.

What are you thoughts ??

Makes me wonder how Talim's going to play when she's revealed. I bet she'll be able to summon cyclones and use more air-based attacks. I really hope Raphael makes it in, base or DLC. I bet he'll get some new vampiric abilities.

Plenty of interesting things they could do with that. Assuming she actually is back, it would be for the best if her use of wind magic or whatever the deal with that actually ends up being, is actually made apparent. I'm neutral to her as a character, but the style itself was fun. The constant talk of wind without any prevalent display seemed ultimately rather pointless.

As far as other characters of interest go to me: Raphael, Amy, Voldo, Tira, Viola, Cervantes, and possibly a few others I could be forgetting, all have quite a bit of potential for what they could do with them. I would say Z.W.E.I., but there's a strong chance he and Groh are the same person, and I can't help but prefer they take a step back with him and his style to actually iron it out. I stand by the sentiment that the game looks well balanced for the most part so far, and I just hope we don't have a situation of anyone being borderline useless after a while like Z.W.E.I. was, or absurdly overpowered[apply this to your character of choosing].

Wait, is Groh = Z.W.E.I. a common theory that I'm only now hearing about? What connects them?
Their backstories, from what little we know of both, seem to match up, taking the information from New Legends of Project Soul, Z.W.E.I. was a man raised in a monastery (Aval Organization could be described as such) who broke free and joined a band of thieves before being caught by Graf Dumas (presumably the original, not the one who Raphael was portraying himself as while being a host for Inferno) and put to death, and upon "dying", the wolf spirit E.I.N. awoke from inside him and stopped him from dying, from which point, he became Z.W.E.I. -- what his name was before he was called Z.W.E.I. is an unknown. Z.W.E.I.'s three-hilted sword was forged for him by a blacksmith on a bet that he couldn't wield it effectively, and it's possible that he couldn't, not before obtaining E.I.N. -- and Z.W.E.I. could be a reference to his past where he wielded a twinblade / two swords, as "zwei" is German for "two". "Ein" is German for "one", and so combined, they make three, which would give him a higher sense ability to be able to use the three-hilted sword. Beyond that, they have a similar enough fashion sense and color scheme, which wouldn't mean anything in and of itself, but with the other details, can just be one more piece of the puzzle. There's also the fringe thought that the "ø" Grøh could also be read as a zero, as in zero -> one -> two. It could be nonsense, but it's not impossible a theory. Bonus points if his father is Graf Dumas.

I don't know if there's anything to it, or if it could happen. I don't know about other people, but my reasoning is a mix of the color scheme, the way some of the animations look like they could be fairly similar to or modified based on some of his, and while it would toss out Z.W.E.I.'s original part in the story or modify it on some levels, I could see it happening and maybe being fit into a new backstory for him somehow, perhaps based on his old one. Can't recall who or how long ago, but I know someone in this thread brought up how his backstory didn't really explain much, but some of it could be used to connect them if the devs wanted to go that route of having Groh become Z.W.E.I.

That's quite a big reason to love her

That "dinky" sword are there to differentiate her from Kilik and Mi-Na and gives her some short ranged quick attacks which I think is quite useful . And that doesn't make her less of a spear user because you know she does wield the spear.
Don't get me wrong though I respect your opinion because not everyone has to like every character, and I am aware that she's quite an unorthodox character but that doesn't make her style useless or half baked.
The problem is, if she is the only representative spear user in the game, and you love the spear and it's historical use and you love CaS she is absolutely terrible a representative as her weird lance spear with a flag attached and dinky sword all being used in a weird way makes making any character who uses a spear absurd 98% of the time.

Speaking as a person who honors and respects the spear for it's historical significance and helping us make the shift from beast to man, an then staying strong and true up until modern day, never truly being sidelined by any other weapon, I find Hilde an unacceptable representative of the spear. As a third spear user after a two handed, and a spear and shield, then sure go weird, but as the only one?

I mean imagine if the only sword wielder was Groh, would you feel the sword was adequately represented? No of course not. But the sword has multiple two handed, one handed, and sword and shield styles before a truly bizarre one.

All I'd like is for the spear to be given some respect before the goofy weird crap. is included. That's my problem with Hilde. She can't be used to CaS anything really, not even a spear user.

Addendum: No an even better representation than Groh since I think Hilde's style is really that weird compared to actual spear use. Imagine if Yoshimitsu was the only representative sword user.

Well, that clarifies that point of view in detail. Thank you. Frankly, I agree, could just as easily be a pointless and nonsensical far reach. But hey, could happen. Could not. Makes little difference in the end, and lore speculations are always fun.

Talim should gain range similar to how Asuma from naruto could add range. Since Yoshi doesn’t steal health, Raphael could do a vampire bite and steal health. It could definitely work.

NO MORE VAMPIRE SHIT

Range up for Talim's SC would be pretty good, although, I'd prefer she had more range to start with (make her lunge a bit more on her attacks). Not that it would ever happen, but I'd love to see Rachel Alucard's gimmick on her... using wind to control her jumps better and draw opponents into attacks.

Yeah, I only realized upon look closer that Yoshimitsu steals meter from his opponent, not health. Well, technically he can steal health too with a special move (god he has like ten zillion moves). But yeah, Talim could fire wind blasts, summon cyclones and propel herself forward or in the air. Raphael could definitely have special vampiric moves where he drains health/meter from his enemy, and maybe even summon bats? Who knows.

I don't even like Talim (I don't DISlike her either though) and I'm still hype for her reveal just 'cause of how much everyone wants her, lol. I was so mad that they didn't reveal her at E3, on Phillippine Independance Day or Talim's birthday. Like you had 3 opportunities in one week and blew all of 'em, lol.

In a way, I kind of wish they wouldn't title the videos 'X Character Reveal Trailer' or show their art in the thumbnail. It would be awesome if we didn't know who it was until they show the artwork and the announcer booms the name.

To sound like a total loser for a moment, I've fantasized about that happening a lot. In said fantasy I'm just sitting there like "welp, let's see who it is today. I bet it's Astaroth..." and then BOOM "AMY!" and my jaw hits the floor in shock.

Of course, that won't happen.

My theory is that MAYBE if Raphael is in the game, Amy might appear in cutscenes or, at best, an NPC helper made with CAS using Raph's style, but I have zero hope of her ever being playable with her own style back :( I bet we'll get bloody Viola as DLC though -_-

Daily Amy-sulking over, onto something I noticed in the E3 gameplay videos; Zasalamel no longer pulls enemies in when he activates Soul Charge. I wonder why this is? I thought that was a cool feature since it differs him from the 'pushback' effect of other characters' SC and also calls back to him being Abyss. Seems a shame to drop that and make him like the other characters SC :(

I almost would like to see Abyss as an alternate costume for him, or maybe even be a 'demon form' ala Kilik.

Was anyone here able to get their hands on him at E3? I understand that certain attacks drop curses on the enemy and that he can then 'activate' the curses to slow them for an amount of time depending on the number of curses attached to them, but how do you actually activate the curse? Is it similar to a Brave Edge input where you hit the super button during a combo?

Abyss as a costume would be cool, or at the very least his Irkalla scythe from that form. He still has that move from what it seemed in footage, but I believe the person who did it was hit out of it, and it wasn't connected to his SC I don't believe. Definitely a shame it's not also a part of his SC like the trailer made it seem, though.
