Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

It's not about having a gimmick, it's about being exciting to watch and easy to differentiate. Mitsu, Sophie, Xianghua, Mina, Maxi don't have some big crazy gimmick to them, they're just designed with a personality to their style and to be fun to watch. There's not much personality that comes across with Hwang's style by comparison, it's just a normal sword user.

I just want to see some actual personality to him if he's in the game, and not feel like we've got this random background NPC on the roster.

They'd better not do that to Tira! She doesn't deserve it!
They won't tbh. She's completely unique, is pretty popular, has an interesting gimmick (her mood swings mid-fight), has a backstory that hasn't yet been explored (and SCVI would be the perfect time to do it), has the distinction of being the only evil female character in the series and managed to survive the SCV roster cuts while most female characters sadly didn't. She has more reasons to be included in SCVI than she has to be left out and nobody can tell me otherwise!

So Bamco Europe's press release mentions that Astaroth's fighting style is based on Rock's, don't know if this is hinting Rock will be in the game or if they're just acknowledging the lore.

In SCIII & IV, Rock had a Mace.

Tira was the only SCIII newcomer that wasn't replaced or was unfinished code to make it in SCV. Hayate said Tira has a High Chance of being in SCVI.

Okay, no, I'm sorry but you are using a bunch of extremely skewed stuff to make sense.

First of all, there is no way in hell they would bring Rock back if it meant leaving Tira out, Tira is a much more popular character and the dude who is balancing the game is the Evo champion of SCV who mained her.

Inferno for all we know could be just a Nightmare Skin, which is more likely than a mimic, again they know mimics are not welcomed after SCV had 3 of them and Okubo also directed Tekken, they kicked Mokuji out and Mokuji was even a mascot type of character.

And I know people here have a boner for Hwang, but I still think Yun has a bigger chance to be in.

Also, the Lizardman silhouette is not a good parameter, we need the game model in the first place.

Okubo was just the producer on Tekken & Soulcalibur VI. Mi-na's conformation makes me think Lizardman might be just a story mode skin. If she wasn't confirmed at EVO yesterday there was a chance Lizardman would be 2 lines above Nightmare in the list of blurred out names.

That positioning for Mi-na doesn't make any sense. It makes the most sense if Hwang is below Grøh and Seong Mi-na is below Hwang, a new line added that's not on this screenshot. Do you not see how silly this looks?

...
Grøh
Hwang
Ivy
Cervantes
Seong Mi-na
Astaroth
Nightmare
Siegfried
...

Maybe the story select was based off the 20 slots as opposed to 23? Still seems convenient enough for bosses.

Or some characters don’t get stories like Inferno or Lizzy.

Inferno and Grøh's dad make sense to not get stories, since they're mid boss and final boss, respectively, in all likelihood. Though it is maybe possible that Grøh's dad could get an unlockable line once the main story is totally complete, or when you've completed all the main story and all the other side stories, as an extra bonus story. Lizardman fits perfectly between Cervantes and Astaroth, though, where Mi-na allegedly would go and doesn't make sense, while Mi-na can go below Hwang on a new line and make a lot more sense. Then the only other new line that would need to be added would be for either Raphael or Cassandra, whichever one makes it into the game. And the DLC characters could also get lines, that's not an impossibility.

Fine. I don't expect this to change any minds, but I'll try to explain why Hwang is cool.

He's an example of the soldier archetype. Eschewing personal gain and glory, he chooses to fight to protect his country. As expected, his personality is not boastful (like Mitsurugi, Maxi or Yun-Seong), nor does it have any of the inner anguish that characterizes the series' protagonists (i.e. Kilik, Siegfried). He approaches each battle seriously (unlike Xianghua or Seung-Mina), but treats his opponents with respect ("I'll remember your defeat," "You won't be forgotten," etc.). His personality is that of the quintessential martial artist - similar to Ryu from Street Fighter, really.

His fighting style matches his personality nicely. His sword strikes are quick and efficient, with very little wasted movement. In contrast, his legwork is very fancy, inspired by Taekwondo. (This is of course anachronistic, but let's give it a pass, since no one cares about martial arts history.) I guess you could say his sword strikes are the soldier aspect of his character and his kicks are the Korean part. The two elements complement one another in a satisfying way.

This type of character (serious & respectful personality, simple & efficient fighting style) has always been very popular in fighting games. I think a lot of new players would gravitate towards him if he were brought back.

I'd also like to mention how many clever cultural elements Hwang brings together. South Korea still has compulsory military service for men, and Hwang is a soldier. Hwang is helping to protect his country from an invasion from 16th century Japan, while the actual invasion of Korea by 20th century Japan led to the creation of modern taekwondo. This invasion also inspired the ban on samurai images in the media, which led to Hwang's initial creation. It's FULL CIRCLE.

Dammit! You made it much harder for me which of the two Korean studs I want back!

I still don’t expect him back for someone who’s only been a fully fledged character for two games over someone who quite literally eclipsed him (and that also happens to one of Yun-seong’s life goals).

Still, color me surprised if he does return for the game.

1. I don't expect him either. I've been hoping for his return (as a full character) since SC2, and I have no doubt that Project Soul well keep disappointing me on this point.
2. Even if he's only had a storyline in two games, I've loved his playstyle in SC1, 2 and 3. It's not as if I'm asking them to create a character from scratch.
3. Look at it this way: Yun-Seong won't really be able to eclipse his rival until they've fought one another as equals: full character to full character. Unless Hwang is someday brought back, Yun will never be a real boy. :sc2yun2::sc3hwang1:
Your character has numerous gimmicks so what's the issue?
My character = Hwang? Or Taki?
Anyway, my point is that a character doesn't need a gimmick in order to be a worthy addition to the game.

But maybe Rock can be a full grappler with cesti?

I don’t mean to harp on about him like that, but a surprise character like Mi-Na and possibly one of her countrymen means Rock may be possible. Even so, he copied Astaroth’s CF and had a CaS voice...

Or Cassie gets the bigger sword and Lizzy is based off of her instead.

He's gone bud. Good riddance.

I hope. Just trying not to be dissapointed if he does show up.

Let’s see if Rock triggers Verge to say something. He never said anything about Rock at all afaik. Hayate may have leaned to Rock’s presence I think.

All that matters is Best Girl is in.
