Current Build has placeholder for 20 Characters

One of the interviews, Okubo stated that what you see now isn't indicative of the final roster number.

It just seems to weird they'd opt to put in a bunch of "random" circles and only have Mitsurugi and Sophitia as available choices. I'd imagine that the dev team figured out super early which characters they were going to work on, and then designed a select screen based on the final release-date available characters.

Obviously DLC characters could shuffle things about but no one is arguing that.

If they are going the DLC route, I can definitely see a year 0 (Launch), year 1, year 2, etc. which would be really great. If they went the Killer Instinct route and kept adding to the game every year would be really nice.

However, in reality, I don't see it happening because that would be really ambitious, and its Soul Calibur, not Tekken.

Could be that those are the characters that they currently have working in game and just blanked out their faces to get it to the show.

This sounds like some heavy self denial hope... Keep telling yourself that and eventually you'll believe it's true.

Unless there is an actual reference/quote, it's looking like 20 is the number.

Well, remember there could be less than 20, what if the middle button isn't a random character button? What if one of the buttons is also a create a soul slot? or a random create a soul slot?

I had loads of fun with the retarded random CAS in SC4.

" The number of playable characters (the count of empty slots around Mitsurugi and Sophitia was not representative according to Bandai Namco)..."

@Vergeben also said that his sources tell him it will be more than 20 characters, and his track record with SoulCalibur leaks has been pretty solid (we'll see if the Switch possibility turns out to be true in time).

Since this character select screen got out, everyone seems to be looking for quantity instead of quality. 20 characters are more than enough for the base game, better to have fully fleshed characters than rushed ones with something broken to exploit. People are forgetting that DLC chars could potentially happen but I kinda hope that's not the case; I personally hope they even start us off with 10 characters and let us unlock the rest of the cast by playing the game instead of buying dlc, like how past SC games did things
Oh, there will be DLC characters. Lots of them at worst. Hope for the best outcome since they already have it in mind to withhold some as DLC.

I think it was leaked via Verge in the 500+ page long thread. I may be wrong. The only one who is likely to be included given what has leaked is Maxi so far. With either Siegfried or Nightmare being picked with the other cut being highly likely, I can't even say which one.
I've leaked a few at this point. So I'll go down the list for you guys here.
Kilik (with staff moveset back, which was more obvious as to why ever since it was announced to be a reboot)
Xianghua
Maxi (also, Maxi might be gay on VI from what I heard)
Astaroth
Nightmare
Siegfried
Ivy
Talim
Tira
New guy with the dual blade that can fight with the weapon together or two swords separately (he's an assassin that is Kilik's rival)
New guy's parent (also uses a totally new moveset/style, not replacing any characters either)

Heard Zasalamel is "very likely" but not with surety that he's in, so it wouldn't be a massive leap in logic to say there's a chance he could be DLC.

Oh thank goodness.

On the topic of DLC characters, do we have any ballpark as to what "lots" could mean, and how often it's coming? For example: something like a (correctly executed) SF5-esque once a month type deal would probably be more welcomed than what SC4 and SC5 did with the "other console/pre-order time release exclusive" nonsense, and that was only one character. Calibur is a series that I don't really have a problem throwing money at, especially if it expands gameplay in a meaningful way.

In addition, do you know if we're going to see DLC characters interact with the story mode in any meaningful way? Or are we going to maybe get the possibility of something like Algol in his SC5 attire in moveset as DLC, even though storyline wise he shouldn't "fit"? I think a lot of people would be completely fine with having some storyline jank as DLC if it means they get to play as their favorite characters.

And again, thanks for sticking around and giving us a steady stream of information.

Since Season Passes are in vogue and common practice now, it is mostly likely going to be handled that way in terms of adding new characters. But I have no idea what gap inbetween putting the characters out would be or anything like that.
Same with if characters who might not factor into the story as DLC, or those that for instance would, but would be NPCs until released as DLC.
Furthermore, the game could get some kind of story mode update for all I know if there should be a need for one. I have no idea at the moment at least in regards to all of that.

Trying not to be the negative one here but just about everyone says that sort of thing to cover their hides. All I'll say is that I hope the DLC isn't an overload of guests. Perhaps it can be treated like time-release characters back in the arcade days or something?

I think the story will cross multiple time lines.

If the story begins 22 years before SC6, that would be when Talim was born. pretty much to the year. That might be a interesting story point to have a baby Talim fought over.

She always was a cutie. :)

But if she is playable then the story would need to jump forward in time a lot. So the story could have multiple time points but in arcade or vs they could all fight.

I'll just tell you all right now: stop thinking about the previous timeline and canon. Aspects are the same and similar, but don't expect all the same events to be retold the same way.
They're intentionally ignoring saying character's birth years and ages in Sophitia and Mitsurugi's bios for VI.
Start thinking of this more as a reboot. Just like they stressed in the interview as the key word for the game.
And if you're thinking the SCVI roster will be a 1:1 recreation of SC1's, well, stop thinking that too.

Cool. I like how you said the parent of the dual bladed character should be in. Not sure if the "parent" is male or female.

Also I'm guessing these will be two of two to five new characters, not counting guest characters.

It might clash with character archetypes but I'm hoping for a younger honorable knight version of Hilde like the 14 y/o concept art. Would not mind a bit older, 16 to 24 age.

It'd be funny if "Edgy McMaul's" parent was a woman who looked the right age as a response to SCV's roster "overhaul." But "Edgy McMaul" could be a woman. Looks slender enough...
