Ivy matchups discussion and strategies

I don't know of any specific tactics or punishes against Mitsu. I've played so many Mitsus online that a match against him is based on pure muscle memory.

Hey Kinectic,
I heard from SSnortme that your anti-viola game's monstrous.
You got any tips for the rest of us to deal with Viola?

My roommate plays a pretty mean Vi, so that matchup is my specialty. Let's see...

-Always try to duck punish her orb callback attack strings with FC 1B. It might not always launch, but it'll give your opponent something to fear. (If they start catching on, omit this from your gameplay.)
-Duck punish the second attack of 66A,A,B attack string with FC 1B to eliminate mixup possibilities.
-Whenever you hear "Fear." (ie no orb 6B+K), try to poke her before she can apply mixups.
-The second attack in "Pierce through." (umm... 8A+B, I think. Sorry, I know her moves mostly by what she says, lol XD) can be GI'd. The GI will send her backflipping, and a 2B+K can be combo'd with her landing damage for about 50 damage I believe.
-Abuse 7B! Use it to jump over her 2B+K callback, use it to create distance, and use it when you just don't want to be thrown into a 10+ hit combo.
-Her B+G throw RO's in front, her A+G no orb RO's behind-ish, and her A+G with orb actually RO's to the left side I think. Keep that in mind.
-No need to fear her lows. Her 4A+B (I think) is her only high damage low, and it's startup is pretty obvious.
-44A BE = GI third hit. Not sure if it can be stepped, so I always play it safe.

That's all I can think of right now... If there's something else specific about the matchup that's troubling, I could probably help.

Thanks for your help. I played SSnort last night and got absolutely trashed (7:20), his Viola game has improved a lot.
44A BE is annoying as hell, does so much damage, I'm guessing GI, 8A+B,B is what you use to stop it?

I have just a few more questions.
2A_2B spam-->WR B is pretty obnoxious. I'm pretty sure you can 214B any 2A,2B spam, but WR B catches 214B slightly due to random tracking. It tracks well to viola's left but not her right. The problem is WR B is so fast that I'm forced to block it half the time...what's the best punish for that move?

Also 8A+B seems pretty hard to punish as well. Unless you know it's coming and constantly step, if you block it, there seems to be little you can do to punish viola. Got any tips against that as well?

Thanks a bunch, I owe ya one.

Yes, that should work. Always save up meter to GI this. I think you can also jump during it to at least avoid being pressured/combo'd.

Viola's use 2A_2B a lot to regain the advantage. The best thing to do is predict when 2A_2B spam is coming, block one of the hits, then throw in your own 2A. If she blocks your 2A, try 7B to get away. I say this because WR B cannot be punished.

Always save up meter for this too. Not 100% sure, but I think Ivy can only punish this at ring edge. Again, if you GI it, you get a free 50 damage combo with 2B+K.

I play defensively against Viola because she is always pretty open since she's always using orb callbacks. If you're too aggressive, Viola will poke out half your health before you even realize it. Also, I think Viola's 3B can be punished with 6B8K, so watch out for that.

No problem =]

Many Ivy players I've met have a hard time against Viola...she's annoying as hell.
From talking to kinetic clash, it seems that GI is the answer to many of her moves.
I hope your punishment charts prove otherwise, ring.

WHY on earth is viola so damn safe?!

I can't find anything to stop 4B, it's completely safe and pushes Ivy back. 6B8K doesn't work!
her WR B is safe on block

I just found out through testing that her 8A+B can be stopped by side stepping the second hit and applying 22_88B since you're sidestepping anyway.

Ivy isnt exactly a walk in the park either.

Played a few Violas last night. I don't know if they were particularly talented or not, but I tried to go on the offensive, because as soon as the standard Viola gets a hit through, it seems like you're half/fully dead before you get another chance.
One round I had her down to nearly dead (you couldn't see her life bar), and my health was full. Then I got thrashed in a 10hit combo or such, and lost the round anyway. I have no idea how to break out of those insane combos of hers, and I can't really see what's going on.
One guy I played was called something like Were-Wolf-something-something I think, on the Paris arena. Seemed like an ok dude, maybe I'll challenge him again some more, see if I can figure something out.

You can't break the combos once they start, no amount of air control can stop it.
sometimes I feel like I'm watching a movie rather than playing when I fight viola.

It's gonna be tough to do Viola's punishment chart given that she can make some of her moves safe (I think) when she calls the orb from behind. I will do what I can.

By the way, I think Ivy's a bad matchup for Viola. She gets easier to play against once you know more about the character.

I thought that orb really gave Ivy the advantage? Every time you hear Viola say "come" you can FC 1B her because that orb is high.

No, I'm talking about 6B+K (when orb is set), it's a delayed s-mid orb that comes from behind your character. She can use this in conjunction to other moves. I'm just not sure yet if this affects recovery of her moves like in Algol's case (bubbles).

W/O orb BB(orb call back) can be punished with 4A
I think Ivy does really well vs Viola. The trick to beating her is to out range her. Unless she's in your face she doesn't have any tracking except for her attack where she jumps forward and hits low, but that's pretty seeable.

So, back up and always walk to the side.

Keep her out with:
7B
8AB,
214B
1A

The W/O orb BBB (callback) the call back can be ducked and punished with FC1B

Ring, when you say Ivy is a bad match up for Viola do you mean that Viola is the one who has trouble against her?

Neo says you mean it like Ivy does bad against Viola.

I meant Viola has trouble against Ivy.

But that was before the patch. Now people are calling Viola broke (SC4 Hilde level broke) so I don't know anymore...

Yeah, cause Neo doesnt believe that for a second. During our set i told him that some people believe Ivy does well against Viola, then he said your post meant that Ivy is actually bad fighting against Viola.

My mistake
I'm biased towards your "now OP" viola
:P
