NEC XII SC4 Full Results & Aftermath

The final major tournament for Soulcalibur IV is now in the books here at NEC XII in Philadelphia, PA. Competitors from across North America and Europe participated in one of the toughest tournaments that I have seen during the life of this game, along with those who came to try out the demo build of Soulcalibur V.

I would like to thank everyone who came through to NEC, to the European players for flying over to compete, to the staff who helped keep things going, and to Namco Bandai for their support of NEC XII. Everyone had a hand in making NEC an amazing success.

Shame the weekend is over already :(

Congrats to Woahhzz for taking singles and Lolo and Scud for placing top 3.

GGs to everyone I played and hope to see all of you again in SCV.

I'll post my for real shoutouts after I'm done with this 12hrs of travel to London. ;/
You did real good Partisan. You should be proud of how well you performed. Sorry I didn't say goodbye, Fallen and I decided to leave after heading out to get breakfast since we had an 8 hour trip back home. I'll be getting my passport this year so we can get some casuals in. I know you are probably disappointed that you did not take 1st, but I've been watching your performance since I joined in May and you have increased drastically in such a short amount of time. Much respect and I think we all know that you will be a major threat in SCV. Good job man.

GGs to everyone. I laughed so hard Saturday my face hurt for hours. Thanks for the great times, see you all next game!

Also, congrats to all placers. For me to single out one, ten, or any number of players for being exceptional this weekend it would be a crime. We were in a room full of killers, you guys make my jaw drop.

Also, thanks for coming all the way to America AGAIN, France, I hope you had a blast.

Shit man, this was the best tournament hands down, gotta congratulate all my people from SC america and europe, so much hi level gameplay.
Got to thanks the organizer cause i HAD FUN watching all the streams, they were like five streams each with different games, perfect. Gotta say LOLO my brother the dance man, that made my whole christmas and also Mick laughting his ass of with lolos dance LOL, thanks to Namco for caring for the community, I had to be there shit, GREAT GAMES BITCHES IM GLAD IM PART OF THIS COMMUNITY, WHOAZ YOUR IVY BLEW ME AWAY YOU ARE THE MAN.

So I just got back from NEC12 and I would like to make this post to address a few concerns. You guys don't usually see me posting in result threads; but I feel there are a lot of issues and criticisms that need to be addressed. First things first, I would like to apologize for the issues we had this weekend; especially to the Europeans. You guys travelled very far and we should have a better run event for you.

As for the lack of Soulcalibur IV singles on stream. If you check the schedule I had posted, you can see that I had 2 hours set aside for SC4 singles on stream (KOF had a 2 hour block as well, and Tekken had a 1 hour block). However, half-way through Saturday, I was told that KOF had been pushed back to Sunday, in which case I wouldn't have to use that 2 hour block for KOF. I instead, to be fair, gave an extra hour to Tekken (to bring their stream time to 2 hours) and chalked the remaining hour as a buffer for in case the stream had holdups.

The schedule was running smoothly, and then later in the night, I was told that KOF had started; and had not been pushed back to Sunday. Atlas, the publishers of KOF were a sponsor for NEC, so I was obligated to give them stream time. So this forced me to take the 2 hour stream block for SC4 and give it to KOF. This was unavoidable and for this I apologize.

The Soulcalibur community is my family; and if I had it my way, we would still have our own stream at NEC. However, the bandwidth requirements just make that not feasible anymore. NO GAME has their own dedicated stream at NEC. At NEC, I was streaming FIVE games, not just Soulcalibur. But to make it up to you guys, I made sure to stream as much SC5 as possible; we have over 10 hours of streaming video from SC5!

Moving on to the next subject of contention: the late start times.

The team tournament was supposed to start at 2; it instead started at 2:30... I don't consider that a failure, that worked out pretty well. The team tournament moved very fast and was handled very well. At last years NEC, the team tournament was a travesty and took forever because many people were stuck playing other games. This time around, I told specific people who I KNEW would be entering multiple games that they would not be permitted to enter the team tournament as it would hold things up. Because of this, the team tournament went smoothly and we didn't really have to run around to find people.

However, the singles event is another story. The tournament was supposed to start at 6pm; but it instead started 2 hours late. Why? Because of confusion, and I won't want to put the blame on anyone specific. This is the first time in our community that we've ever done online registration for tournaments and it was a learning experience. Lots of people made mistakes, and it will be rectified for future events. Unfortunately, because of the late start times, and the fact that the Europeans had an early flight out the next day, the singles event and the America VS Europe challenge had to run concurrently which slowed things down even worse. Sunday was run very well, as we had 6 stations and we cranked out the rest of the tournament before Europe had to jet.

That being said... I am hearing complaints that even if the event started at 6pm as scheduled; thats still too late. People want the singles event to start around 4pm. This is definately possible, as long as we start teams at 12 noon. In the future, we will give this consideration. That being said, pre-registration for tournaments is definately the way to go, as it gives us a better idea of how many people are entered into specific games, and how many stations would be required to keep things running smoothly.

Speaking with RTD this morning, his biggest concern was waiting in lines. Even if everything ran on schedule, he would still have had to stand in 3 lines during the event. Once for venue, again for teams, and then finally again for singles. I spoke with BigE about this very same issue, and it mirrors a lot of criticism over the course of the weekend. He assured me that this issues are being worked on and will be handled better in future events.

Anyways... I am currently uploading 23gb of video to Youtube...

Jaxel: A friend of mine entered the MvC3 tournament, and comparatively everything SC ran like a dream. I don't know what else you have heard, but you definitely have my appreciation for doing what you were able to do in the midst of the cacophony that was NEC. If I were at home, I would have wanted to see SCV.

I talked to some people outside Sunday morning who were in UMvC3 and, yes, comparitively, our event ran like clockwork.

From what I understand, all of Saturday they only managed to complete 2 pools, out of, I believe, 8 or 9. From what *they* told me, and you can chalk this up to hearsay, they were supposed to have finished pools by the end of saturday night, and most of the pools hadn't even started yet on Sunday morning.

So, Jaxel, you did the best you could.

Back home.

CONGRATULATION Whoaaz ! You are the champion !
And congratulation America. You won and deserve it. Nice matches guy's.

Thank you Jaxel for the tournament. It was a nice tournament, with lots of hype and fun. + Rich + Daishi + Soul V. Thanks for that.

Thanks to Namco for bringing SC V so people can play it, and to listen and talk with people about it. Congratulation to the Japan crew for kicking ass at their game: SC V. Not so many game designer in the world may do such a thing.

See you guy's at WGC2012 or at EVO2012.

USA, Mexico, France, Canada
Such a nice TOP4 to end the Soul Calibur 4 era.

Oh, Malek, that reminds me, let me express my thanks for all the French players who made the journey to close the book on Calibur 4, it wouldn't have been the same without you.

Even with the ass whooping you and Pantocrator gave me, I'm very glad you all made it out here. And extra props to you, Malek, for being so gracious in both victory and defeat. You're a monster of a player and a really nice guy.

Jaxel, I think you did a FANTASTIC job running the stream and I greatly appreciate your hard work. I was a little upset about the SCIV singles not being streamed but I got over it, lol.
Lolo's truffle shuffle made up for it. :P
My only complaint is for next time... have someone on the stream who is paying attention to the stream chat monsters.
There was a particular questions that myself and others wanted answered from Utoh since he was sitting RIGHT THERE but it took almost an hour to get answered and about 5 of us repeating that same question until someone finally texted NeoRussel to ask.
Other then that, I enjoyed watching the entire event, I'm glad ya'll had fun and I cannot wait to try out SCV for myself at SCR! :)

how was he? was he preety much like SC maxi or a new one altogether?
Well I suck on tournament sticks so I couldn't dig in like I wanted to. He is powerful though and his old 66B4 which is now just 6B4 was saving my ass against this Asteroth player. His loops where reduced to just PSL1/2 so you might have to rely on wavering light more when people try to pressure you. Some of his new stance moves move his body around a lot so it maybe possible to space while looping to some extent

There was a lot that I did to prepare for my first tournament. Made a list and packed my bags. Spent weeks training against Fallen. We brought a GPS with us, programmed in the address to the venue (along with Sean Connery voice) and headed off. On our trip there, we avoided toll roads, making the trip about 9.5 hours. There are some strange spots if you don’t take the turnpike. One truck stop was so foreboding that as I was using the bathroom I got such a terrible feeling that when I got back into the car I put all of my money in my shoe. There were cardboard signs that pointed to the bathrooms and when I got in there, the urinals were badly rusted over and when I washed my hands they wreaked of something awful. The place was enveloped in fog and was straight out of Silent Hill.

We thought this was a joke.

As we approached Philadelphia, the sign came zooming by over head and Mike says to me, “have you ever seen a more beautiful sign than that.” “No I haven’t.” And it was a lot like approaching the pearly gates, the hotel buildings up high. ..

There were a few things that caught me off guard at NEC so here’s a heads up to anyone that is interested in showing up next time:

  1. Fourpoints is the discounted cheapy hotels that you stay at. The venue is actually located at the Sheraton Suites.
  2. When you arrive at Sheraton Suites to play, you can’t just walk into your venue. You’ll need a wrist band which you can find on the lower level (everything takes place on the lower level) and you can find it at the two long tables that are set up all the way in the back.
I woke up early (The stream said that it started at 9AM so I got up at 8:30AM and went over to scout.) I couldn’t find the room for Soul Calibur, asked the woman at the front desk who gave me very cold “answers” which translated to “I don’t care about this stuff, find the room yourself.” After roaming around a bit longer I immediately recognized Bibulus who was kind enough to point out the spot. Just the mere connection of someone who I seen on stream and am now seeing them in real life was an amazing experience.

After poking in and out of the hotel, finally the doors were open and I seen 3 guys waiting at the door, and beyond them was Soul Calibur V being played on the monitors. After asking them how long they’ve been waiting there for, some guy came to the door and closed it on us, which was another cold move. Fallen and I leave to get breakfast and come back, and now there a door man demanding wrist bands and pointed me in the direction of a massive line.

McDonalds-USSR-28396881681.jpeg
The line could have been worse, like this one.

There were two lines: one for people who planned ahead and preregistered online, and the other for nonpreregistered (cash only). The cash-only line had no one in it, while the people who preplanned were stuck in a very long line. This sent a mixed message to us. I probably waited about 20 minutes or so because there were problems with the check list. Some people signed up using their real name, while others signed up using their gamer names which for some reason created a lot of confusion and took forever to sign up. (Once I got my wrist band I threw away my online ticket which was a big mistake. Because even though we jotted our gamer names down, signing up for the tournament required another signup so I was out of luck there and had to pay another $10.) None of this meant anything to me because the event started and I was there.

I think the first thing that I thought when I stepped into the room was how small it was. Probably thinking something like “Oh this must be where just the SC5 play testing will happen and we will eventually move to a bigger room.” That didn’t happen. And people kept pouring into the room (a sign said max occupancy 49 or something) there was easily over a hundred people at any given moment. At some point I heard someone yell, “I don’t have anything to set up!” and I thought something along the lines of “wow sucks to be those gamers” without knowing that he was talking about Soul Calibur. There were three CRT/TVs set up running SC4, so I offered to bring in my console for the fourth TV and Malice was kind enough to unlock the stuff and chastise me when I left my pads at the console. It was clear evidence of how naïve I was going into this, in fact I didn’t even know how to sync my controllers since I only did that once when I bought the PS3. So thank you Malice for not letting me look too stupid in front of everyone :)

1) Always hold on to your Controller/Stick
2) Carry a spare Sync cable with you because they are like gold
3) If you have a wireless controller turn it off after you are finished playing, and I advise not to keep it in your pocket because it can come on.

Anyway, so there were four CRTs and I got a few games in. Someone stepped in and asked to play next so by all means I let them. There weren’t many people engaging in SC4 since the SCV demo was up and running. But then something happened. Focus shifted to SC4 and people were on those consoles nonstop. I waited to play. .. Looking around I waited to play still. I think I waited a few good hours—constantly getting pushed back into the crowd—not really taking much of a hint as to what I should be doing. Probably about 8 hours of roaming around like an idiot pass by. The sound of people yelling announcements (blood curdling screams I tell you), megaphones blasting, rumbling from the Tekken Tag 2 machines in the distance, and people bumping into me.(If I hear "excuse me" any time soon, im gonna shoot someone.) The only time I’ve experience a crowd this packed was an All Shall Perish concert. Sweat beads at my forehead, my brain like mush.. then something in my head clicks.

This tournament was a scenario, just like certain matchups must be played differently. There were only four CRTs and to get any game experience in, I had to be aggressive. Positioning was key, and when anyone stopped watching and walked away that was my cue to move forward to get closer to the TVs. That still wasn’t enough, though. Some people would keep playing. Some people had like 20 matches between each other and my scrubby side took this personally. I remembered then, when someone complained in the 8WR chat about how no one would let them play. Then I said, “did you ask them to let you play?” and he said no. So I realized then that it was not some game at some dudes place, but a tournament with a limited amount of CRTs. Brushing up and getting games in was worth pure gold.

Remember these three words, "I got next." (another ty to idle for this)

This makes me a feel a bit conflicted, and I’ll come at you guys from two different perspectives: the competitive player and the scrubby newbie. Coming from the competitive player, do or die, play to win point of view, I can understand that. So hogging a machine for 20 matches makes sense if no one even asks to play. Why should I assume that some punk has been standing behind me for an hour waiting to play? If he wants to play so bad then let him ask to get some games in. This mentality makes sense.

Coming from the Scrubby vacationer’s view point, it was very frustrating. The point of going was not to win the tournament and show how great I was, it was to get games in with people on equal or greater skill levels. Having only four CRTs running with an event so big as the FINAL tournament for soul calibur 4 came across more like SC4 and T6 were just afterthoughts—like no one would be interested in playing those old ass games. New is better and the consumer knows it. That was the most disappointing thing about the whole experience. An eight+ hour trip to only get in a about ten games at best. Then one of the guys on the megaphones shouts that this is terrible tournament. I think that’s when I decided not to take it personally, but that this was probably just a bad first impression.

But like I said. I can see it from both perspectives and can relate to both of them. I can also see why the fighting genre has such a small scene because coming from the scrubby vacationist pov there was so little accessibility that there were probably much better things to do—like watch the stream from home for free :P which was much better directed than the actual event. About accessibility: I was about to do a video about a month ago about how Special Versus mode shouldn’t exist. The game should only have one game mode—the real game mode. I understand now that the reason for these fun/stupid/random game modes is just to get people in the door. And as long as there are sign post that direct them and encourage them to play the real game then it doesn’t really matter. I think this is where Namco dropped the ball in the past. Even famous commentators like Day9 once only played money maps and fought the computer with cheat codes in Starcraft. So from a first-timer’s scrubby experience that’s how I feel. A bit cheated, a lot of time lost, and a frustrating grueling experience. It wasn’t accessible. From the fighter’s play to win perspective, I am reflecting on all the lost opportunities that I will be able to maximize next time. I must learn how to adapt to the tournament itself before considering playing the game.

Even though I was knocked out of the tournament fairly early, it was a real honor meeting Partisan, IdleMind, OmegaXCN, lolo, Thuggish, Pantocrator, Bibulus, Keev, Jaxel, Sporko. You guys made the trip worth it and more. The whole experience was so surreal and I’m humbled and glad to be a part of this crew.

TLDR:

Woahhzz says good bye to Soul Calibur 4 with style. Good shit.

I had a blast, it was awesome seeing everyone. I regret not being able to personally say goodbye to everyone before leaving, but I look forward to seeing all ya'll again at Winter Brawl for SC5.

And one last thing before I end this post:

REKKI is such a badass, he decides to make it into top 10 winners bracket, and then DQ himself from the rest of the tournament so that people can continue to underestimate him when the new Calibur comes.

What a guy.

....

Edit: Props and stuff will come later. What an awesome weekend.

Great weekend, had an awesome time. Met some new players, saw some from WAY back, and almost everyone was great. Was really grateful to get into the SC5 exhibition and get some Raph action on stream. I dunno how much I can travel for SC5 until I get better situated financially, but I'll do my best to stay active.

Yoshi-san (aka Utoh-san) said on the stream that maybe they should name Raph's GGGGGGG as "Kowtow dance". He is the AI programmer of SC5, so it would be funny if he'd program GGGGG as one of Raph's post KO taunts.

All I'm going to say is the next time Malek needs any donations to get to a US tourney (regardless of whether I'm going or not), my name will be on the donation list.

"Words, pictures"

It seems like you learned some things from this, and that's what matters. The FG community is filled to capacity with gigantic egos and "do whatever it takes to get what you want, at all costs" mentalities.

If you don't want to get trampled on (and I don't mean in tournament), you've gotta have the cajones to demand your fair share of....well....whatever it is you want.

That being said, in three years of playing this game I've only met a couple guys I'd consider bad people and, as far as I know, none of them post here. Some people just require more bluntness than others.

As times goes on, people warm up to you. You stop being that new guy who just showed up and start being "Ohhh, yo, Sp1d3r! Great to see you, man!" You become a part of the community instead of just that guy who is there *around* the community.

It's a great feeling, I'm not going to lie, and I have made so many friends from this damn game that they now constitute half of my social circle, if not more. Hell, if you count the guys from other cities that you only see once or twice a year, and not just the people you see regularly or talk to on the forums/in chat frequently, then this game alone has added 3 digits worth of people to my social circle. And knowing you share something with all of them, something that links all of those people together...it can become a rather intense experience in its own way.

They're not just a haphazard assortment of friends and acquaintances, they come to coalesce into an honest to god community. There are communal experiences, communal memories, communal joys, communal sorrows and communal outrages. It's an entirely other experience, born from simple socialization and, yet, set apart from it, and I am profoundly thankful to be a part of it.

I'm sure you will be too

lol the kick/guard dance has been around for a while, I'm surprised he hasn't seen it. It really wouldn't be fair to name it that after all this time. I'm sure people who have stuck by Raph in past games would be pretty upset haha. I just wanted to rep that dance on the stream.
