Prototype vs. Infamous

Bought inFamous yesterday and played thru it last night and it's pretty fun. The characters are pretty bland and generic except Cole which is ok because he reminds me of this guy and his sexy voice.
 
That review made me "larf" but seriously if your interested in the story then your choice has to be infamous. But if you want blood and gore a-la god of war then you should play prototype.
 
I just played the demo for Infamous, and although I'm quick to judge, I honestly thought it was horrible. The animation was shit- Cole runs like a handicapped person, shooting enemies doesn't do shit to them and it takes too long to chase them down for a melee attack, climbing is slow and redundant, and the train mission they give you is unbelievably boring. It doesn't even seem innovative- the Wolverine game offers more action than this. I understand that this is just one mission, but I can't imagine it getting much more exciting with these controls. If someone would care to correct me, I'd like to better understand why it's getting so much praise.
 
Because the story is actually interesting and you can do more than climb up buildings later in the game. Why would you chase an enemy when you can shot them with shock blast and grenades? Well any who the game is really well done the missions do get better especially the boss fight on the bridge. You need to play the game to get a better feel for it. The train mission is really slow and is meant more to open up the trains for you
 
But like I said, shooting/shockwaves don't do shit to enemies, forcing you to chase them down (unless the demo is totally different from the game). And I hate using the "good story" excuse to justify why a game is good. If a game like Shaq Fu was given an awesome story, I doubt it would change people's opinions of the actual game, because gameplay is what people care about.

I also forgot to mention that running is a bit difficult to control. You run so spastically I kept having to reposition myself on the train so I didn't fall off.
 
I guess the demo is different than the game because I have not had a problem when i run. The shockblast thing though makes sense because its your first weapon and they cant overpower it. Though you can kill enemies with one hit if you shoot them in the head. The electric weapons get better as the game progresses and you can upgrade the moves you can do now. You have to give the game a chance but to each there own I'm sure that the game isnt for everyone

i played the demo for infamous and i can say i was really bored... some stuff is cool like summoning lightning n all... but overall prototype seems like a really fun game with lot that u can do and go crazy... on that note can't wait for beyonetta...
 
What happened? I am seeing all the 2009 retrospectives, and I feel like everyone has forgotten their views on the subject matter. I got inFamous, because I'm a PS3 fanboy. I have never played Prototype, but pretty much all of the reviews at the time when the games came out said that both games were just as good as each other. Pretty much every outlet and video game reviewer said that both games are comparable, and no matter which one you get, you couldn't go wrong.

Now its half a year later, and everyone is doing those 2009 game of the year retrospectives... and it seems that EVERYBODY has forgotten what we thought about these two games 6 months ago. Suddenly everyone is saying that inFamous is one of the best games of the year, while Prototype is one of the worst. Even GameInformer put inFamous on their top games of the year, and Prototype on their top disappointments of the year. What happened? They are both single player games, so what has changed?
 
Because Prototype was so freaking shallow to begin with.
It's like people went around comparing both games by looking at the protagonist's powers. While Prototype on the surface looks amazing, better graphics, better animations, blood and gore, and clearly a more powerful hero. It's core gameplay is very boring, and the story lives much to be desired.

Like I have said before I played both games and my first impressions of Infamous were positive, it was addicting, story driven and actually challenging. My first impressions of Prototype where, you're very strong maybe too strong, you go around killing random people like GTA without any real consequence, the blood is absurd, and kicking helicopters looks stupid.

I think when its all said and done Infamous left more of a an impression on people. I want to see how the story develops.
I actually didn't even own Infamous until November 2009.
 
Yeah i need to stop trusting reviews and just wait a month after release to get the forum reviews. I've had some bad luck buying games that just aren't great because of review sites.

Are my top3 cases of Ign leading me wrong.

I played both of these games and felt the reviews were off as well. I did not finish either game simply because they didn't draw me and much as more current titles but Infamous is definitely better than Prototype. I got bored of Prototype VERY quickly as their was no depth to the game play mechanics. The story sucked, main character was unlikeable, etc. The only people I can see enjoying this game are the same kids who appeal to Sasuke-like (Naruto) characters and juvenile clichés like that. Infamous had some neat features but it felt very GTA to me at times and after GTA3, GTA Vice, GTA San, lil bit of GTA4 it was stale. I appreciated the story and controls however.

It's a bit unfair since I didn't beat either but I'd review them:

I LOVED [PROTOTYPE]. It was some of the best fun i've had in a while with a game. Just a lot of freedom of movement with a very free-style type of combat providing a quick change wheel for all the different abilities. I guess i'm so used to there being boundries on these action types like DMC, NG and even Bayonetta doesn't compare to the amount of control and freedom given on Prototype. You can climb any building at any time. No invisible walls except for the very edges of the map. Even then, it's not really an invisible way per say, the game just makes Alex travel back towards the island if you manage to travel far enough. If you travel too far on a bridge, i believe you get bombed! To me, that stuff is just cool. Its not lazy ass, lame invisible wall crap. The list goes on.

There are a tremendous amount of different ways to go about combat in general. Any weapon can be picked up and fired until it runs out of ammo. Which you wont miss it too much because they are litterally found everywhere and there is a decent variety of pick-ups. If nothing else, you can always pick up vehicles and throw them like....half a mile! And its New York, so yeah...there are a lot of cars. The weapons and vehicles are not so much better than your base abilities that you feel the need for them but they do provide enough advantage and edge for you to use them as they become available. An absolute perfect balance on that IMO which makes for a LOT of variety in game play.

The stealth mechanics are a nice addition to the game. It's not terribly fleshed out or comparable to what you would find in other games that do it much better but it's not supposed to be the main foccus of the game, just another tool you can use to make some of your missions a tad bit easier and a bit more varied.

People are knocking the story and plot pretty hard but i thought it did it's job well enough. I was genuinely intrigued when i discovered the "truth" about Alex Mercer. That whole Web of Intrigue really helped the story i thought. It was a lot of fun consuming all of those targets and piecing together more of the story each time. Generally games have useless, lame collectables that do absolutely nothing. Web of intrigue targets provided a Picture/video/vocals for each one that was either relevant to the story or at least entertaining on some level and there's like more than a 100!

The voice acting i felt was a very strong point for this game. It's entertaining to hear all the mililtary radio transmitions throughout the game while they are chasing you because you just blew up a military base.

I think i know why people are complaining about a lack of variety in enemies to fight. There are two distinct classes of opponents here which are military and infected. There are 7 or 8 different types of infected, most of which dont really get a lot of spotlight or attention thus i'm thinking they just kind of dissappear in all the chaos. The military get about the same level of variety. Generally speaking, you're isolated to one group or the other so thats probably why people dont notice the variety of both as much. As you progress through the game, the two tend to mix more often. You can even use run tactics to brush pursuers off on the opposing team because it's always a free-for-all between Alex, the military and the infected.

The only honest gripe i have with this game is the control can be a little to liberal at times and this will especially come to light if you try to complete some of those challenges. Particularly timed events with races and such on rooftops, its a pain in the ass if you accidentally air dash just barely off target because you end up 30ft out of the way forcing you to start over the event.
 
I really just can't get wrapped up in these 2. If I want awesome stealth, combat, and environment navigation neither of these compares to Batman: Arkham Asylum. Now that game was fuckin amazing.

Problem with prototype for me was every battle was an easy mash fest or inversely a run and poke experience. I never felt like I was up in someones face and accomplishing something interesting. It was "where's my shiny move button?" on the peons or hiding with a machine gun till something scary made me move. It never felt clever.
