Rock General Discussion

I only get kicked for that name like half the time! The other half is for not having a mic. :<

Well, it was awhile back, so I don't really remember. I don't believe so. I was more miffed about losing than anything you did on your end.

...And yes, people are sticklers for mics in player matches. I don't really bother anymore - I can't understand people through the cruddy headset, and I'm naturally shy anywho, so it's just not for me.

I usually just listen to music and I always forget where I left my mic anyway. It's impossible to actually hear the mic conversations through my speakers, especially if I've got headphones on.

Back on the subject of Rock, I've run out of new ideas. Just need to keep hammering away at those basics now. Even though I've been putting more work into Mina lately, people still say my Rock is much better. :I

To be fair, it's much easier to pressure people with Rock than with Mina once you've got his moveset down. Crouching, standing, lying down - no matter what yer doin' he's got the tools to bust you up. Meanwhile, almost everything Mina does leaves her at frame disadvantage, so she always has to be keeping people at a distance. Rock and Mina's play styles couldn't be much further apart, really. One's "I'm up in your face!" and the other's "Get the hell out of my face!"

I actually tend to do better with Rock than my Lizardman now, and that actually kinda makes me sad. I do love Rock - I mean, who can't love someone so unabashedly manly? - but Lizardman's been my main since 2, and seeing him fall out of favor is just... :|

your rock is better i watched your recent vids... i think you lack certain understanding with mina to make her effective... and i think with rock since he's got less options you are more focused on what you wanna achieve.... which makes you play him better

I agree with LAU, page. I like your Mi-na and like seeing your vids, but I like watching your Rock much more. I've seen some matches where you just bulldozed the shit outta people with him. I never used the guy, but I happen to think he's awesome. Dude's got charisma.

hi Page! I enjoy watching both you and Lau play Rock (anyother rocks are fun to watch too). I learned plenty of stuff to help me up my game for sure.

But when considering trying to find something new---I gotta suggest trying out jf dash after block and see if that works. It may be very helpful against hilde, Mina, Nightmare, Siegfried and Astaroth especially since they have moves that are designed to fling people back. And, some moves that have nice frame disadvantage---woooooo! If you haven't already, feel free to check out my post:

Another point. I'd agree with Lau. But Page deserves more credit than that. He seems to study/know Rock well and his fighting style matches with what Rock has to offer fairly nicely. Not just Rock's limited moveset but also our efforts and inner Rock.

====== DOUBLE POST AUTO-MERGE ======
Yes, I have and do. I still enjoy messing around with her, even though I'm handicapping myself with a character that's already disadvantaged in many situations. Most of the time the difference isn't game-deciding, though.

Fair enough. Sounds like lag would be the game braking thing; not usually limitations provided by CAS ^^. But I only played offline and when I first started using CAS rock, I was thinking "noooooo son of a!" I love using dash with Rock (yeah here I go again xD)and CAS Rock has a gimped dash O_O. Hence my personal decision is to use the real Rockie.

Here are some stuff i've been working on lately.....

6[A+B] i found a place to use it... however not sure if it's worth it...

if you get 1B+G or 3A+G and the opponent is near wall.... 6[A+B] is a force block.. if they don't block... you'll get free ground throw again

it seems to work better with 3A+G... however this is only preliminary testing...... a wall/ring edge is needed to prevent them from ACing to the back.. if they try to do it to the sides.. it seems like they must stand to block..... this is pretty good so far for variations with some of your ground throw stuff.. but you're really trading this frame advantage thing for 22B on ground hit damage... so it's really up to you.

--------------
I've also been working on purposely doing the wrong ground throw.... I'm not sure if you guys know but I've known this for awhile.. hwoever not exactly sure HOW much advantage...

first of all 1A+G/B+G throw seems to be either faster or recover faster (or both) compared to 3A+G/B+G

if you do something like 3B -> 3A+G you get pretty good advantage......

however if you do CH 6K -> 1B+G and you're near wall and you do A+G..... you get so much frame advantage you get a side throw......... this reminds me of 'post NM A+G throw situation' (note to hotnikkelz ;))

you might think i'm kinda ridiculous for wasting some guarantee ground throw stuff for something that's not guaranteed.... however side throw damage >>>>>>> ground throw damage (unless you get the throw chain going).... not to mention... usually from my experience when someone gets hit by the wrong ground throw their first reaction is to get up by pressing guard and is prepared to attack.. but they completely unaware that they'll get thrown again for and forget to break throws.

more to come.

Wow nice info LAU.
Here's sth I recently discovered.

2B+G -> JFDash (Rock is now BT) -> G -> GT
Or instead of GT you can do 4A+B or delayed CT as techtrap.

Is there a tech trap guide anywhere around here? I kinda wanna see if i'm missing any myself and see if i can contribute more

-LAU

Yes. However, it never migrated over from cf.com

There are three speeds of tech traps. Speed 1 (Fast), Speed 2 (Normal) and Speed 3 (Slow)

Speed 1 Setups: B+K (Grounded Hit), [B+K], 3B (weak speed 1), 44K CH, 22_88B, 6[A+B] CH; 2B+G, 63214B+G JF, 6B CH (strong speed 1)
Speed 1 Traps: Head first ground throw, 4A+B, crouch throw, 3B (misses if teched to the side), 1K
Comments: Anything that results in 4A+B and or head first ground throws is the fastest tech trap. It is the strongest type.

Speed 2 Setups: Speed 1 setups, 6K CH, 4A, 4KA CH, 6AA CH, 11, 11B CH (weak speed 2), 11K, 4A+B (strong speed), 6B+K
Speed 2 Traps: Feet first ground throws, crouch throws
Comments: Anything that guarantees a foot first ground throw is a Speed 2. These are Rock's most abundant traps.

Speed 3 Setups: Speed 1 setups, Speed 2 Setups, 4B CH, FC3K, Parry, 1A, 22_88K, 11_77K
Comments: The only thing that hits is a crouch throw. Your mix-ups are crouch throws or ground throws and 1K. They are the riskiest traps and should not be relied on.

D:

that's very informative.. you should make a seperate thread on this....

it might get a little confusing because you don't mention any timing but i think the stuff you mentioned is like very accurate from my test...

the ONLY one i can add from the list is...

1A (near wall) -> 4A+B is possible.

and i have a feeling....

if you do A+G near wall but no splat... if they tech SLOWLY (not like fastest possible time) (due to psyche/reaction time) CT might tech trap....

I got a final. Will do that later in the weekend. Until then, feel free to copy/paste/plagiarize information.

Note, you won't get the full Rock-It-Science flow chart until after Evo. There's some stuff not worth sharing just yet. I'll hopefully test it against some good players tomorrow who are also going to Evo. If it works, it stays in the vault. If it doesn't, I'll post it tomorrow after I get killed.

i'm not going to evo.. but if you need more tips and stuff... i've been working on rock like crazy lately... best way is probably msn.... or else PM me.... msn = stevensonlau@hotmail.com

I tried some stuff yesterday, like JF dashing LIKE CRAZY! It worked. I've been approaching Rock like a flow chart Rock. So if you want to add to the flow chart, that would be great. I'll post a flow chart after Evo. It should be about 2-3 posts long (yes, there's that much). Maybe. It's definately less scrubby than the Ken flow chart(s).

Edit: on second thought, I might post the flow chart, just to have it read through and editted.

It's a shame you're only NOW DOING THAT GIVEN THAT LAU AND I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME FOR SO LONG, TELLING OTHER ROCK PLAYERS TO DO IT.

tsk tsk...draco....tsk tsk.
