Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

One funny thing I notice that people totally forget/ignore when discussing Tifa in a weapon based fighting game, is that in the original game she was in, she had a buttload of weapons. Gloves and fist weapons, to be sure, but it's not like she punched things with "bear arms"

I mean, you can't really say Valeria was weaponless because she had SHOES, now, can you? Just a little thought~

Y'all know Shoes > Gloves

Lol sure. That's definitely what people think when they see her. Also, we already have enough virtuous people. I'd rather see more "evil" female characters. Besides that, where is her weapons?
Look, it's just not reasonable to write off every female character just because there are sad little losers who like to sit around fetishizing them and turning them into art work that is 90% mammaries.... Treating the very idea of femininity as something that has to revolve around the sad sexual obsessions of tumblr (or wherever those weebs congregate these days), such that we begin to question anybody who ever advances the idea of a female character is just not on, I'm sorry guys. For anybody who says "I just don't think anybody wants to see her for anything but her tits", I have to suggest that you start hanging out with a better and more mature class of person, because that is not a normal or healthy reaction to suggesting some more female representation.

Because if that's someone's immediate response to such a suggestion in any context, it means one of two things is going on: either A) there is some bias in yourself that you are psychologically transposing on to others, such that you have to reduce their enthusiasm for any female character to a sexual obsession, or else B) the people around you during most of the time that you talk about media are mostly tedious creeps who have completely lowered your expectations of people far below where they should be, and you need to reevaluate where and with whom you spend your time. I repeat: simply suggesting a female character be added to a game should not be met with "Duuuuurr, boobies!! It's all about the boobies!" I mean, it can't be denied that gaming fandom has its share of creeps, but most people are capable of appreciating female characters and their designs on levels other frantic fapping...... I mean, most of us grow out of being attracted to cartoon and video game characters at a very early age, or never did have that preoccupation (I mean who spends their entire life fantasizing about fictious drawn characters, really?)... Anyway, Tifa was a stack of rough-angled polygons when many of us first became familiar with her as a character, lol--there's nothing sexy in that!

As to weapons, I thought I was clear before that her bringing a brawler style to the game is a selling point, not a detraction, as I see it. I liked the last two brawlers, even with Heihachi's 2G deficit in HDO, and I'd happily take another. I'd be nearly as happy with Kazuya or some other Tekken stand-in, but Tifa would be the ideal, checking a lot of boxes: satisfies the guest spot (there will certainly be one if there is a season three), has a style that would synergize well with SC mechanics, and adds a brawler to the roster. Win-win-win, at least by my standards.

All of that said, I'm open to more nefarious characters as well, but who would you have in mind that is a member of a currently hot property that would make for a good licensing deal between Namco and some other big player? I'm trying to think of who that would be. There haven't been a many big budget games with female anti-heroes lately, not that I can recall anyway. Then again, I'm barely keeping up with industry developments right now.

While you aren’t wrong, RB, the unfortunate problem is that Tifa has a certain reputation and legacy on the internet, regardless of how true it is, that there are such attributions to her “character” that aren’t really avoidable. For example, when her Remake self was revealed, there was much fuss about her sports bra, her proportions, and there’s a new obsession with her thigh highs bringing a new level to her attraction factor, due to the concept of “zettai ryouiki”, a Japanese phenomena where apparently, the tiny amount of flesh seen on the thighs between the socks and the hem of the skirt is apparently the sexiest thing ever. Not that there is not a sizable portion of perversion worldwide, but Japan, in and of itself, provides enough of their own to give a certain aura to its female characters, warranted or not.

The only good thing about Tifa in the game is that I could use his moveset and make Valeria and a new long hair for CaS would be good. As I mentioned, I never played FF, so I have no 'nostalgic' feeling for any of them.
I actually have an even better idea for that. Somewhile back, someone here (I think in the DLC thread) suggested Miriam of 'Bloostained: Ritual of the Night' as a good guest candidate. That actual led me to looking into that game, which I bought and played the mother-loving hell out of during a couple slow lockdown weeks. What a great metroidvania and action game. Going in to it, I thought the idea of transposing Miriam into SC sounded problematic, because she has no default weapon set, but actually a huge selection of weapons and spells. But at this point, I don't even care how feasible it is, or whether she would make for a good marketing option: I just love thinking about the possibility. And I think it could be pretty dang awesome if done thoughtfully.

First off, she would have to be multi-weapon, but as Ezio has shown, these styles can work in the SC format. And here we start out on great news: one of Miriam's countless classes of weapons is....a grieve edge! I mean, down to the fine details of the shapes of the boot and blades, it's pretty much Valeria's grieve edge. Ok, so great start there: you roll some gireve edge animations. into the moveset. Next, I think you give her a light sword (and of course you change the exact sword in her CaS options, but you find a pastiche of moves that represents the movement forms from Bloodstained). Miriam also packs light pistols, so maybe you throw in some Ezio-crossbow inspired flavour into the mix. You're gonna wanna give her four or five of her 70 spells too, and I'm thinking Blood Drain (since it is kind of an iconic move for her) and Welcome Company (a ring of possessed portraits that spins around her, providing defense and offense).

And shit, there's only about 15 other classes of weapon you could use with her, and you could cram quite a few in if you found some way to adapt her build shards into the game; in Bloodstained, you slowly accrue the ability to have up to eight separate builds that you can jump between on the fly with the push of a bumper. eight would obviously be excessive here, but maybe two or three, operating essentially as stances, but which cause her weapons and moveset to drastically change. I mean, it would be difficult to keep her from becoming OP and there are other potential problems, but I can't help by revel in the idea. Even if she just had the boots, the sword and the pistol, and her standard outfit, and a couple of spells....that could just be a beautful moveset. And picking from the option would be like being in a candy store for a PS moveset designer. Yeah, I'm a full-on convert to this idea: I gotta go back and check who first proposed it.

While I agree that there's no reason in principle that both cannot be accomodated, the lateness with which they are adding the first of them makes me worry we are getting only Hwang, and the Yun fans are destined for heartbreak.
I think with all the information we have Project Soul's plan is pretty clear at this point.
Some time ago we had a codename leak with 6 names: Stone, Yell, Star, Snow, Reptile and Yellow. At the time we didn't quite know what to make of it, but by now it's obvious. Those are 6 original SC characters, in other words the exact number of original SC characters 2 seasons of content would bring. Guests are not listed in this particular leak at all.
So we know Yell = Hilde, Snow = Setsuka (confirmed to be the next Season 2 character with a different separate leak), Yellow = Hwang (confirmed to be the last Season 2 character with a different separate leak).
That leaves us with Star (obviously Yun-Seong), Reptile (obviously Aeon) and Stone (obviously Rock).
Another hint is the character popularity poll from way back. According to it Yun-Seong is the 14th most popular character in the franchise, that is more popular than every original SC character from Season 2 (Setsuka, Hwang and Hilde) and also more popular than many vanilla roster characters. In that case, why the hell are we getting Hwang and not Yun-Seong in Season 2? We are getting Hwang instead of Yun-Seong in Season 2, because Yun-Seong is supposed to be a major selling point of Season 3, they are basically saving the best for last. If there was no Season 3, there would have been no Hwang in Season 2, period.
Also consider the order in which characters are released, Hwang will be the last Season 2 character, I bet his story mode will end with a giant Yun-Seong teaser (because obviously those two characters are connected), seamlessly leading us into Season 3. We might even see Yun-Seong's new character design preview in Hwang's story.
I also predict Yun-Seong will be the very first character of Season 3, unknown guest will be the second (as always they want to release guests as soon as possible, but are never able to finish an entirely new moveset in time to open a season with), Aeon and Rock will be the last two, no idea in what order (the order also doesn't really matter in that case).

Yeah, I remember how unglued a certain portion at the internet became of the mere suggestion that her bust could possibly be reduced in size or freedom of movement...that was a depressing day to be a member of the gaming community at large. But I refuse to be deprived of genuine art in design just because of the army of man-children out there. I'm taking her back! Tifa's a class act, I don't care what some emotionally and mentally stunted fanboy did to her on Pornhub. F**k that guy--f**k them all collectively. They don't get to redefine the artistic accomplishments of others with their obsessive fixations. This is who Tifa is to me: Monty got it and I'm not going to let some little weeb with too much time on his hands and too little shame in his heart take that away from me. Just ignore it.

If PS wants give me a 'sexy waifu' or whatever like this, I accept Baiken or Tamaki.

When I saw Baiken I'm looking and say "another boob wh0r3" but I use her in arcade, she is awesome character, I really enjoy her moveset. I don't play DOA (and don't have any intention to do this) but her default outfit is cool, reminds Setsuka 2P in SC3.

It was actually me who suggested it..
Well, good call! I owe you for bringing the game to my attention: I really got my money's worth out of that $20! And I have to admit, I was far too quick to dismiss that concept; after playing that game to near completionism, I think the idea has immense merit. And I'm not sure that's a guest that makes sense for Namco, but shit, I wanna suggest it to them--Haohmaru proves that crazy things can happen with characters who come from less than AAA sources.

Yeah, I think you are probably right on most of that, aside from some of the smaller details: I think the "leaks" were intentional; I'm dubious about the importance of that poll; and I'd tend to anticipate Rock as the first Season 3 character. But in general I think the codenames do represent exactly who you suggest they do, and that this tends to increase the liklihood Yun-seong will be added. Buuuut, I don't know, they've surprised me before with the continuing support. I did not (as you well know, since it was a part of our bet) believe that Hilde was coming so soon (I guess she was "Yell"? That still seems odd to me).

So I'm still not sure I would consider anyone locked as yet. Here's my best guess as to the next six characters (assuming there is a season 3 of four characters): Setsuka, Hwang, Rock, Guest #4, Aeon, Yun-seong. But I wouldn't be shocked if Yun-seong was bumped for Li Long, or an earlier introduction of Algol or Viola in the new continuity. Do I think any of those three are likely? No, not really. But there's enough doubt in my mind that I wouldn't be shocked to death to see YS bumped for some crazy final selection.

I disagree. Aeon first, then Rock, because Aeon will need to be an opponent for Rock, and it would be better to fight the real deal than Lesser Lizardman.
Makes sense. From the story perspective it is definitely better to get Aeon before Rock.
I said it didn't matter because I was mainly looking at things from a marketing perspective there and from that angle there was no difference. I should have considered other perspectives.

The truth of the matter is that we cannot avoid titillation of female characters, regardless of the role they play in their specific environment so we shouldn't even bother ourselves with discussion about character being a good pick in that context.
I would love to see Baiken in this game but that would be such an overlap (yet another katana wielding character) so I wouldn't see her as a good pick. Personally I don't see a better pick than Tifa as of now
