Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Reading over Hayate's doc they sent in to Project Soul, I was surprised about how negative it is on the general system and mechanics. I'm curious who else has been able to send in opinions, I wouldn't want them to think that's reflective of the entire community. Like that's the first time I've seen someone down on the gameplay speed. I really hope they don't make things slower.

My biggest annoyance with 4 was trying to make a character I liked the look of while also getting the abilities I wanted. Enjoyed the roster, and the "slowness" was noob friendly, which made getting others to play with me easier.

LOL Sophitia and her leg bent poses and her feminine shield attacks, nope I can't do it!

At least Amy's only real questionable thing was her kick and win pose haha
Pyrrha's was even worse LOL Well, for male characters anyway lol

Yeah sc6 faces are bad in comparison to sc4, the artstyle is horrible and faces look like dollys
Honestly I actually like Talim's SC6 face, makes her look less anime though to be fair, I really detested the art direction the series went in after Soul Calibur 3 where they made the characters look more like anime characters than a mixing of fantasy with slight realism. I noticed this when I examined Taki and Xianghua's faces comparing their SC2-3 faces to SC4. In SC4, Taki does not look Japanese to me at all and Xianghua didn't look Chinese to me neither. But uh yeah, that's just my opinion.

Anyway, I think Talim's face looks fine lol

Not me. I don't want Amy I want Amy's style. Doing what you suggest gets me nothing I want. Is why the Raph people are likewise upset at the idea of Raph with Amy's style.

Yeah I always preferred Amy's playstyle over Raphael's but I wouldn't want to see Raphael with her playstyle, it just wouldn't suit him. I highly doubt Amy is going to be a playable character in SC6 and at the most, we'll see her make a cameo in Raphael's story but if all else, I would not be opposed to having her style donated to CAS for this game (Along with Viola's as well). Because if all else, it at least adds some styles to CAS without ruining the atmosphere the game is trying to go with (SC1-SC2) with the main cast.

Exactly, I said the same thing on Gamefaqs and received a few critisms for it lol.

Everyone's opinion is valid, and pro players shouldn't be reflective of the whole community as you said.

I really hope they dont slow it down, make it less flashy and remove moves.

Soul Calibur 4's Character creation was the weakest in my opinion. The stats thing was super cumbersome because you could make a character that looks awesome but they'd have piss poor stats. But not only that, I hate how they limited layering clothing as they combined and glued belts and pants as one item and chest armor and shirts as one item. It just made for boring combinations and I found myself using the same items more than once like Ivy's "Belle Skirt", Cassandra's "Atlanta Jacket", Zasalamel's "Death Cuissae Pants", and Raphael's "Duelist Boots" to name a few. It also didn't help that some of the main cast's 2-player costumes didn't really look all that pleasing on custom characters in terms of alteration like for example, Hilde's Princess dress & Setsuka's Frilled Skirt were depicted as floor-length but on custom characters, it rides up to their ankles. Or how Raphael's jacket was depicted as slim-fitting on him but bulky on custom characters. And don't get me started on how we couldn't even color all the pieces on certain 2-player outfits on custom characters (SCV did this too... -___- )

So yeah, while I was able to make a few neat creations in SC4, it definitely was lacking compared to SC3 and thank goodness SC5 brought back layering lol

Same, I seriously hope that they retain the gameplay speed of Soul Calibur 5 because as disappointing as that game was, they totally nailed the gameplay speed making it match Soul Calibur 2 & Soul Calibur 3's.

Yeah but 4 had that cute updo that 5 lacked. I missed that hairstyle so much. The cute little dangleys framed the face perfectly.

Damn SCIV was blurry as hell
Project Soul did a poor job deciding on the game's rendering resolution for the Xbox 360 version (which I took screenshots from). Rather than going with 1280x720 with AA (which most games did at the time) they decided to make the game render at 1365x960 and let the Xbox hardware scale it down to 1280x720. This reduces aliasing but it makes the image quality extremely blurry.

PS3 version looks much clearer (though with apparent aliasing), and you can get insanely good image quality in an emulator:

Oh man I remember the "Updo" hairstyle (it came from Setsuka's 2-Player) Yeah, I was so disappointed that they didn't bring that hairstyle back. You know, I don't know why they didn't just keep all the 1-Player / 2-Player hairstyles from Soul Calibur 4 and included them in Soul Calibur 5. I mean why not? They could've been left as a customization items for CAS and they were running on the same Unreal Engine 4 system I believe so it's not like they couldn't have easily transferred them over. I mean they brought back Taki's Ponytail so I mean... Gah, just another reason why SCV was lacking with the DLC content lol

I didn't know there was an emulator for PS3 lol

Oh, I didn't quite say that. I think pro players should have most of the weight in terms of game design, but I just think they should be casting a wide net of pro's opinions, and a lot of the comments in that doc appeared short-sighted.

For instance, if the speed was toned down, with run counters and strong defensive options, the balance between offense and defense would probably be skewed heavily to one side. The stronger all options are the more freedom people will have in terms of how they want to play.

Give one Preparation stance the ability to move sideways.

And Vurkolak Envelopment should have new moves otherwise it isn't necessary.

Uh, Verkolak Envelopment IS his lateral preparation movement stance. Or at least was, in SCIV. They need to just bring it back as it was in SCIV, it was a very good stance.

Also, giving Raphael a sideways equivalent to his preparation stance would defeat the spirit of the character. His horizontal game is deliberately weak due to the design of his weapon. You learn Raphael with that understanding, and as you gain experience, you learn to compensate by making plays that make you less vulnerable.

Is me or her lower hand is a bit big and weird? Also, the upper hand fingers looks so long. Maybe I'm wrong.

They kinda do look a bit big sseeing it up close lol But hopefully they'll scale things down in the final build. That or maybe it's just some weird camera thiing. The characters hand's always looked awkward holding weapons in their win animations with the exception of a few characters like Sophitia and Siegfried.

good point

There is something wrong with their 2 sizes. Either Taki is scaled down or Talim is scaled too large.

This screenshot makes Talim's skull to be about 15% larger than Taki's (the hat and her hair style really does this as well, and she's got really long lower leg proportionately for someone who is supposed to be under 5 feet tall.

Its simply worth mentioning Taki is 2nd tallest woman in the series and we know Talim appeals to those who wish to play as the cute little girl tropes.

I simply can't tell and it actually is unsettling (I get that its fun in video games when you can battle as giant golems or little girls, but the proportions are so jarring).

For comparison I attach the following:
Both the talims have the same proportions, and I simply scaled one up 15% (the default scaling is completely arbitrarily by me) compared to the Taki in the middle. Something seems off to me

I recognize this has happened in ALL previous soul calibur games for the sake of gameplay, but I thought it was only me until others have pointed that out.
