Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

What's even the point of a random select slot anyway? they could easily just make a button on the controller do random select.

A proper mimic character can at least show up in the story mode and such, it'd be better to have the mimic on the roster in place of the random slot and have the random select just be a normal button.

With 23 character slots I really don't want a minic, I would also prefer Inferno to be a secret alternitive skin for Nightmare because lets be honest, apart from Cervantes Inferno looks damn weird using anyone elses fighting style. Also AFAIK no one uses mimics in tournaments anyway. Let's leave the novelty characters like mimics at the back of the queue.

Personally, I actually like a single mimic for the reasons he mentioned. It's why I appreciated Edge Master in SCV, considering after a while I picked up use of every character at some point or another and just kinda went with improving with them. But, I may be weird for that. That said, having a mimic as a slot would be better than the random button, if only considering they could make random a separate input on the screen like DOA5:LR did. As of that being a thing, I no longer see value in a random button taking up what could be a roster slot for another character, mimic or otherwise.

Suppose to also make a point with my favor of mimic over random, random giving you a single character for the full match doesn't also require you to be ready to deal with a potentially very unfavorable matchup in 1 or more rounds as much as there's a chance for a favorable matchup. Can't say I'm bothered either way since it seems the roster is unlikely to be anything to really worry about, but it's an interesting point to be made.

If they bring back team battle, we need a mimic (and allow you to keep choosing it for the whole team). 8v8 mimics is a lot of fun.

The random button isn't taking up a character slot. Removing it wouldn't increase the size of the roster.

And after playing Legendary Souls in SCV recently, Edge Master can STAY out.

It's not about roster size, It's that there's really no need to put it on a character select screen in general. It could be replaced with a more interesting extra option like a slot for pre-made CAS bonus characters (with the ones who show up in the story like presumably Rothion).

Or if there's another CAS-dedicated style like the SCIII ones and Devil Jin in SCV they could have a pre-made CAS default for it so it can be on the roster properly (or even let you make the default character for that slot, that would be fun), something like that.

By all means, random definitely isn't taking up a slot. Was more-so just pointing out that the random button in DoA was turned into a character slot and made into a feature, which puts that into the realm of possibility they could do down the road if need be, should they do more than 1 season of DLC.

From an aesthetic point of view the random select just looks off on a character select screen filled with faces and their personalities. So in that sense yes it is taking up a slot for a character like Edgemaster who could fill and do exactly what the random button already does without the commitment of having to play the same character throughout the match. Edgemaster is a person and has lore. Random select does not.

And if you dont want to select Edgemaster for whatever reason then pressing a button random selects for you. I would prefer this way better. But thats just from a design point of view.

Seong-Mina was in Soul Edge in the arcade version and was Korean. There was no attempt at appeasement here. Arthur was the one who was created with the sole intent of of appeasement. And only in the Korean arcades.

Please don’t look at any character or any other character not named Arthur as an attempt at appeasement. Characters and styles were brought because they wanted to be, not for any other reason. Once again we’ve had Korean representation in every Soul game since the first. On,y SCV dropped the Korean characters.
"Catering to" is NOT the same thing as "appeasing." Former is "this will appeal to X audience" and the latter is "X audience will complain unless we do this."

Tekken was (and is) huge in Korea.

Namco was trying to reproduce this success with SoulCalibur.

They did this by adding Korean characters. First with Mina, then with Hwang, and lastly with Yun.

That's all I'm pointing out.

Oh, now the poll matters? lol
The poll's importance has never been a yes-or-no question, it's a matter of degrees. It is, after all, one entry in a larger pool of data points. Some characters like Astaroth or Voldo are obviously always going to be in regardless of fleeting popularity trends. However, for questions involving more obscure characters (such as "is Setsuka more popular than Seong-Mina?") we have fewer data points to work with, so the poll can help us make a more informed guess.

It should obviously be taken with a grain of salt (Talim is obviously not more popular than Nightmare), since only a certain type of person would a) find the poll, and b) feel inclined to respond. As such, these types of data tend to only represent a small subset of the larger player base, but that doesn't mean it's entirely useless. If anything, it becomes more and more useful as the characters left to be revealed become increasingly niche.

I guess we have to thank sc5 for the, understandable, hate that mimics receive.

Anyway i liked Olcadan, because he actually tought you something.
I'd like to see him and his tutorial again.
But only if i also get Mina and Lizzy too of course :D

I also put in my ideal picks and predictions for the final roster come launch.

This is to show how much better and complete the character select screen would look if the random select slot was instead a mimic character (preferably Edgemaster). Random select is moved to a button. Best of both worlds.

  • 2B was, along with Geralt, the obvious choice for a guest character. She's a popular character from a popular game, has been pushed by some rather influential voices in the FGC directly to the producers of the game (including Kayane and Maximilan), and would fit decently well with the aesthetics of the series. Okubo's comments at E3 made it pretty clear that we can expect at least one additional guest character as DLC, and 2B from Nier makes by far the most sense.
Something else to add is that Nier: Automata was recently released on XboX One. Having her be a guest on SCVI would, in a way, help promote that version of Automata.

Castlevania would be more of a TV tie in at this point, though not necessarily a bad one, seeing as Season 2 of the Netflix show is out just after SCV.

Plus, with Spawn and Star Wars, is not as if SC is averse to non-VG guests.

TBH I was always split on the SiegHild pair. With Salia in the equation I can't see them nothing more as best friends. IDK.

Everthing could change in the reboot as well for the other three 'canon' pairs. (The most canon one you mentioned crashed, the other two are really ambiguous at best. Let us see how things play out from here.)

Edit: Surprisingly what came to my mind is that Li Long/Chie is the only canon pair that actually had a happy ending and this is actually a sweet surprise seeing how Li Long hasn't been in a main SC game for a long time. SophRoth crashed too in a more brutal fashion than KilikXianghua.
That reminded me of another reason how and why SCV fumbled being a timeskip sequel. Not only did it not include one established character that made perfect sense to be playable when they were older (Bangoo) but they didn't bother including Li Long and Chie's son Riki.... who could have used some kind of unique moveset (three-sectioned staff or even sai) but instead went with Taki replacement Naruto reference Natsu, whom Chie also raised. It's just painful to think how badly they botched that.
At least including Riki and Natsu would have softened the Natsu blow somewhat.

...but knowing our luck, Riki would've probably wound up being the Sasuke to her Naruto or something awful like that knowing the development team back then. rofl
