Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

For some reason Tekken characters will only grunt and never speak during combat (unlike Soul calibur). Has this changed ?

Oh come on, let's not be that cruel. Nobody else loved SC2's Cervantes "COME with MEEE to HEEEELLLLLL" line? Mind, ever since 3 I always just set japanese voices since most of the time we just can't listen to the english ones, true, and japanese VA are usually just better... AND they butchered the line in SC3..

But yeah, there are some legit diamonds in the rough to be found.

I'm not a game developer, and know almost nothing about the process.

However.

I'm pretty sure switching to a whole new engine (UE4) means Project Soul can't simply "copy and paste" from previous titles.
I don't like using the term "copy and paste" as it's never that simple, but they can still reuse almost all assets after switching to a new engine. If they're able to reuse the same animation skeletons as previous SC games (which I think they are since the animations seem to be deforming the meshes the exact same way) then they can reuse all animations, meshes, rigs, and textures if they want. They'd need to convert all of that stuff but UE4 comes with tools to convert from standard formats so I don't think that step would be a big challenge.

I don't want to downplay Namco's efforts too much. Using a new engine definitely comes with a lot of unique challenges. The only thing which makes me think "Really?" is the hair, everything else I think looks fine. But I'm really baffled they're re-using hair models which were designed to be rendered with a smooth alpha.

Im pretty sure ALL the character models are new. Just look at the faces. The hair is too. Campare them side by side if need be (with the highest quality resolution u can find). And ever since 2 Ive thought SC had some if THE best voice acting in any fighter.
Cass in SCII particularly but also III, Seigfried and Maxi are also very fun to quote.
(Especially that "Goddamn Freak" line from SCV lol)
Ive honestly NEVER heard anyone bitch about SCs voices.
I've been comparing characters to previous games as they're revealed and there's usually some pretty blatant asset reuse. Some quick examples...

Ivy's hair mesh and texture look the same:

Ivy's weapon looks to be using the same mesh and texture:

Zasalamel looks to be using the same face mesh (though tweaked a little). The little you see of his weapon looks to be the same mesh:

But for the most part, I think that's fine. If they decided to reuse some assets to save time and spend more time making new assets, then I'm completely fine with it. Especially with CAS I think it makes perfect sense to reuse assets as that lets them start off with a similar quantity of customization items as SC5 and then they can add to that.

The only thing I wish they would have done differently is the hair. They're not even trying to hide how bad it looks in official screenshots:

I honestly find the in-game models and English voice acting to be topnotch. Besides I don't mind if they do reuse some old assets making this game. The game so far looks gorgeous and Ivy and Mitsu look young so this proves they are not being lazy.

For the voices is good as well. I honestly have nothing wrong with them.

Eliza, Bob (I think), Claudio, Lucky Chloe, M.raven, and Hei speak during combat. If you count guests so does Noctis, Geese, and Akuma.
Some char speak when starting their rage art.

I would never consider any of the voice acting in any SC game good. Even in games where it's been better, it's never been good. It's always just kind of hit a level of acceptable. Not bad enough for you to notice, not good enough for you to notice. It's just there, and always has been. More of a fighting game issue than anything else because the actors are often forced to deliver many lines without any context of interaction with another character.

But Von Blackhardt! What are so examples of good voice acting in games? I dunno, Dark Souls. God of War. Hellblade. If you haven't seen what else is out there, it's easy to think that what this franchise pumps out is good. I'm not knocking it though, I have literally no problem with the voice acting in Soul Calibur, and from what I've heard, 6 is fine. It gets the job done.

Also, mentality? They are going to reuse assets. As many as they can - we all saw those images of Sophitia's sword floating out of her hand. If them reusing assets hasn't ruined the game yet, it's probably not about to. Just walk it off, man. I'm sure Bamco will eventually give us a much better hill to die on. I do think the hair looks kind of like shit though. Maybe they'll sort it out, maybe they won't.

While I do see the similarities in the hair quality I am going to hold off on judgment until we see a new build that isn't from god knows how long ago. If I don't get some Ivy gameplay soon I'm going to shed my human form, take wing, and raze the countryside......

I mentioned Harada being present at combo breaker in hopes of Okubo being present also.

But yes, Harada is not involved in SC and hasn’t been since SCIV.

Hmm..on the topic of reused assets Its definitely not ruining my hype and I can deal with it. ( I've been waiting since like 2013 for this game, trust me some reused assets isn't taking away my hype for it. ) ...With that said though I think people are 100% valid with their criticism of Ps reusing 10 year old assets. And some of them like some of the hair looks...bad!

My biggest worry about reused assets is some of the CaS items fit so horribly they were basically unusable and it means they may not incorporate needed changes to CaS such as a butt slider.

On one hand, reused means they can recycle and add to all the old stuff, on the other hand starting over would mean they might be able to get it more right and not have such problems.

Models are easily ported from engine to engine (if not then mods in UE4 would be impossible). We also see that animations and skeletons are ported, too, which is easily seen by Sophie's 66B having the same animation error since SC.
Even if the voice acting can get grating due to the characterizations that some characters undertake (read: Xianghua and Leixia), it becomes noise in the background once you, y'know, actually start playing the game for what it is.
If you think voices aren't noticeable when actually playing the game, you aren't paying enough attention.

Harada was either producer or director on SCV.

The truth has been spoken.
I think that English performances suffer because the communication between actors and directors is lacking something that people in Japan have.

I hate Astaroth's and Cervantes's voices the most. Good thing I understand Japanese, so I don't have to tolerate that crap.
