Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Alright, so I've collected my thoughts and have a few things to say. First, general comments:
  • Loving the new stages. The meadow stage is gorgeous, the sand effect in the desert stage is some of the best-looking sand I've ever seen in a video game, and Kaer Morhen looks better than in the Geralt trailer. It's also good to finally get a confirmation that the burning stage is Ostrheinsburg Castle, a classic location in the series and quite important to the lore. Also, Indian Port is huge!
  • That new UI is sexy. I'd gotten used to the sketch-styled lifebars, but I was never really a big fan and I'm glad to see a much nicer interface overall. Little touches like the swords in the KO message add some much needed flare, and the fact that they're complementing the woodcut-engraving aesthetic with actual wooden surfaces brings it all together quite nicely.
  • The character select looks darker overall too, and it looks a lot better that way. Extra points for displaying the amazing 2D artwork before choosing a character, implemented exactly the way I envisioned it. It makes it look a whole lot more polished and honestly could be the best looking character select screen to date in my book.
  • On the topic of the selection screen, more slots! I'm glad they decided to increase the character count, even if just by three. Having ten characters left to be revealed instead of seven sure makes speculating a lot more fun.
  • There's also those suspicious white circles by the lower corners... unlockables, or DLC? Some speculate that they might be "previous" and "next" buttons to indicate multiple pages, but that sounds far too optimistic and makes little sense considering there's also a random button in the alleged main page. I'm also not sure how that would work with two players choosing characters at the same time. Who knows though? Only time will tell!

Now's the time for some roster speculation! Talim will obviously be the next character to be revealed; Okubo literally just teased her mere hours ago. Voldo and Tira have also been rumored by multiple sources, and are both iconic characters that could generate a lot of hype at a mainstream event like E3. Based on that, I'd wager that's what we're getting tomorrow, along with a newcomer perhaps.

That leaves us with six slots, exactly the remaining number of characters left from the original Soul Calibur! Those characters are Astaroth, Cervantes, Rock, Hwang, Mina, and Lizardman. Given that this is supposed to be a remake of that game, there's certainly a nonzero chance that we get just that. However, if the popularity poll has shown anything is that SC2 introduced some of the most popular characters in the series, including Cassandra, Raphael, and Yun.

Given this conflict, I've come up with two scenarios: the SC1 route, and the mixed route. Both of these assume that CaS will be a slot in the middle that appears once you've made a custom character, and that Groh is the only newcomer in the main roster. Both of these assumptions can be easily overridden, so just replace one or two characters with CaS or a newcomer if you're not feeling as optimistic as I am.

Either way, I doubt tomorrow will allow us to determine which of these is closer to reality, unless we get something completely unexpected like Rock, Setsuka, or Hilde. My personal hope is that we get Cervantes, Rock, Astaroth, Aeon (SCV style) and Raphael. Don't really care about the rest tbh, though Cassandra would be cool.

Regardless, GET HYYYYYYPEEEEE!!1!
Yeah, I'm leaning towards the SoulCalibur 1 roster being the launch release since SoulCalibur VI is supposedly a throwback to the original Dreamcast game. Bandai Namco is also still a business and I'm sure as hell they would be inclined to want to save Cassandra and Yun-seong as either pre-order or paid DLC because they will sell. Having the original SoulCalibur 1 cast thematically makes more sense than mixing it up and would be an homage to the older fans who stuck around for quite a long time while including more original characters such as Talim and Raphael from the more popular SoulCalibur II.

The only difference in my prediction with the SoulCalibur 1 centered roster would be that they would introduce a new character in place of Tira since Tira would more than likely sell more downloads than a new character.

I see a roster that will upset some people. People were upset with newbies replacing the older characters in SCV . SCVI will no doubt have some salt in it.

Here's my roster:

tho i thing the actual screen can be change with character placements in future

I hesitate mostly by if i'd put Lizardman or Hilde, but ended going with Lizardman cause he was in SC1 and since it's a reboot he may have a big importance in story, while Hilde wasn't in SC1 (even tho she can still fit story if they overhaul the whole thing), still i think Hilde will end up being later as DLC. Same for Setsuka as well, and some other characters too. Also i put Yun but it could be Mina instead but in any case i feel one of the them will be in base game then other one later post launch, same for Hwang too but lesser chances compare to other 2 cause he's less popular i feel, but would be awesome if he'll make it too.

Other characters too like Cassandra (I feel she will end make it in some way, such and awesome character and one the best imo), Amy, Rock and more other can end up DLC, especially Cassandra. Those who i personally want mostly are Setsuka and Cassandra the most.

No one is considering a possible (or more) new character , already confirmed by Okubo.

We pretty much know that, guaranteed, there's going to be at least one more new character.

Which pretty much means that the remaining slots are going filled with no more than 9 returners, and if CAS is the bottom left slot opposite of the random selection, then that leaves only 8 slots for returning characters.

Given the time period that this game is taking place, and the fact that we ONLY have 1 confirmed character from SC3 new character list and 1 confirmed character from SC2 new character list (Zasalamel and Talim respectively) We can probably assume they can return to the game. That's about 5 slots (Amy does not count), 3 (Cassandra, Yunsung and Raphael) for SC2, 2 for SC3 (Tira and Setsuka).

That leaves 3 slots left. Cervantes, Astaroth and Voldo have been mainstays to the series since SC1 and are probably the most obvious picks.

Alternatively; given the timeline is SC1/2 then it stands to reason that they can be very selective on who gets brought back for the main roster and simply concentrate on that crew. There were eighteen characters in SC1 (barring Inferno). There are 24 slots, one of which is taken by a random select. Two of which are taken by new characters, Groh and the unamed newcomer, that's 21 slots left. Zasalamel and Talim we know are confirmed to return, that's 19 slots left. CAS is likely also to return and will probably take a slot in the lower left corner, that's 18 slots left. There's also the fact that we have a guest character named Geralt, so we're down to 17 slots left.

Of the current roster from SC1, 10 of them are returning. That leaves 7 slots left. Who is left in SC1 that has yet to be announced? Cervantes, Astaroth, Rock, Voldo, Hwang, Seong Mina, and Lizardman. Seven characters.

I think the left or right directionals will be for DLC characters on one side and Create a Soul on the other.

This allows the central chars to be focused in for tourney play, but gives people stuff to buy and play with on the other sides.

I think there will be as many doc characters as will be profitable to sell. 6, 10, or 18 as long as they all keep selling.

So any guesses as to what Groh's father could be like?

For some reason I think he's going to be some kind of crusader with a one handed morning star that sets his weapon on fire, creating a semi-magical type of character. If he's more of a priest he may keep the weapon but I'm thinking in his other hand is a tome.

And if we assume (minus Geralt at least) characters fight on certain stages during the story mode, here are my current thoughts:

Eurydice Shrine: Sophitia and Cassandra
Snow-Capped Showdown: Mitsurugi and Taki or Groh an Papa Groh
Ornstreinsburg: Nightmare and Siegfried
Proving Grounds: Kilik and Xianghua
Indian Port: Maxi and Cervantes
Meadow: Talim and ????
Desert: Zasalamel and Astaroth
Unseen Forest: Tira and Raphael

A stage suiting Ivy or Voldo/Yoshimitsu (I think they favored the same stages in II and IV) has to be decided upon. Or Mitsurugi gets Kaer Morhen for some reason while Yoshimitsu fights at Snow-Capped Showdown instead.

Some characters had different stages in IV while customizing them though and in II, I doubt Kilik actually fought in the Labyrinth while Nightmare's stage was for Destined Battles.

Otherwise we might get a few stages per character to fight at.

God I remember that day.

The day that the SC5 hype engine catastrophically crashed

Mimic x 3 , Algol + Devil Jin + Alt Pyrrha/Patroklos (these were less bad) when there were other SC4 veterans left in the dust.

Sigh. I sure remember those days and it was bullshit.

Speaking of Algol does anyone want him back? Honestly I don't care much for him and I see him left out in almost all roster speculations.

Despite him being the maker of Soul Calibur I barely see people wanting him back.

No SC6 at Sony conf. WTF.

Are we gonna see it at Nintendo conf. with a confirmation of Switch version? Or maybe could be just during event outside of any conference, Hum...
