Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

I'm all for extending the game with DLC, but let's not release new incompatible versions of the base game with minor enhancements. Unlike the Tira situation I find that to be wholly anti-consumer.
I fucked up... I was recalling SFIV through rose-colored glasses. I agree with your assessment more. :)
Personally, I am okay with some DLC content post-release to keep interest alive. But not to the extent that it's getting milked and starts to seem disingenuous and greedy.
I had somehow forgotten Super Street Fighter IV was incompatible and ended up being a new purchase :p Stuff like that was lousy and milked it too much imo.

The "target audience" is the reason we haven't gotten a new SC in 6 years.

The "target audience" is what made SFV underperform and MvCI bomb.
Being a story-focused fighting game, Soul Calibur's target audience is much larger than just the FGC. There's significant overlap with anime fans, RPG fans, and historical fantasy fans. The only big game competing for any of those markets is is RDR2, and even that is debatable.

Yes, you want to expand your player base as widely as possible, but you have to be realistic and know which kinds of players will ever be interested in your game. The truth is that the overwhelming majority of people who care about mainstream military shooters, and especially Battlefield 5 after the whole controversy surrounding it, were never going to care about a historical-fantasy fighting game with anime aesthetics and RPG elements.

I can understand people being afraid from SFV business model when looking it from the outside, but honestly this is the best model for any fighting game imo, the game's business has more pros than cons.
no its not. not at all.
charging full price for 16 chars , adding then each year a season pass with 6 chars for 30 bucks which you in theory can unlock via fm...till season two, after that its very unlikely that the average joe manages to do so and only when he doesnt invest the fm into stages/costumes/colors.
on top, rising the price for costumes to 4 and 5€ "special" stages for 10€uro, old soundtracks for ..i am not sure how much they charged.

i gave bandai namco 50€uro for 37 chars, actuall game modes on release and a shit tone of customizations,,,i rather pay once and get a full package and later on possible aditional content then to pay fullprice for a f2p based approach which isnt f2p at all but trys to milk you like one.
the execution of how capcom approached the way of monetizing things is nothing to look forward too for other games.
in a improved form maybe..but not how they did it.

Having SCVI in the beginning of 2019 would be harder i think, because then it would vie for customers with DMC5 and RE2 remake which have a bigger overlap with SCVI, at least for Sword loving, nostalgic me.

tbh, I don't think the boycotting is crazy. It's an issue of a greater scope than just SoulCalibur: This is the result of the poor decisions by game publishers, over the past decade. Well into the seventh gen consoles, publishers found ways to cut content and resell them as dlc. $60 titles were released incomplete and needed patches and paid dlc to complete the experience. I remember playing Assassin's Creed 2 when it came out in 2009. Memory Sequences 12 & 13 were visibly missing from the progress HUI. Ubisoft explained they were made dlc, because of time constraints and wanted to add them later. Fair enough, but then the question becomes, why charge for them? Why design the missing sequences as "corruptions" in the game itself? After all, some games have free dlc, so why not do it for AC2? The StarWars Battlefront 2 fiasco with lootboxes and microtransactions was the straw that broke the camel's back. Now the outcry is so strong, legislators are getting involved. Just recently, they removed lootboxes from OverWatch in Belgium.

Fighting games have been really pushing for dlc characters, with Capcom and Arc Systems Works facing the most criticism. It's really no surprise Namco Bandai would do the same thing with Tekken and SoulCalibur. This, even after Harada stated he would never release dlc characters, because "each character was like a chess piece," around the time of TTT2. I honestly expected Anna in the base roster of Tekken 7 and seeing her as dlc does feel "off" somehow. You have Nina at launch, but not Anna? Why not plan Anna at launch and make another character like Lucky Chloe as dlc? I don't have a problem with dlc characters per-say, but the cost to own all them can drain your wallet. You also HAVE to buy them, to get familiar with matchups. Fighting an online character you don't own, means you can't practice against them. That sucks.

In regard to SoulCalibur VI, I was already expecting some veterans to show up as dlc. The leakers already confirmed it. Having Tira as dlc, though, threw me off, because she was SoulCalibur V. I guess there was an assumption that the returning vets from SCV (minus Algol and maybe Hlide) would return on the base roster. This whole thing feels like a Catch 22: Buy the game and potentially encourage Namco and other publishers to lock important content behind a paywall or stick to principles and don't buy the game, potentially killing SoulCalibur. I believe Okubo when he said Tira was included in wake of fan demand and she is not on the disk. But it was a risky move to even exclude her from the base roster, when absent veterans was one of the things people hated about SoulCalibur V.

I think showing the gameplay of Tira gave boycottsers the impression she was complete and already on the disk. Namco probably should've revealed the rest of the base roster first, before showcasing dlc characters. It also doesn't help that right now, that SCVI is looking like SCV when it comes to the number of female characters. I don't personally obsess over it, but the game currently has 18 characters revealed on the base roster and only 6 are female (not including Cervantes, who wasn't introduced yet or Tira as dlc.) Lacking enough female characters and then requiring players to buy a popular one isn't a good idea.

I still want to buy the game. I've been waiting over six years for a new SoulCalibur. It's unfortunate that the game has fallen into this situation, despite all the positive things we've heard about it so far.

You want all your favorite characters in the game plus a bunch of new ones? Stop asking for CAS and multiple single player modes. We’ve talked about this before months ago, you weren’t going to get everything you wanted. As long as people keep asking for CAS that will cut into development time for additional characters. Same deal with Story modes.

Development time isn’t a vacuum. You only get so much budget and time to do things.

- Power of waifus: Female characters almost always get more views.
- Power of guest characters: Ezio got 1.6m views on his announcement trailer. It's the most viewed SC video on the EU Namco channel.
- Top 5 Lost Swords character trailers on EU channel: Ivy, Sophitia, Taki, Cassandra, Amy
- Top 5 Lost Swords character trailers on JP channel: Sophitia, Ivy, Taki, Pyrrha, Mitsurugi (I'm surprised to see Pyrrha so popular)
- Taki's SC6 trailer has a very low view count. EU channel must have been very slow to upload it.
- SC6's announcement trailer has a relatively low view count too, but the video on the US channel has 1m views. Actually, all of the views of SC6 videos on the US channel are much higher.
- Overall, SC6 trailers are getting many more views than SC5 trailers (on the US channel anyway, that's where the really big numbers are showing up). It's possible Youtube is more popular now than 7 years ago, but I'm hoping it actually means there's more interest in SC6 than SC5.

And yes, that was not a typo. SC5 was released nearly SEVEN years ago. I feel old. I'm gonna go buy a walking stick.

it was cheaper have a big size roster then and now, in 2d fighters they just export the characters from last version and add new ones, some times new sprites to previous chars to add new powers.

is not the same adding new models, specially with today graphics.

people always treats their favorite ip's like we are fans we deserve all content (free if is possible) but at the end of the day is just business,

You want all your favorite characters in the game plus a bunch of new ones? Stop asking for CAS and multiple single player modes. The idea that SoulCalibur can't be a whole game by having good roster size with worthwhile modes is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. No one is asking for 40 characters with 20 mode options. People want a complete experience with the money they buy. Other fighting games, even past SoulCalibur games have done that. So, I don't get this idea that it has to be one of the other with SoulCalibur now. Getting rid of creation or guests will reduce sales and you don't even know the behind the scenes of what goes into their development. Stop calling it a detriment, when singleplayer content helped keep the series alive up to this point.

Some observations:

Another observation:
- You are very curious which is a positive thing btw xD

Remember the good ol' days when fighting games were tested in the arcades years before console release? When the complete game was released at launch?

Those days are long gone. I just want a full roster and well polished game.

While that's true for Soul Calibur that isn't the case for Tekken. In fact it was the most balanced Tekken game to released on console because of how long it was in the arcade.

The "target audience" is the reason we haven't gotten a new SC in 6 years.

The "target audience" is what made SFV underperform and MvCI bomb.

The "target audience" isn't enough to support the game. If you think Bamco only wants the 1.5-ish million ppl that bought SCV to get SCVI and no more, then you don't understand business. Three titan launches in a row can and possibly will kill this game.

Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2 bombed because it launched the same day as Modern Warfare 2. Doesn't matter that the "target audience" didn't overlap, MW2 was too massively hyped to not absorb sales from across the genre.

Massive install base, consistently growing sales, very slow production timeline, and no freedom to choose the costume you want, effectively forcing you to pay real money for them.

The first two are nigh impossible for fighters, and the latter two would be received very poorly.
I agree with you. I think that major publications, forums, Twitch and YouTube personalities are just going to ignore this game, they are probably going to cover RDR2 more than SCVI. Personally, I think SCVI should have been delayed to 2019, it kind of feels like they are sending it to die with these franchises.

I'm surprised that the EU has lower view count than the US I thought Soulcalibur was more popular in Europe
people go to the side where the trailer pops up the first time and its in the majority of cases the us one.
i am from the eu and there is no reason for me to actually go to the eu channel from bandai namco. either us or jap.
so i wouldnt give to much on these numbers.

Loot boxes is shady AF business model
Fuck loot boxes. There is nothing worse than being reliant on RNG in getting your content. DLC is pretty ok.

No thanks. Knowing that your game is pretty much finished, but you can't play it for another 1-3 years is pretty bad. I'm glad more and more companies abandon arcade-release practice.

I thought this was an interesting Tweet from Harada:

Someone commented on how amazing it was that there were no leaks about Negan coming to Tekken 7. It was a big announcement that actually took everyone by surprise. Harada responded that they have a policy of intentionally leaking fake information to company staff so that they can identify the source of a leak. Hearing this, I couldn't help but wonder...

1. Could any of the bad leaks have been intentional disinformation? To try and ferret out where the leaks were coming from?

2. Is Project Soul at all worried about how leaky SCVI's development has been? I know Japanese developers can be super strict about this sort of thing, and Harada definitely seems to pride himself on running a tight ship.

I mostly agree with you, however I have one point of contention, DBZ raging blast 2 bombed because it was just another DBZ game before the series was rejuvenated, while i thought it was fun it was still that generic "fighting game but not really a fighting game-fighting game" that really only the anime crowd bought. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad, it was just meh and the DBZ series had been steadily declining every year.

Do you think that the season pass characters should be revealed after the base roster is revealed, or after the game is released?
