My first "Real" tournament.

Despite what people have said about modulating your expectations (and it's good advice, really), from the moment you sit down to play until the moment the final round is over and somebody moves on, expect to win. Don't get nervous. Don't doubt. Hell, don't even respect your opponent. Make them earn every bit of that. The worst thing you can do is psych yourself out and make losing a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I can't stress the fact enough (even though about 5 people above already mentioned it)....play offline only! Too much online fucks up your timing BADLY, so badly that even something as simple as Kilik WS B, 66B combo becomes a chore to do. That's why I haven't been online in a while and probably won't go back.

I think I was one of the first to experience this severely, and I'm sure some people remember it. At first I thought I was losing my mind or something. The transition from online to offline, in regards to time-sensitive buffering and execution is a disgusting and disheartning feeling.

What exactly is your problem with me? Whatever it is, just speak on it and quit making passive aggressive comments here and there. Maybe i'm wrong.
relax guy, I have no problem with u. come to the tourney, ask for the LORD, and we can play some mirror matches before the thing starts, maybe that'll help prepare u some.

Shenrei, you use Setsuka online? Of course that would mess you're offline game up severely. Setsuka seems unusable online to me unless you just wanna do 33B and 2A+B all day. Taki is another character who shouldn't be used online, for a couple different reasons........nobody should be used online, really.

another thing, while they are talking about online timing...try playing on a CRT TV - my crew had issues at their first tourney due to TV lag they didn't realize they had. They were flubbing JFs all over the place. I would hook up to a regular TV just to make sure you can make the adjustment, and to see how good your tv really is.

Its a very scary thing first time around... i took some Valium and found it helped calm the nerves.
How about taking your Mummy along for emotional support?

pshaw! I'm doing that already.

I'm too much of a pussy to drive on the high way (Been in two accidents already, one within a month of getting amy liscence and the other one totaled my monte carlo :(! ) So she's driving me. Does that make me immature?

.....Probably...

And also what is this tv lag about? I've never even heard of that. Is it something that only happens to HD tv's or something? I'm confused as hell here.

Haha! Nice to see you can take a joke mate! :D Seriously keep your mind on your game and dont be sucked into playing into somebody elses game. Be patient aswell... again Valium helps ;)

(I should have been a dealer instead of being a dependable cog in this Government role they call a job)

ALL THE BEST.

LCD TVs have a reaction time mine is 8 ms i think on normal and plasma TVs have no reaction time this could already be enough to screw someone's timing up.

dude just meet me up there, it'll be my first time goin to, im down in stn mt. and i resent lord's earlier

Well just try not to get raped too badly, and when you lose don't make 10 excuses about why you lost and start sending hand written hate mail to the people who took you out.

Dude you are such a dick its not even funny most of you xbox players are.

Blood: I don't think Ceirnian says that specifically because he thinks Ceirnian is like that, but rather because vets of fighting games roll their eyes when we see the above-mentioned excuses fly post-tourney.

Also, if Kraytos goes to the tourney I REALLY want captured vids of that.

I suggest you sit REALLY close to your opponent. Preferably put one leg on top of his. If that doesn't unnerve him, then you're pretty much boned.

I find the transition from online to offline difficult only for a couple rounds. You can easily adapt after one good play session of at least an hour. So, if your only source of reliable practice is online, don't give it up entirely. Just make sure the last play session you have before going to the tournament is offline.

Also, if possible, make sure you warm up. If they let you have some practice rounds at the tournament location, great. Otherwise, make sure you get in some offline practice rounds before you leave home so you're not going into your first round cold.

Like some other posters said, expect to win. If you don't believe that you're going to win, you won't.

From what I have seen and heard and my experience from tournaments (which I have since retired from), ATL competition is pretty good. NY would be a step up. Cali is at the top. If you go to a Japan for a tournament you get owned plain and simple regardless of where you are from. That goes for any fighting game. Of course I just realized that everything I have said wont really help you with anything. Sorry.

i'll be at this tournament too, and i certainly don't expect to win. :p i have next to no offline experience but i'mma try my best!

? None of that sounds right...

It was way back, back last year in August. I stopped playing online sometime in the middle of September last year. I don't have that problem anymore, but when I did, it was really frustrating to me because I wasn't sure if it was online, or switching between playing on TVs with high input lag and ones with no lag, or just me and my paranoia. For me, it was a combination of everything and took me a good 3 weeks or so to get it out of my system. I believe it also was a bit more difficult for me since I main a character that relies heavily on timing based execution.
