SCV- New CHARACTER ideas

True but a spear and shield warrior is redundant we have Hilde which is a great variation on the style imho. Scimitars are still apart of the sword family which is very oversaturated in SC all ready.

Which brings me back to my original point. I don't care about the style in which people use their sword. I want something totally different.

-A fatass.Very fat and round, wich use his weight as advantage. SC never had on/quote]

Pretty the most defining aspect of Ivy is her fat...
>_>

We did have a fat guy as the bonus character for the "fan" set in 3, though he didn't do anything with it and like the other CAS folks, didn't do much.

Hmmm been at work all day and sorta forgot what we were debating about.
But To answer your questions... I don't know LOL
I don't really have an idea of an appearance or weapon. every since I've watched this video by Dhim,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xAqM5dkFSs
I've been thinking of how SC5 should have it's 1st african chick. Again Origin isn't really important to me, but I enjoy reading everyone else posts of the matter.

P.S. In no shape or form did anyone say Tribal culture being racist or offensive. We have alot of intelligent people on this site, lets learn to read better...

Indeed. But there was a slight element of nervous worry from some members about how such a character would be perceived, we were just discussing how this shouldn't factor into character design.

I love the idea of an Indian female fighter! It's such an iconic culture, I don't know why they haven't included it before! Of course, all cultures are iconic, but India has such distinct, easily recognisable design qualities/icons. Zafina (Tekken) is quite an interesting design (though a bit miss-mashed), but a 17thC version of her could be really interesting.

She could use the native kalaripayattu style, which uses a long thin blade and is incredibly acrobatic, using lots of flying lunges and leaps. Not sure we need another shield user (although its more like a buckler or bracer), but the curved, scimitar-like blade is pretty cool.

PS - that Zulu guy looks badass!

Here's some lady kalaripayattu warriors -

One thing the roster lacks right now is:
1. A Japanese female. Natsu doesn't count. Even though she has a Japanese name and is born in Japan, her appearance is reminiscent to Setsuka.
2. A geisha-esque character, like Setsuka, or an onna bugeisha (female samurai).

This was a few reasons as to why I want Li-Long/Chie's daughter into the game. Also:

1. With Xiba, and possibly Bangoo, taking the left side of the character select screen, thus making them good, the daughter could be either evil or neutral, since she would be on the right side.
2. Since she would be 24 in this game, this could give a possibility of adding another mature female into the game.
3. She could be a possible rival to Natsu.
4. Her presence could honor her father's name into the series once again, evil or not, just like Bangoo would honor Rock's name.
5. Since her mother is the head of the Fuma Clan, I would assume that she could have some ninja abilities, and with her presence, could involve the clan into the main story.

You know, for a long as I've known SoulCalibur, I've seen it as a weapon-based fighter. I have nothing against wanting diversity among the characters, but what the hell is with the idea of a character "representing a country?" The characters in Soul Calibur may be from different countries, but they don't represent anything AT ALL. A woman with white hair, huge breasts wearing stripper clothes doesn't represent England, a power-hungry, undead pirate that raped someone and conceived the stripper lady doesn't represent Spain, a BDSM blind, mute guy that twists his body to the point he appears boneless doesn't represent Italy, an obnoxious vampire that's been joked about being a pedophile to his foster daughter doesn't represent France, and a humanoid dinosaur that can use a small ax doesn't represent Sparda. I'm all for diversity, but representing countries isn't what the series does (and if it does, it fails miserably). Some characters don't have a country to represent (where does Tira come from?)

Also, they can't just throw in a character from any country. I mean, the events of surrounding the series was in Europe and some parts of Asia (that's why most of the characters were from those countries). I got nothing against making characters from African countries, India or Arabia, but it has to work with the story. Why would someone from India be involved with anything regarding Soul Edge or Soul Calibur if there's no link or motive to get involved? Why would someone from Zimbabwe be involved if the events doesn't directly affect them? We don't need characters that'll end up being hated for having no purpose other than from being from a different country.

One thing that constantly bothers me in this forum is the term 'African character' as if Africa is a country. It's a continent and there's countries within Africa. I'm sure you guys know this, but some of the replies on this thread groups African people together as one group. I'm not African, but I can imagine someone finding that offensive.

They are meaning African in a general term. I'm sure people aren't caring which country or which tribe they come from. Just being from that continent is warrant enough.

You make a good point, but with FG's, it's important to keep the weapon styles and characters grounded in some form of reality, which therefore requires a variety of nationalities to present those styles in a recognisable way - otherwise you may as well play high fantasy fighters like BlazBlue or Guilty Gear. SC is set in the our own world, and part of the appeal to a good portion of the fans is to see real world fighting styles (Japanese samurai, Germanic knights, Greek warriors) presented with a unique Namco twist.

As someone from England, I would argue that Ivy is an excellent rep for my country. She's the classic cinematic evil Brit - Her commanding tone of voice, no-nonsense attitude, confidence and Byronic magnetism, as well as her aristocratic background are all recognisably English attributes. Yes, her outfit is way over the top, but the steely personality underneath, combined with her witheringly dismissive, dominatrixy attitude is best presented by an English character. Most English females in video games are presented this way - Cammy, Christie (DoA) and Lara Croft all share similar traits - steely, no-nonsense personalities combined with liberal fan-service......and it works. It just wouldn't work as well if Ivy was from somewhere else.......

The fact they made a Filipina character fit into the story, means that there is no reason why an Indian, Thai or Kenyan character can't be worked in too - it's just more appealing (IMO) to see actual cultures than silly, fantasy characters (I'm looking at you, Zwei) who have no basis in reality and are therefore jarring.

I've always wanted a character from Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in Soulcalibur. Oh yes, we already have Lynette from SCIII, who is really cute, but in reality she hasn't too much in common with historical Poland.

It's probably a kind of national pride, but I think polish culture, including the field of edged weapons, in XVIII century was really interesting.

First, there no character in SC, who wield saber. There are a lot of short swords, rapiers or katanas, but no saber. And polish sabers are the best of their kind. Quoting wikipedia: "Sword cutting can be done directly or flywheels with elbow and shoulder, and all the curtains static in defense. It can also perform all the major cuts - both those which give the best western swords, as well as those that can perform only by katanas.". Other option is lance, which was available in SCIII CaS. Belowi s a picture of polish saber:

Second, apperance of polish nobles in SC times. I know they are probably not enough cool and modern to create a simple character on their basis (especially when we compare their to fantasy-like appearances of ZWEI and Viola), but after a few changes and making them "more attractive", they could bring an element of freshness, and kinda of oriental-vibe (Polish nobles borrowed some elements of the costume of the Orient). Just look:

We even have a archetype of fat-nobleman, like someone mentioned before xD

I know, this isn't historical game, but great, weapon based fighting one, but I would prefer a more historical direction, than the fantastic, which Namco Bandai takes.

PS: And yeah, Zulu warrior will be great addition too!

Give some girl lynettes style, change her standing animation, and give her fans instead of instruments, and you will have made me the happiest person ever!

Oh yes, polish(-lithuanian-ukrainian) meido with fans, it's crazy and badass at once! She is definately my favourite from SCIII bonus chars.

Actually Guilty Gear took place in the real world as well. It was just hundreds of years in the future, which was why the environments seemed crazy. Sol Badguy was American and there were characters from Romania and Australia. But the difference between GG and SC was that what happened to the world affected everyone. What happened in SC was almost entirely in Europe and East Asia (and the the Philippines is an east Asian country like Japan, Korea, and China.) People dismiss fighting game stories, but they have a bigger impact than most players think.

I still fail to see how any character could represent a country in SC. Being a character from a certain background doesn't make you represent it. It's not like Street Fighter where theres a tornament with people from almost any country and they have their nation flag with them. Maybe SC should look into different countries, but their main focus is weapon styles (mainly swords), not representing people.

BTW zewi isnt purely fantasy; hes been said to german.

a native american with twin tomahawks, or perhaps a member of an african tribe with twin mengbetu knives. or Mitsurugi's brother who wields a Nodachi would be nice, as long as his play style is different. throw somebody in the mix who has NO weapons, just hands and feet!
