Plot twist: Arthur is the Bonus

Edge Master as the bonus would actually be the best choice, because it wouldn't lock out those who didn't buy the season pass from enjoying every character in the game. A season pass is just an easier way to get all the DLC with one purchase, and EM would be a neat little "thank you" from Namco without insulting all the other players who can't afford that purchase or didn't feel like paying for it.

Infinitely better than locking a full character behind a $30 paywall.

It would cheat everyone out of the extra money they paid to get the character. Is that a joke?

I've clearly not been paying the right attention then, I stand corrected.

As for the T.O thing, I think it's less about having the characters unlocked and more about if a character is only available to a specific amount of people (in this case by not being separate DLC further down the line) that already puts that character into a potential ban-list, as you'd need to know someone who owns them and have them have the time to practice against you so you can learn the MU. It fragments the playerbase, and you don't wanna do that for any reason.

Plus not having it as sep DLC would be a loss of profits honestly, since will who may not be able to buy the Hyper Magical Shiny edition at the time may still wanna grab the characters. I daresay most people will buy all the characters tbh. (Another reason they do it, tourney players will almost certainly buy all the characters and casuals will almost certainly buy all the CaS parts.)

I'm curious who they have chosen to release as DLC. They'd need to choose carefully as if they choose a random low-popularity returning character then a lot of people would happily skip buying the character. I'm thinking the DLC characters would need to meet one of the following criteria:
  • A very popular returning character
  • Guest character
I could see Edge Master being the only mimic but limited to the season pass, as then people would need to buy the season pass if they want access to a mimic character.

I'll be curious to see if they've done any work to hide the DLC characters from the final game assets. A lot of games contain pieces of DLC (or in some cases, the DLC is already in finished form in the game install) which might reveal everything about it. Tekken Tag 2 is a good example where people figured out all of the DLC day one as it was all on-disc. Capcom scrambled character codenames in files after one of the betas. Namco named DLC characters as "DLC character 1" and etc in Tekken 7's game files, though they forgot to remove references to Tekken bowl.

Or alternatively, a brand new character that people will like.

Inferno as the only mimic unlocked by the story would still make a lot more sense than otherwise. And the reasons you listed are why I feel like Setsuka and Hilde are the most likely returnees to be DLC and they likely will do a guest, which seems like it would be 2B. The last slot, which may well be the bonus, should be extra enticing to get someone to want to buy the season pass to get them. Maybe Amy/Viola, Seong Mi-na, or Cassandra. Or if the Vergeben stress sweat rumor is true, the maybe Raphael.

I feel a lot of people would be hesitant if it's an all-new character as they have no idea if they'd enjoy the playstyle of the character. But on the other hand, if Taki was DLC then that would get a ton of sales as there's a lot of fans of Taki (though it would also piss off a portion of the fanbase). And as long as they choose popular characters, then I think guest characters would sell well regardless. I'm thinking people are primarily interested in guest characters for the gimmick factor rather than expecting a great moveset.

Bah popular or not most CaS players would buy any CaSable style but avoid guest characters as they aren't useful for CaS. In fact most any CaS player would take a complete unknown new style if CaSable over a useless guest as well. Most non CaS will pick up any style they might compete againsr be they guest new or otherwise so that they can even if they don't like the character better learn it to compere against it.

Honestly not sure the point of dlc guest characters. By the time people are looking at new dlc characters after launch most who are going to buy it already have and those who haven't are unlikely to look into it til after buying it anyway. Only point to guests I see is prerelease.

In my opinion any character that's dlc needs to be useful to all play styles to maximize potential buyers. Meaning something that can compete in tournaments and be used in CaS. As anything else is useless to half the potential purchasers and any guest is too far after the initial advertising hype to gain the miniscule extra purchasers from outside the series.

I’d rather they keep guests to a minimum and introduce ideas that will actually stick around. As long as they’re not like the SCV characters I don’t think people would mind.

Honestly I'd be all for guests if the damn owners if their IP would relax a bit and allow for guests to have a real style and become CaSable. I mean I seriously wonder sometimes what they are thinking. Whenever a guest shows up and creates an unCaSable style slot it has the reverse effect and actually pisses me off against them and their IP which is clearly not a desired result. I can't be the only person affected in this way.

Another possibility is that the bonus character is actually the second guest and that the three other DLC characters are returning styles.

The problem with unlockable characters is that its inconvenient for tournaments where they'd have to unlock everyone on every machine they're using (imagine having to complete everything in Weapon Master mode multiple times so everyone can play as Lizardman for example). CAS parts and extra costumes and weapons and museum stuff are all nice things to have us unlock though.
DOA5 solved this problem years ago. Takes notes Namco and Capcom. *coughs* Exhibition mode! *coughs*

Check the Tekken World Tour events in the US. It seems that the demo has been at all of those. Coming up is CEO (this weekend lol) and after that Summer Jam.

Thank you I appreciate that! I will look into the Tekken Tour dates. Tried looking up Summer Jam but all I could find were various music festivals haha!

What so on and so forth? Not UNI, not GG, not SFV, not MvC, not KI, not Tekken, not Chaos Code, not Skullgirls.

KoF has bosses locked behind a quick arcade mode. NRS does Story Mode-locked characters. But they're really in the minority.

edit:
I do remember more recent iterations of SC besides 3 having Story Mode locked characters. But that was 6 years ago. Times are different now.

Guilty Gear had a character locked behind story mode too.
