Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

People here need to go outside more. I think it's tough when your perception of everything is within a small bubble of very in-tune people, yet trying to talk on the greater public's view of reveals, gameplay desires, favorite characters, etc.

What exactly has been officially said about "Groh's Father"?
officially nothing, in his bio are only listed Ozuru (master) and Curtis (friend), maybe Ozuru is his father.
Then why do people keep going on about him? No one said anything?
Ahhh ok.
...watch it end up being Cervantes.

I really hope we get one more new character. I really, really hate the twinblade concept.

Ozuru, or Odr has the kanji for "Master" under his relationship and the story details under Groh's fighting style suggest that Ozuru was his instructor, not his father or anything else like that.

Curtis isn't mention anywhere other than in the relationship chart and by a formal designation (IIRC). Curtis is unlikely to be related.

With Talim and Voldo being playable on the new build, does anybody attending Comic-Con have a picture of what the new character select screen looks like?

My current speculation list.
I'd say right people, wrong slots:

I find it fascinating that even with the very original games there's a massive divide in the community over which are the better designs when it comes to characters that play similar to each other. Considering I started with the first game in the series back in the day I simply prefer those designs over their replacements. If a sequel came along and picked the originals over their spiritial successors I would be dancing like a motherfucker. I was already invested in it's world and it's characters long before the series became big so I know all to well what it's like to be burned by missing mains (Li Long).

We really need another row of character slots so everyone is happy. Ideally there should be nine extra character slots for pretty much the full package when it comes to unique characters but I don't see that happening, but perhaps if the game is a massive success then it could be a reality, much like how Tekken 7 is getting a season 2 pack.
That's the thing, it really depends on where you got into the series. If your first game was SoulCalibur II, then your reaction to Li Long, Hwang, and Arthur in SoulCalibur III was like, who are these random people? Whereas people who had played SoulBlade and SoulCalibur before it were happy to see some old faces return. Arthur less than the other two, given his circumstance, but I'm sure some people were still appreciative all the same. Those same people are likely to prefer Seong Mi-na's return, because they're still low-key (or not) distasteful of Kilik for essentially stealing her spot by taking her style and running with it, and being critical to the plot, while she just kind of chases idiots around for a living.

But that's why I'm happy with the prospect that Hwang may actually make a return here, since this is his territory, and it can be seen as somewhat a compromise, where Li Long sadly has zero chance, Yun-seong is also quite meaningless to the plot, while Maxi is quite important, so Hwang can take his spot back and not only flesh out his character more, but give Mi-na a second chance at life too. While it's possible Yun-seong could also do this, he abandoned Mi-na in SoulCalibur III to pair up with Talim instead, which led Mi-na to chase Talim in SoulCalibur IV... it's just so backwards.

But if we can only have so many characters, I feel like what you listed is the best compromise to have the old and new with styles and all included. Setsuka and Hilde can come via DLC, so we'll have their styles too. Cassandra maybe too, though I think she's got a chance of being on the main roster too, instead of "New" on your picks, since @Vergeben highlighted that Grøh's dad would be a boss character, I've just got this mental image that he's going to be like Night Terror, some overpowered monster who would be too much to be playable.

I'm still wondering why people prefer Seong Mi-na over Hilde or Setsuka. This is madness.
It's a combination of relevancy in this time period and that Seong Mi-na has been disrespected time and time again, and this is her second chance. Setsuka and Hilde are already known and popular, while Seong Mi-na has always fallen by the wayside, due to so many people starting the series with SoulCalibur II, where she was already pretty much irrelevant, and Kilik was in the spotlight. She got differentiation of moveset starting in SoulCalibur III and even moreso in SoulCalibur IV, but when she remained not important to the story, she got hardly any attention.

She's just as different from Kilik as Cassandra is to Sophitia, but Cassandra had the spotlight in SoulCalibur II, where Sophitia had to be unlocked, but Sophitia remained important to the story in following games, she's so central to the plot that you can't help but have her shoved in your face, so despite Cassandra's popularity, Sophitia also remains popular by exposure.

Setsuka and Hilde can and most likely will be available as DLC. Would it be better if they were on the main roster? Definitely, I'm not disputing that. But we should establish the core first, and then add the others later. Seong Mi-na is more core than Setsuka and Hilde, considering the timeline of events that we're dealing with in this game. If SoulCalibur VII follows suit and covers SoulCalibur II, III, and IV, then Setsuka and Hilde likely would be main roster inclusions, essentially their DLC character forms would be put into full swing for the next round, and then their stories would develop as main roster characters, since it would be more fitting in the timeline. Story is important again, and they're not leaving it unfinished like SoulCalibur V.

You guys noticing the trend of characters reveal as of late? meaning that they'll catch you off guard characters such as yoshi out of left field. Then 2 weeks ago talim and now from no where voldo. At this point it isn't to far fetched if they would just drop setsuka/raphael out of the blue. so their definitely playing the surprise factor hard here. everybody whos a favorite/popular character still has a chance. I see that indeed there saving the meat and potatoes for last, soup 1st...lol
Yeah, but since they teased Astaroth, Cervantes, and Lizardman back at E3, I feel like they're going to drop those sooner rather than later. EVO seems right to do it, along with Tira to round out the "evil" folks. It's a lofty expectation, but isn't impossible. It could also just be Tira. But it would then remain a mystery why they would tease those three characters so heavily and then not officially reveal them for more than a month, maybe two if the trend continues. Like Voldo, we basically know that they're going to be in anyway, so we're not going to get a big reaction, so saving them for later, I really don't see much point. Whereas Tira would generate a lot of hype, as would Raphael, Cassandra, or Seong Mi-na.

You mean you don't also fight like this in real life? Just me?

...ok.

Rock, Arthur, Li Long, Revenant, Chie, Salia or Dampierre.
I would like to see the iconic
latest
Valeria was best girl among the 3 shopgirls. I'll always hold on to my belief (and endless hope) that the Grieve Edge moveset needs to come back someday.
While Revenant was a great design, backstory, and interesting moveset because the Wave Swords were an awesome weapon and moveset that fit right into the series so well. They "salvaged" a few moves from it for Algol. But that was like putting a pube in a cookie and asking you why you make a funny face when you see it.

Something vague I heard about Grøh's dad was that he might also be his master. Whether that means he's Ozuru/Odr or Grøh's dad just also trained Grøh, I don't know. But I did find it interesting when I was told that in passing.
Given Okubo likes Star Wars, I wouldn't put it passed them to do some kind of "Grøh, I am your father." moment.
Which reminds me......
Here's a funny side story detail of why I didn't know Grøh's name yet all these details about his personality, weapon, story stuff, rival, and even voice actor; Grøh's placeholder name during development was "Darth Maul"
I'm not kidding either. lol
Similar to how SNK back in the day called Benimaru "Polnareff" during development due to the obvious inspiration with the character, until they settled on a name, the same kind of thing happened with Grøh.
Which made more sense why the name they decided on for Grøh seemed like a weird afterthought.... because it apparently was.

Grøh's dad*
but I have no idea what his name is, what he'll look like or anything like that kind of specific (yet at least) other than he'll be a boss in the story and utilize a unique/new moveset not meant to replace anybody.
I know both VAs they chose to voice him in English and Japanese too, but I'm not saying anything until he's finally revealed.

I really dont think Hilde is going to make the roster as a legit character with story regardless of popularity. She would be too young i think. Maybe CAS only.

Whoops, flubbed that one, thanks for the correction. And that's what I mean, you say he's a boss, and he's got a unique style, which while that may suck to not be able to actually play with, if it's an interesting and powerful boss moveset, it may be something to remember regardless.

Why do you assume he wont be playable. I suppose i haven't been playing a lot of the most recent fighting games for a few years now but i thought they were moving away from this trend.

In fact that was done at least two times. 1rst people vote so Cassandra could win but then someone manipulated it for Talim to win which stayed as the most popular character till now.

Truth is Amy was the first one on that poll, originally even before Cassandra and Talim. Unfortunately only few people know that.
It's disappointing if the poll was heavily affected by duplicated votes and Project Soul is taking it seriously. I would be curious to see an honest list of the popularity of all SC characters.

I don't think you need to worry about Cassandra...she'll either be in the base game or as one of the DLC characters. She was #12 on the character poll and was one of the most criticized (in addition to lack of zas and talim) characters to not be in V.
If you are wrong I will hunt you down and throw exactly one potato in your general direction.

I don't honestly have any real evidence that he won't be playable, it's just that someone in the Cassandra/Seong Mi-na/Raphael/Yun-seong group won't make it in if he does end up being playable, due to limited roster space. The alternative could be that Grøh's dad is unlocked in the center where we're putting Inferno, and Inferno is not playable instead, but then we won't have a mimic, which some would be happy with, but others wouldn't. It's one of those "you can't make everyone happy" kind of things. The only way we'll know for sure is when the game comes out, since I personally doubt that we'll get a reveal trailer for Grøh's dad, that he will be one of the secrets the game holds close to its chest. That, or he's revealed at the last minute with little to no real information, like a teaser like Grøh was teased at the end of the launch trailer.

But my rationale where it could end up where he's super powered and not playable is in that Inferno will be defeated somewhere along the middle of the timeline, where there will still be more space for more main story, and I can't picture it just ending in the middle and having the side stories go forward beyond where the main story ends, so, if what @Vergeben is saying is true, and he is a boss character, logic would point to that Grøh's dad would be the final boss, taking place at the end of the timeline. A final boss that would need to outshine Inferno, if it holds true that the story would get more difficult as it goes along. Inferno is already known to have boss moves, so Grøh's dad would need to be a step beyond that, having some perhaps unique boss moves and maybe mechanics of his own, that when in the hands of a player, would be too powerful for balance.

Boss characters should be designed to APPEAR overpowered but the actual game balance and how he compares to the rest of the cast will come down to the exact data and stats of his moves. They have ways to fix that, he could get infinite meter or double the HP for single-player modes.

I'm just hoping i'll like him ... because i despise Groh and i was an Algol main so i won't be happy if we get a complete douche instead.
