Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

There's also the possibility of unlocking more story modes by completing other characters' stories (or by getting to a certain point in the main story), there looks to be enough space for 3 more names under Geralt after all. Finishing Ivy could give you Cervantes for example, meaning he wouldn't be one of the remaining blurred slots.

Once again, Namco would have finalized the roster well before they started production on the game. The fact that they were adverstising an additional four character DLC months before E3 is further symbolic of how a production schedule at a professional works. They aren't flipping coins on the roster or being indecisive who gets into a roster after they announce a release date. It is just not done. The fact of the matter is, editing and voice acting for localization or for domestic release is one of the last production elements done before a game is released, and I would bet you anything that they had their recording sessions done in the Spring of this year, and that means all characters (if not the DLC, but almost positive they would have theirs done too), would have been completed by now.
I hate to shit on you like this because I like you, but character cuts happen even after a game is announced.
I'll use a notoriously famous example: Frank West and Doctor Octopus were both planned for MvC3, this is widely known.
Frank West was even teased as a silhouette as part of an official artwork early into the game's reveal cycle and was the pilot in the one cinematic trailer that they had to cut out the reveal of it being too.
Frank was cut too due technical limitations, but later made it into UMvC3. Doctor Octopus was cut entirely (had a theme song done for him and work started on him) and never returned thanks to Marvel changing their minds on his inclusion. Capcom talked about that in a frustrating tone when speaking about it too.

Frank is the silhouette above Captain America's:

Ok but you are discussing character being cut, not added.

The corners are probably unlockables which may feature Cervantes and Papa Groh. If the middle isn’t Inferno and instead CaS, Lizzy may be opposite of random.

Leaves three spaces for Raph, Tira, and a Korean swordie.

It seems like a lot of people are writing off Yun-seong in favor of Hwang, but let's not forget that the former not only has major ties to Mi-na but also to Talim. I'd say both have a pretty equal chance of making it in, though if anything, Yun-seong may be DLC. It would be odd to have such an integral character in both Talim and Mi-na's conjoined stories not actually be playable in the game.

There's also Yun just being more recognisable than Hwang. We all know Hwang well since this is a SC fansite but what about all the casual fans who started with SCII or III or even IV? I'd wager most people didn't start with the dreamcast game and to them Yun's the character who represents that style the most.

Of course there's also the possibility of neither being in and Mina being the only Korean rep, that can't be ignored either.

Is that running with the assumption that every playable character needs to also appear on the story mode timeline?

Not every character, but again, if Geralt, a guest character - who will never appear in another Soul Calibur game again - is getting a story mode; it is best to assume that every returning character is going to get one too. THose that wouldn't get a story mode, are likely to be boss characters, like Inferno. It's reasonable to assume that one of the newcomers could be a boss character too. Why they wouldn't get a story mode would be subject what's in the story that would prevent them from getting one.

As to whether or not, more slots would appear in the Story Mode after completing the game or after completing certain character stories, that's not really a good question. Because if they could hide slots in the story mode? Why would Namco publish a screenshot of the Story Mode with 20 character slots with several of them blurred out? If they had a Story Mode that could hide character slots, surely, they would've published a screenshot that hide those slots.

Likewise, given the character select screen has a limited number of slots, and one of those slots is taken by a random select, and we know that character creation is coming back, so another slot on the select screen would have to be taken for CAS, we can see that the number of character slots is about 22. There are 20 slots in the Story Mode. Therefore, it is reasonable assume that the remaining slots NOT in the Story Mode are reserved for boss characters.

It is certainly possible for them to reveal additional story mode character slots. Maybe those two remaining slots are boss characters and they too could have a story mode. It's possible that there may be three boss characters for one hidden slot in the middle (though I suspect the DLC slot is there, if not on the lower left corner). But this is speculation, and I don't have enough evidence to justify this possibility. As it stands, based on what we know, three of the six story mode slots have been revealed; that leaves three left. We know Cervantes is probably coming and will fit somewhere on the Story Mode (I think we all have a fairly good guess which slot he takes); thus only two slots remain on the story mode and for returning characters.

If not for returning characters; then probably one more for a returner and one more for a newcomer, but for some reason, I don't find this likely. But I don't have any evidence to justify why, only that Algol in SC4 was a newcomer and a boss character, but he doesn't really give enough credence for that.

The Lizzy silhouette has a sword that’s too big for Sophie’s preferences. Unless Cassie chooses a bigger sword and Lizzy copies her.

But after seeing Mi-Na’s variance from Kilik, I’m almost inclined to think the other Greek fighter will take inspiration from Patroklos.

To me it seems like Mi-Na without a Korean swordie wouldn’t feel right. I call them and Talim claiming the bottom row.

Also realized her dad might return, possibly as a CaS-able NPC.

Since the lizardman in the story panel has a sword and shield, I'm inclined to believe he'll be a Patroklos based sword and board user, but with sweet ass reptilian attacks peppered in.

Low lizardman sweep, headbutts, unblockable roll, you know, standard lizard fare.

I also think that Gamescom in Germany will be when we see the next bit of info. I'd like to see CaS or Story something alongside a character reveal.

What a thing to wake up to, huh?

I'm so glad Seong Mi-Na is finally back! Although, i really dislike her costume this time. Her costume from SCIV looks way better. But maybe it'll grow on me, like Voldo's did? Anyways, glad she's back.

Astaroth looks alright, minus the snakes and that huge ugly shoulder armor (what's with this game and awkwardly huge shoulder armor?).

Sad part is we probably wont get any gameplay videos this time since the event is almost over.

I think the next bit of information will be at Gamescom, which is in 2 weeks. after that TGS?

Lizardman Patroklos is something I've been repping for as long as the idea of Lizardman coming back was even an idea it's just the reasonable outcome.

@Windstar You still didn't identify which line Seong Mi-na would take. It makes the most sense to be next to Ivy, yes, but above her, not below her. But the line above Ivy likely belongs to Hwang, looking at the name length. So insert a new line after Hwang and before Ivy for Seong Mi-na. Cervantes goes under Ivy, then Lizardman, then Astaroth. Tira under Sophitia, Voldo under Yoshimitsu, Talim under Voldo. Any other characters can also have lines added.

About the argument of why not edit out lines? They did do that, in the E3 trailer. Check it. No blurred lines, just missing lines. It's very possible that they added Mi-na after the realization she may not make it was met with backlash, and she was planned DLC like Zasalamel but ended up not being so because of them listening to fans.

She makes sense to do that. Anything with a blade. I’m just wondering if she’s got some kind of Marth/home run effect with it.

Also her costume ironically reminds me of D’va.

I could see Lizardman as a playable character without a story mode potentially.
I'm starting to lean towards proper Lizardman part of the roster, and then also generic lizardmen henchmen which you fight during the story mode.

I think that's implied if you look at these story mode illustrations (first one looks a lot more unique and is probably Lizardman for the story mode, and the other ones look like generic ones you fight during story mode):

I'm surprised they're going for sword and shield Lizardman, but they're probably going for that since that's what he used in SC1.

It’s going to feel weird if Rock doesn’t appear and we still have Hwang. Devs would have to be creative to make the former work.

Maybe he can have the dual axes now?

But then Raph, Cassie, Setsuka, Hilde or Tira have to be DLC.

Zas and Talim missed V so they got in.

Now my OCD/perfectionism wants to justify a barbarian. Even Li-Long can vary from Maxi by having a three section staff.
