Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Speaking of Ivy's outfits, I really hope that if they do get 2P costumes, her's is more in line with her gender bender outfits. Maybe not Georgess Washington, but her matador outfit from SCI would be the best possible scenario (and it works too, considering SCVI is a reboot of it).

I actually don't hate her 2P's from SCIII and SCIV since they make her look like the noblewoman she's supposed to be, and I don't hate her christmas tree outfit from SCV either, but it just looks like it would be better suited for one of the Williams in Tekken lol.

You can’t compare voldo to ivy man. The issue isn’t about amount of skin shown but a woman being presented as a sex object when there isn’t really a male equivalent so it’s not equal. Voldo is not a sex object, he is meant to be creepy. For the record I like that the female characters are still sexy but I can totally see how people might be turned off by it. If ultimately it will be better for the franchise for more modest outfits for females go for that. Whatever is better for the series growth is most important. Getting mad about a video game character being sexy is a little silly, but the skimpiness of SC female outfits shouldn’t be some point of stubborn pride we refuse to budge on, it’s not what’s important about sc.

Both Hoko Temple and Temple of The Dead need to come back!

Oh yes we need those stages!

Here's something you haven't considered:

People who grandstand and make statements condemning Ivy's outfit will NEVER play the game. Its not like too much skin shown was the tipping point for them not purchasing the game and joining our community.

They are professional activist and should be treated as the parasitic filth that they are.

Their livelihood is to play the victim and to flaunt their false moral superiority.

If you kowtow to them, they'll just demand more and more. There is no pleasing them.

This is something I can agree with. Ivy's costume in SCV with the waistcoat was a good evolution of her trademark look (especially coming off of Floss and String Ivy in SCIV). Though the Kotaku author did miss a few points, like how the game is a reboot of a game released in the 90's, the specific era she said characters like Ivy would have been more socially acceptable. So of course Ivy is going to look like, lo and behold, what she looked like back then, just with more polygons and such. Then she brings up how Sophitia looks even more skimpy than she does now, completely ignoring the fact that Sophitia (including her Elysium cameo in SCV) has been wearing less fabric/more translucent clothing since SCIII. Sophitia in VI is like titanium compared to the wet tissues she's worn in her last physical appearance, which was IV.

Even characters like Taki weren't exactly sexy to begin with (how you make a fire truck red bodysuit sexy is beyond me), but to be fair back then she didn't have her trademark torpedo balloons and SE was even worse for wear than SCI in terms of polygon count.

TL;DR: The Kotaku article has a point, but compounded with weak arguments and lack of concrete evidence.

Did Verge say something about Cassie having a spear instead?

I like her style better on men than Sophie’s to be honest but Lizzy might have a more suiting style, especially if he steals from Patroklos.

If Viola’s style isn’t used, I do hope it’s a CaS exclusive since it makes sense for that. Don’t mind a bare-handed style either, but preferably Heihachi’s. It’s not like CaSes are allowed in tournaments.

A spear? That's the first I'm hearing of it. I thought it was that Cassandra was supposed to be in SoulCalibur V, where she would have had a longsword style, taking inspiration from Darth Vader.

Spear and Shield could be cool, and it's not that HUGE of a change and is very greek/roman so fits great. In fact is more historically iconic and accurate than the sword and shield as the sword was traditionally the backup weapon if the spear is broken or lost. I would heartily approve her return with a spear, but sword and shield? Naw we have enough of those.
The spear and shield thing was something that came up in a conversation here when talk of too many sword and shield users came up. Cassandra switching to a spear and shield could work for her if they intentionally wanted to do something to differentiate her a bit further from Sophitia while including another important aspect to the history of Greek combat. But I don't know anything specific at all about them doing that.
On SCV, they were however toying around with the idea of giving Cassandra a longsword style that would have taken animations from and repurposed things from Darth Vader's moveset before she got scrapped.

I probably should not take a bite of this bait, but I will bite the bait for one quick moment.
Ivy has agency and is strong, proud of herself and never comes off feeling weak.
Voldo on the other hand doesn't even speak in anything other than grunts and his character is basically "insane sex slave with an unhealthy devotion to a guy he loves that he doesn't even realize is dead."

If you think of it.... if Voldo was female.... how offended would certain people be a scale from 1 to full blown moral panic tumblr rage? It makes you put things into perspective how Voldo is a character who is actually infinitely less offensive to people only because of his gender, whether people want to admit it or not.
Ivy's also had more character development at that too.

That’s a massive generalization, and not exactly a conducive attitude to growing the community, never say never...

I think you were missing my point a little, I’m not advocating for modest outfits, whatever is best for the series should be done. If Ivy staying the way she is is better great! I’m a fan of her outfit. I just was a little surprised by the hostility in this thread about this issue and always think a more open mind is a good thing. If the activists as you call them have aggressive closed minds on the issue and are intractable no reason we can’t be be better than them and consider things from both perspectives.

To Vergeben’s points I agree Ivy’s confidence makes her costume work, similar to Bayonetta. I don’t mind the way those two characters present their sexuality at all, but I don’t think you can compare Voldo. He definitely evokes fetishism and sex, but in a creepy way. As much as we love ivy and her confidence we can all admit she is partially there as eye candy to move copies. Voldo isn’t.

Anyway I have nothing else to say, but no point in getting mad about any of this. The game looks great! At this point I don’t care if ivy is naked or wearing sweatpants we have a new SC :)

Based on interviews, the timeline, and what's the roster currently looks like and what we know who is guaranteed to appear in Soul Calibur 6. I present, the final roster:

Returning Revealed:
Maxi
Xianghua
Kilik
Ivy
Yoshimitsu
Sophitia
Taki
Zasalamel
Nightmare
Siegfried
Mitsurugi

Newcomers:
Groh
Geralt

Unrevealed:
Talim
Astaroth
Rock
Hwang
Seong Mina
Voldo
Cervantes
Lizardman
Edgemaster
*New Character*

And that's it. Gotta remember, we have 13 characters already revealed. And 22-23 slots left. So that leaves only ten slots, two of which we know for sure are coming; Talim and one more new character. The rest of the cast is basically going to be from Soul Calibur 1, given the timeline and the fact that Soul Calibur 6 is a retelling of Soul Calibur 1. It stands to reason that they would bring in the roster of the first game back. Whether Seong Mina, Hwang, Rock, and Lizardman come back as clones or original characters remains to be seen. It's unlikely, given that SC4 gave Mina and Rock a mostly updated movelist and Lizardman could have his SC5 incarnation, but it's not confirmed.

Another point: SC1 had 20 characters. 3 of which are rather superflous (Arthur, Edgemaster, Inferno). Soul Calibur 6 has 23 on the base roster. 2 fan favorites (Talim and Zasalamel), 2 newcomers (Groh, plus one other), and one guest. That eats up 5 slots, leaving just 18 returning characters. That basically fits the entire Soul Calibur 1 roster.

So with the DLC, there's four more characters. Well... out of the newcomer cast from SC2 through SC4, there's Cassandra, Raphael, Yunsung, Tira, Setsuka, Hilde and Algol. If there's only four slots, three would be left behind. Of course, if there's another guest character making an appearance as an exclusive DLC character with the purchase of a certain edition of the game, they'd probably fit into one of the main roster slots above. I suspect then, we would see Edgemaster getting the axe in favor of this new DLC guest character.

isn't Ivy style and look based off of a dominatrix? thats what i always thought anyway and for me gave more to her character being someone who is dominant and should be feared without any or little thought of sexualizing her.

verg point is sound.

I tried to draw Inferno, focusing on his appearance from the Story trailer.

And, yeah, I'mma huge fan of this Burning Mokijin)))) I'm really wish he will got his own Fighting Style on the new SC. Mayby, He can be something like Necrid, take a different weapons on specific moves. Ow, BTW, it's going to be interesting when he can transform himself into SoulEdge during a battle and attacks by flying in this form.

P.S.: Sorry for my bad English... i'm not so experienced to typing on it...

I've always wanted Inferno to have slightly alternative animations of Nightmare's moves that convey chaos, perhaps even buff them slightly with more speed and range. Or we could say sod it, lets go full on SNK boss syndrome. :P

I wanted to ask what you guys think of a new gameplay aspect. I wasn't paying much attention to it before, but now I've looked at the gameplay again I've realized that the characters with explicit magical elements make much more use of it than in past games. For example, characters that didn't use magic during that actual fighting in the past do, and those who did use it even more prominently.

This includes:
  • Kilik entered a possessed state during his Soul Charge, which is different from the others. In the past, the Evil Seed was a lore element that had no impact on gameplay.
  • Zasalamel using dark sorcery to create vortexes and black holes, and control time.
  • Yoshimitsu (who had some magic before) has a magical trait of draining some health from his opponent by taking their life force after a combo, and his CE has him literally ripping out their soul and crushing it.
  • Nightmare summons a demonic horse during is CE, as opposed to just slashing them.
  • Taki had some magic moves, but it now it's use far more in tandem with her fighting with teleportation, bombs, and blasts showing up much more. Her CE has her using a demon seal to hold them in place.
  • Ivy also uses magic far more than just having a unique weapon. One of her moves involves her summoning a mystic bow and arrow to strike her airborne opponent, and another has her using magical discs.
  • Groh has various stages where magic becomes more prominent depending on how much he's using.
  • Geralt of course mixes swordsmanship with sorcery just as much as his home game.
Overall, I like it. Magic always existed but was treated as an afterthought in past games. I think characters who are supposed to be sorcerers or have inherent magical power should actually use them to fight. It also helps separate them from the ones who don't use magic at all, like Mitsurugi, Xianghua, Maxi and Siegfried.
