Short answer, of course it is. In matches where defense is well played any advantage works. Grabs work with the principle that if you guess wrong you can eat damage. With some characters a little, with some alot, and some times on can lead to the end of the round. You have the option of ducking/sometimes jumping, or countering. All goes with the ebb and flow of the match.
*Below is a personal commentary on the idea of broke and cheap. If you dont wanna read it skip back to the top of the thread or watch this *
airman: In a match nothing is considered cheap, this includes the tactics that we consider "broken" in the game. A little damage for AA and BB add up in a match and can be the difference in winning and cursing to yourself and going home. We may not want to win/or lose by the use of so called cheap tactics but that is the nature of the game that we play. Any means necessary in order to win no matter how fairly its stacked against the opponent in order to win. This brings about another query on the idea of cheap. When is one tactic considered cheap and the other isn't? I believe when it make one character have the overwhelming advantage against another but in competitive games like this it is about winning so in order to win alot of tactics have been made ranging from general pokes of AA,BB, low poke, and grabs to the whiff and dead Doom combo(and its variations), along with the Algol death combos and bubble traps and beyond(stuff we haven't learned yet). The time when we recognize something that gives a character the overwhelming advantage in all situations they are considered top tier and usually attract more players to them in order to win easier over the long run(X from all SC accept this one or Shiek anyone. Matter of fact it happens in all fighting games). What I'm trying to get at is that no tactic should be considered "dumb"; just a way to win. Though I personally don't approve folks running to top tier in order to win I can understand why folks would want to in order to prove that they can. It's just annoying playing against it. Even more so when the opponent does not have to deal with your characters metagame as much as you would, or have to put in the same amount of effort in order to win, but hey that is the purpose of fighting games. To win. Like I normally say if you dont like it you don't have to play it.
