Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

This is so true! Except for the Internet part. Broadband has many uses outside of gaming and social networks even, so I presume almost everyone is already paying for it on a regular basis.
The importance of each one of them will vary from person to person, area to area but you get the gist that there are four barriers to entry to get the full SC6 experience.

So will Raphael be vampire-like

I can see them put him human then he became Vampire when Soul Charge, tho i won't mind if he's 100% human.

Thing is i don't mind Vampire, and i like some Vampire character like Alucard (Okay i'm giving some SSSSS tier Vampire names here right i'll admit). But for Raphael i've never really felt him much as a Vampire, while as a Noble french Rapier guy he had something special, like Zorro without his black costume.

I think they should let Raph just human, and save the Vampire character idea for a potential future new character.

I think only crazy people are actually serious about boycotting it, but with that said, the success of SC6 depends a lot on casual gamers. I think it's safe to say that almost everyone posting in this thread is planning on buying the game (heck, I've already pre-ordered two copies and Namco hasn't even announced any of my mains). But the big question is how interested mainstream gamers are in SC6.

One thing which has changed a lot since SC5 was released is that streaming has exploded in popularity. I hope there will be some big streamers picking up SC6 as that should help to get more people to notice the game.

tbh, I don't think the boycotting is crazy. It's an issue of a greater scope than just SoulCalibur: This is the result of the poor decisions by game publishers, over the past decade. Well into the seventh gen consoles, publishers found ways to cut content and resell them as dlc. $60 titles were released incomplete and needed patches and paid dlc to complete the experience. I remember playing Assassin's Creed 2 when it came out in 2009. Memory Sequences 12 & 13 were visibly missing from the progress HUI. Ubisoft explained they were made dlc, because of time constraints and wanted to add them later. Fair enough, but then the question becomes, why charge for them? Why design the missing sequences as "corruptions" in the game itself? After all, some games have free dlc, so why not do it for AC2? The StarWars Battlefront 2 fiasco with lootboxes and microtransactions was the straw that broke the camel's back. Now the outcry is so strong, legislators are getting involved. Just recently, they removed lootboxes from OverWatch in Belgium.

Fighting games have been really pushing for dlc characters, with Capcom and Arc Systems Works facing the most criticism. It's really no surprise Namco Bandai would do the same thing with Tekken and SoulCalibur. This, even after Harada stated he would never release dlc characters, because "each character was like a chess piece," around the time of TTT2. I honestly expected Anna in the base roster of Tekken 7 and seeing her as dlc does feel "off" somehow. You have Nina at launch, but not Anna? Why not plan Anna at launch and make another character like Lucky Chloe as dlc? I don't have a problem with dlc characters per-say, but the cost to own all them can drain your wallet. You also HAVE to buy them, to get familiar with matchups. Fighting an online character you don't own, means you can't practice against them. That sucks.

In regard to SoulCalibur VI, I was already expecting some veterans to show up as dlc. The leakers already confirmed it. Having Tira as dlc, though, threw me off, because she was SoulCalibur V. I guess there was an assumption that the returning vets from SCV (minus Algol and maybe Hlide) would return on the base roster. This whole thing feels like a Catch 22: Buy the game and potentially encourage Namco and other publishers to lock important content behind a paywall or stick to principles and don't buy the game, potentially killing SoulCalibur. I believe Okubo when he said Tira was included in wake of fan demand and she is not on the disk. But it was a risky move to even exclude her from the base roster, when absent veterans was one of the things people hated about SoulCalibur V.

I think showing the gameplay of Tira gave boycottsers the impression she was complete and already on the disk. Namco probably should've revealed the rest of the base roster first, before showcasing dlc characters. It also doesn't help that right now, that SCVI is looking like SCV when it comes to the number of female characters. I don't personally obsess over it, but the game currently has 18 characters revealed on the base roster and only 6 are female (not including Cervantes, who wasn't introduced yet or Tira as dlc.) Lacking enough female characters and then requiring players to buy a popular one isn't a good idea.

I still want to buy the game. I've been waiting over six years for a new SoulCalibur. It's unfortunate that the game has fallen into this situation, despite all the positive things we've heard about it so far.

Trailer viewership, based on number of views on Namco-Bandai America's Youtube channel:

SC VI Announcement Trailer - 1 MILLION VIEWS - 8 months ago <--- doesn't it feel like it was years ago?
Kilik, Xianghua, Groh and Nightmare Trailer - 164K views - 7 months ago
Ivy Trailer - 271K views - 6 months ago <-- Boob boost?
Zasalamel Trailer - 99K views - 6 months ago
Geralt Trailer - 841K VIEWS - 5 months ago <--- This is why guest characters aren't going away.
Siegfried Trailer - 241K views - 4 months ago
Taki Trailer - 232K views - 3 months ago <-- Boob boost?
Yoshimitsu Trailer - 58K - 3 months ago <-- Probably artificially low since it went up early and got taken down.
Maxi Trailer - 125K views - 2 months ago
Story Trailer - 147K views - 2 months ago
Talim Trailer - 101K views - 1 month ago <-- But muh popularity!?
Voldo Trailer - 122K views - 1 month ago
Astaroth and Seung Mi-Na Trailer - 516K views - 3 weeks ago <-- EVO boost? Or boob boost?
Libra of Souls Trailer - 64K views - 1 week ago
Tira Trailer - 30K views - 1 week ago <-- Shockingly few views, considering boobs + controversy.
Azwel Trailer - 269K views - 2 days ago <-- This is baffling to me. Anyone have any theories as to why this trailer is so popular?

EDIT: Forgot about Yoshimitsu. Fixed.
I've noticed Namco has been a bit inconsistent with when they upload their trailers. It seems a bit random if their NA, EU, or JP channel uploads it first. Tira has 87k views on their EU channel. Tira was extra weird as Namco released assets of her to the press before they showed her on any of their own outlets.

I'm a casual and I bought every DLC in 4 and 5 and still play both to this day, both which I pre-ordered. I think you're confused as to what exactly a casual is, cause clearly I paid my dues. No tournament and minimal online play from me.

Hardcores and Casuals if both often buy everything the game has to offer. You think I'm going to give up on a CaS style or any extra CaS equipment? Hell no. I wonder how many hardcore tournament is all that matters people buy all the CaS DLC? I know I will pay for any character and CaS DLC available, period.

Oh and as for returning it after 6 days? Are you kidding me, I buy it cause I enjoy the creator and playing characters from my table top games with my friends verses each other. No one who buys it for the creator abandons it, or stops playing after six days, nor do they not buy DLC, extra styles and gear is AWESOME.

I don’t know if casual describe someone who likes the series this much.

I’m talking about the random people who aren’t “in the know” about Soul Calibur and buy it or let YouTubers like Angry Joe Or Doenward Thrust tell them Soul Calibur is evil because “muh Tira DLC”

Soulcalibur isn't even remotely a top seller on Steam. It's currently selling in the 160-170 range right behind Borderlands 2, which is a 6 year old game. That's actually really awful, cause it doesn't take much to get into steam's top 25.

It'll sell closer to release, but claiming it's a top seller right now is just bullshit.

Well, on my client it appears literally at the bottom of the first page.

It could stand to reason that the placement in the list has nothing to do with how well the game is doing, but I went to look, saw it near the top and thought I'd share.

So relax, boneman.

At no point during the Tira trailer did I think "This character is finished". I mean, idk why folks are mad that they showed dlc early. I personally like that they allowed people a glimpse as to what they were getting. You know, like how we knew we were getting 4 characters and made a good guess that they would be vets months ago.

People are mostly mad because they revealed a DLC character before the base game roster is fully revealed. On top of that, Tira will be available on day 1 which means she technically could have been part of the base roster which just exposes her as a huge cash grab for the Season Pass/Deluxe edition of the game which generally rubs people the wrong way.

This has been hashed to death already but...

Tira would have had to have been part of a free update, since she wasn't ready for disc production which happened weeks ago, and allegedly wasn't planned to be ready by then either. Additionally, it would be easier for them to delay the release of one character than the whole game. I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect the characters in a fighting game series to vary from year to year... but maybe that's because I've been playing fighting games since the 90s.

I wasn't opposing her being DLC. I've openly supported her being as such, I'm just explaining why people were mad.

This is what I suspected was causing the disconnect.

People on this site who associate as casuals basically infer that they're not interested in Soulcalibur competitively but are fully interested in single player modes, story, CaS etc.

Dissidia is using the term to denote people who aren't invested enough to join a dedicated forum.

That misunderstanding is the issue there. TBF though 'casual' round these parts has always meant "non-competitive player" so probably a different term would've helped.

I guess I'd fall under casual with this definition I've no real desire to play competitively anymore. I plan on playing the single player offerings and play some casual matches online with randoms and friends

i will tag you when the game comes out and she is burned on disk. you guys really believe they still work on the season pass chars including tira?
thats, very naive.

every recent fg did sell finished content on release...thats the norm these days and they just do what everyone else does to maximize the profit.
nothing to be ashamed of (anymore) or which needs to be sugar coated.

how else are the characters suppose to get done?

to counter this argument in talims reveal trailer at some point in it she says something but there was no audio. which leads to her not being finished completely and thats a character who is going to be on the base roster. so idk

Latest RE chart. Missed the bit about Lethal Hits on round 2, I guess I'll just write it in the infographic.

BTW, infographic 2.0 is almost done.

The reason why Tira is DLC is that the budget for the main game was already allocated when they decided to add her. We can assume each character and part of the game costs a specific amount of money, there are hundreds of people involved in making these models, animations, textures etc. that need to be paid. She was made using DLC budget, doesn't matter if she is on the disk or not, she is DLC because the funds for the main game were already used. It is also a safer option to have her as DLC than a newcomer that no one recognizes, or a less popular character, but that has been pointed out many times before.. just let them earn the money, so we can keep playing soulcalibur. There is no other game like this one and it's gonna die if people don't buy it. Angry youtube videos are making it worse, with followers of huge channels already declaring they will not buy it just over $5 of optional content.
