The plot thickens. They updated the article again!

It seems ludicrous because it's Soul Calibur, but what's the possibility of them re-releasing an expanded version of the game for next-gen consoles, DLC included?

you can generally see Tekken 7 be the trendsetter. I see Tekken where they experiment around, while SC polishes and refines on successful aspects of the game.

If it aint happening for Tekken it certainly won't be explored with SC.

does anybody have the ability to capture good quality screenshots of SC4 weapons in that game's creation menu?

I want to dig through the weapons that were offered to see what could possibly be recycled in future DLC. I just want to see the icons, because the wiki doesn't tell you what many SC4 weapons look like.

It's not impossible, but it's problematic for reasons that go beyond the franchise's low rank as a Namco priority: to the extent that backwards compatibility is a feature that the platforms are trying to push to meet consumer demand, it's probable that most people who want a Soulcalibur VI license have already purchased one, and thus will have access to the same core game and DLC on both generations of hardware operating on a particular network/distribution platform. These people are not going to want to buy a new version of the game after investing in several waves of DLC, and there would indeed probably be significant pushback if a new version was released with exclusive content that one couldn't also get by adding it to their original license as new DLC. This means there would be a very small market of pure newcomers to justify the investment of a new version--probably not even a small fraction of what would be a necessary market size to incentivize the development of such a product.

All of that said, there is really nothing to stop Namco from creating a minimally optimized version of the console ports of the game for the new hardware platforms, bringing the graphical fidelity of the PS5 and Series X/S up to parity with a high performing PC version, while simultaneously improving load times and general performance over the PS4 and XBOX One versions. Doing this would not involve a huge amount of development resources and would help buoy sales of further DLC/continuing support, so I'd say it is not outside the realm of possibility that Namco might do this with Tekken and, if it proves to be worth that modest investment, follow suit with SC.

Of course, the most likely outcome is still that there will be no updated product, but rather unified versions of the game running on both the new and old generations of hardware, with no graphical improvements and DLC sales ongoing on the distribution platform for use on either, followed within the next year by a wind-down of the content for the games as staff is redirecting to other projects, including the next Tekken title. It depends more than a little, of course, on how profitable these cotninuing support season passes prove to be and how much Namco has already invested in continuing them into an additional wave of DLC for one or both games. Needless to say, any new version approach to a game (even one based on minimal graphical upgrades that can be accomplished with limited developer manpower), is almost certain to be trialed on Tekken first.
